The easiest method is to set Windows to Extend, arrange the monitors correctly, and run the game in Borderless Windowed or Fullscreen Windowed mode. You can then move the pointer across the edge of the gaming monitor to use a browser, Discord, music player, or stream controls on the second display.
Exclusive fullscreen is the main complication: some games capture the cursor, minimize when they lose focus, pause automatically, or stop accepting keyboard input. Borderless mode usually avoids the worst of these problems, but behavior still depends on the game.
The easiest way to use a second monitor while gaming
- Set Windows to Extend your displays.
- Arrange the monitor icons in Windows so they match your physical setup.
- Open the game’s video or graphics settings.
- Change Display Mode to Borderless, Borderless Windowed, or Fullscreen Windowed.
- Move the pointer toward the edge of the gaming screen next to the second monitor.
- Click the application on the second monitor.
This normally lets the game remain visible while you access another display. However, clicking the second monitor gives that application keyboard and mouse focus. Keeping the game visible is not the same as keeping it active.

Set up the monitors in Windows 10 or 11
Windows’ standard multi-monitor controls work in both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select Display settings. You can also open Settings > System > Display.
- Click Identify to show which Windows display number belongs to each physical monitor.
- Drag the display rectangles until they match the monitors’ real positions.
- Under the multiple-display options, select Extend these displays.
- Click Apply.

For a quick change, press Windows + P and choose Extend. The other choices are PC screen only, Duplicate, and Second screen only.
Why monitor arrangement matters
The pointer can cross between displays only where the Windows display rectangles touch. If the second monitor is positioned too high, too low, or on the wrong side in Display settings, the cursor may appear stuck or cross at an unexpected point.

Different resolutions and scaling levels can also make the pointer seem to jump. Recheck the display arrangement, resolution, scale, and which monitor is set as the primary display before assuming the game or mouse is faulty.
Change the game to borderless fullscreen
Launch the game and look under Settings, Options, or Video/Graphics. Find Display Mode or Window Mode, then select the game’s equivalent of borderless fullscreen:
- Borderless
- Borderless Windowed
- Fullscreen Windowed
- Windowed Fullscreen
- Windowed Borderless
Set the resolution to match the gaming monitor where possible, apply the change, and move the mouse toward the edge nearest the second display.

Borderless mode fills the gaming monitor but behaves more like a normal desktop window. It generally makes switching to another screen easier and avoids the black-screen or resolution-switch delay associated with leaving exclusive fullscreen. It can still lose keyboard focus when you click another application, and performance or input latency may vary by game, Windows version, graphics card, and graphics API.

- Confirm that Windows is using Extend, not Duplicate or PC screen only.
- Switch from exclusive fullscreen to Borderless Windowed.
- Test ordinary Windowed mode. This helps identify whether the problem is specifically related to fullscreen handling.
- Press Alt + Tab once and select the application on the second monitor.
- Check the game’s controls for Lock Cursor, Confine Mouse, Mouse Capture, or Keep Cursor in Window. Turn off a capture or confinement option when you want to release the pointer.
- Close Xbox Game Bar and other overlays temporarily, then test again. Overlay-related cursor problems are game-dependent, so this is a troubleshooting check rather than a universal fix.
Some games release the pointer only while a menu, inventory, map, chat window, or overlay is open. Others capture it continuously. There is no universal guarantee that an exclusive-fullscreen game will allow interaction with another display.
If the game minimizes when you click the second monitor
This usually involves focus loss. When you click Discord, a browser, or another application, Windows gives that application focus. Depending on the game, it may continue rendering, pause, minimize, stop accepting keyboard input, or reduce its background activity.

Try these options:
- Use Borderless Windowed or ordinary Windowed mode.
- Look for a game setting such as Pause when unfocused, Pause on lost focus, or Background rendering.
- Use a controller for the game while the mouse is on the second monitor. This does not prevent every game from pausing when unfocused.
- Use keyboard media shortcuts or the game’s overlay instead of switching applications.
- Use Alt + Tab when the game does not support staying active in the background.
Borderless mode can keep the game visible, but it cannot force a game to keep processing input after another application becomes active.

If your real problem is the opposite—your pointer accidentally reaches the second monitor while you are playing—first check whether the game has a built-in cursor-lock or mouse-capture option.

DisplayFusion
DisplayFusion’s cursor functions can lock or unlock the pointer to the current focused window or current monitor. You can assign hotkeys, run the lock command before playing, and run it again to unlock the pointer. Its mouse-management settings also include controls related to Windows “sticky corners.”
DisplayFusion is also a broader multi-monitor manager with window-position profiles, monitor profiles, window movement functions, custom hotkeys, and multi-monitor taskbars. The vendor advertises a 30-day Pro trial followed by continued use of a free version. A Steam listing showed a $39.99 lifetime license and a $99.99 four-pack on August 16, 2026; prices, taxes, regions, and promotions can change. Check the official site or current Steam listing before purchasing.
Dual Monitor Tools
Dual Monitor Tools is a free, open-source option. Its Cursor module includes Lock cursor onto screen and configurable hotkeys. The interface and exact labels can vary by version, so download it from the established project source and configure the hotkey before launching a game.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Press Windows + P and confirm Extend.
- Make sure the monitor rectangles touch on the correct physical side.
- Use Borderless Windowed or Fullscreen Windowed mode.
- Check the game’s cursor-capture or cursor-lock setting.
- Test with Xbox Game Bar and other overlays closed.
- Recheck resolution and display scaling, especially with 4K and 1080p monitors.
- Use DisplayFusion or Dual Monitor Tools if you need a reliable lock/unlock hotkey.
- If the issue began after a graphics-driver change, consider updating or rolling back that driver.
- Try disabling fullscreen optimizations only as a late troubleshooting step; it is not a universal fix and can change game behavior.
- As a temporary fallback, press Windows + P > PC screen only if the second monitor makes the game unusable.
What to use in common situations

Does this work with three monitors?
Yes. Windows uses the same Settings > System > Display arrangement method for three or more screens. However, more displays create more edge paths and more opportunities for accidental pointer movement. A cursor-lock utility becomes more useful if you want the mouse confined to the gaming monitor.
Remote desktop sessions, virtual machines, and game streaming can behave differently because the client may control pointer capture. In those cases, check the remote or virtual-machine application’s mouse-integration settings as well as Windows and the game.
