South of Midnight launched on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 on March 31, 2026. The earlier announcement that it was “coming next spring” was accurate at the time, but that wording is now outdated. Compulsion Games’ Southern Gothic action-adventure originally debuted on Xbox Series X|S and PC on April 8, 2025.

The PS5 and Switch 2 versions are ports of the same game, not a sequel, remake or separate campaign. Official listings describe the Weaver’s Edition as including the full game and additional digital content; the PlayStation listing also identifies a digital artbook.

What the original announcement said
Compulsion Games announced in late 2025 that South of Midnight would come to PS5 and Switch 2 in spring 2026. That was a significant change for an Xbox Game Studios title that had initially launched on Xbox and PC.

The announcement did not give an exact date. The two new versions ultimately released on March 31, 2026. The original headline should therefore be read as a historical announcement rather than current release news. See the developer’s announcement and the original Xbox release details for the timeline.

What kind of game is South of Midnight?
South of Midnight is a third-person, single-player action-adventure set in a stylized Southern Gothic version of the American Deep South. You play as Hazel, a young woman drawn into a supernatural world after a hurricane. She becomes a Weaver, using magical abilities to repair damaged parts of the world and confront creatures shaped by folklore, memory and family history.
The game combines exploration, platforming, combat and story-driven creature encounters. Its folklore-inspired figures include Two-Toed Tom, Huggin’ Molly and the Rougarou. The setting and narrative are the main reasons to choose it over a more conventional action game: it is built around regional folklore and a highly distinctive visual identity rather than an open-world or live-service structure.

PS5 version: confirmed features
The official PlayStation Store listing identifies the PS5 version as:
- Offline playable and single-player.
- Compatible with DualSense wireless-controller vibration.
- PS5 Pro Enhanced.
- Eligible for PlayStation cloud streaming with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription where supported.
The US PlayStation listing showed the Weaver’s Edition at $39.99 during the research period. Store prices and promotions can change, so treat that as an observed official price rather than a permanent global price.
Cloud streaming has an important limitation: the PlayStation Store says the digital extras are not currently supported for streaming. In other words, streaming availability should not be treated as identical to downloading and playing the complete Weaver’s Edition locally.

The Nintendo release is specifically for Nintendo Switch 2. It is not a release for the original Nintendo Switch, so owners of the older console should not assume that their hardware is supported.
The main advantage of this version is portability. It gives Switch 2 owners access to the same core single-player adventure without buying into the Xbox or PlayStation ecosystem. Nintendo’s US listing showed the Weaver’s Edition at a regular price of $39.99 during the research period, although regional pricing and promotions may differ.
There is one ownership caveat worth knowing before purchase: Nintendo’s listing says South of Midnight does not support Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup. That may matter if you rely on cloud backups when moving between consoles or recovering save data.
The official Nintendo announcement confirms the Switch 2 release, while Nintendo’s product listing gives the save-data-backup qualification.

Official store pages establish the platform and edition, but they do not by themselves establish resolution, frame rate, loading times or battery performance. Those details should be judged from named, independent testing rather than assumed from the PS5 or Xbox versions.

Which version should you buy?
Choose PS5 if you want the strongest home-console presentation
- You prioritize visual fidelity and a television-based experience.
- You own a PS5 Pro and want the confirmed PS5 Pro Enhanced version.
- You value DualSense vibration support.
- You may use PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming, while accepting that the digital extras do not currently stream.
Choose Switch 2 if portability matters most
- You already own a Switch 2.
- You want to play the adventure away from a television.
- You would rather not buy into the Xbox or PlayStation ecosystem.
- You accept that Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud backup is unsupported.
Stay with Xbox or PC if you already own it
Xbox Series X|S and PC players who already bought South of Midnight generally have no new campaign to discover in the PS5 or Switch 2 versions. The original release arrived on Xbox Series X|S and PC on April 8, 2025, with Premium Edition early access beginning April 3. Xbox and PC players may also have access through Game Pass, depending on the current plan and region; no subscription price is stated here because availability and pricing can change.
The original Xbox release also supported Xbox Play Anywhere across Xbox, Windows PC and cloud services. That does not establish cross-buy, cross-save or entitlement transfers to PS5 or Switch 2.
Is it worth buying in 2026?
For PS5 and Switch 2 owners who missed the 2025 launch, the answer is primarily yes if the game’s focused, folklore-driven single-player design appeals to you. The Southern Gothic setting, supernatural creatures and unusual art direction give it a clear identity, and the $39.99 US listing observed for the Weaver’s Edition places it below the price of many major new releases.

Xbox and PC players should only repurchase if they specifically want the PS5 version’s features, Switch 2 portability or a separate platform copy. Switch 2 buyers should also make the unsupported Save Data Cloud backup part of their decision.
Readers attracted to the concept may also consider Kena: Bridge of Spirits for third-person exploration and combat, Hellblade II for a darker cinematic experience, Psychonauts 2 for surreal platforming and storytelling, Control for supernatural action, or Ori and the Will of the Wisps for folklore-inflected atmosphere and platforming. These are thematic comparisons, not claims that every game is available on every platform.
Bottom line
South of Midnight is no longer merely “coming next spring.” It launched on PS5 and Nintendo Switch 2 on March 31, 2026, following its April 2025 Xbox and PC debut. Buy the PS5 version for the confirmed PS5 Pro and DualSense features; choose Switch 2 for portability; and if you already own the Xbox or PC version, do not expect the ports to add a new story campaign.
