Lenovo teased the 2024 Legion Y700 in a first-party promotional video on September 27, 2024, showing an 8.8-inch gaming tablet in a matte-black finish ahead of its planned September 29 unveiling. The video confirmed the compact design and gaming focus, but it was promotional material—not an independent hands-on review.
The 2024 model was built around a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, a 165Hz 2560×1600 display and a redesigned internal layout intended to keep the areas held during landscape gaming cooler. Lenovo’s compact Y700 concept has since evolved into the globally branded Legion Tab Gen 5, which is now available in some markets.
What Lenovo showed in the 2024 teaser
The tablet appeared in a Lenovo promotional video distributed through Chinese social-media channels. It was shown being used in landscape orientation for gaming and for general media consumption, with a matte-black exterior and the compact proportions that had become central to the Y700 line.

It demonstrated the hardware’s appearance and intended use, but did not establish real-world battery life, sustained frame rates, long-term temperatures or overall ergonomics.

At the time, Lenovo was expected to formally unveil the device on September 29, 2024. The original report also noted that global availability had not yet been confirmed. Notebookcheck’s contemporary report covered the teaser and its pre-launch details.
Reported specifications for the 2024 Legion Y700
The 2024 Y700 was reported with the following hardware:
- Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
- Display: 8.8-inch IPS panel
- Resolution: 2560×1600
- Refresh rate: up to 165Hz
- Colour: DCI-P3 coverage
- Brightness: up to 500 nits
- Memory: configurations reportedly reaching 12GB of RAM
Lenovo also promoted a redesigned internal arrangement that placed the system-on-chip toward the upper-middle section of the tablet. The company claimed this could reduce temperatures in the areas where a player’s hands rest during landscape gaming by up to 4.3°C.
That figure was a Lenovo claim, not an independently verified measurement. It should be understood as a design target or laboratory result under Lenovo’s stated conditions, not a guarantee that every game or use pattern would produce the same reduction.

Why the 8.8-inch format matters
The Y700’s most important feature was not simply its processor or display refresh rate. It was the decision to keep the tablet at 8.8 inches while most Android tablets occupy the 10-to-13-inch range.
That smaller chassis is easier to grip in landscape orientation, particularly when a player uses touch controls for long sessions. It also weighs and occupies less space than a conventional large tablet, making it more practical for travel. The screen is still considerably larger than a phone, while the narrow form factor avoids some of the hand fatigue associated with holding a full-size tablet.
There are clear compromises. An 8.8-inch screen offers less room for split-screen work, comics, desktop-style applications and movie viewing than a larger tablet. It is portable, but calling it “pocket-sized” would be misleading for most people. The format is best understood as a gaming-focused middle ground between a phone and a large tablet.

Lenovo continued developing the compact 8.8-inch gaming-tablet concept. In February 2026, the company teased a fifth-generation Y700 through another promotional video and Chinese social-media posts. That later teaser highlighted portability, dual USB-C ports, bypass charging and a 50MP rear camera. Early coverage referred to it as the Legion Y700 Gen 5 or an AI-focused Legion tablet. Notebookcheck’s 2026 teaser report documented that stage of the product’s development.

For international markets, Lenovo’s fifth-generation device became the Legion Tab Gen 5, also listed as the Legion Tab (8.8″, 5). The Y700 name remains common for Chinese-market products and import listings, but buyers should not assume that every Y700 and Legion Tab version has identical firmware, Google-service support, wireless bands, accessories or warranty coverage.

These are Gen 5 specifications and should not be mixed with the 2024 Y700’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform, 2560×1600 display or reported 4.3°C thermal claim. See Lenovo’s official product page and its official datasheet for the published specifications.

What bypass charging does
Bypass charging is a power-management feature designed for extended plugged-in gaming. Instead of routinely charging the battery while the tablet is operating, power can be directed toward the device while reducing or avoiding normal battery charging.

The aim is to reduce heat and battery stress during long sessions. It does not mean the tablet produces no heat, nor does it guarantee zero battery wear. Lenovo’s teaser confirmed the feature, but did not provide a universal settings path or fully describe how it behaves across regional firmware versions.
Gen 5 compared with the previous global Legion Tab
The previous global model, the Legion Tab Gen 3, used a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, Android 14, an 8.8-inch 2560×1600 165Hz display, a 6,550mAh battery and a 350g chassis. The Gen 5 keeps the same basic compact-tablet idea while raising the processor tier, display resolution, battery capacity, camera resolution and memory/storage ceiling.
The older tablet may therefore be the better value when heavily discounted. The Gen 5 is the more capable choice for buyers who specifically want Android 16, the larger 9,000mAh battery, a 3K panel, newer silicon and up to 16GB of RAM with 512GB of storage. - Mobile gamers: The 8.8-inch size, high refresh rate and fast touch response are suited to touch-heavy and competitive games.
- Frequent travellers: The 360g Gen 5 is easier to carry than most large gaming tablets.
- Players with large libraries: microSD expansion up to 2TB can be useful, subject to card compatibility and real-world performance.
- Accessory users: Two USB-C ports can simplify charging, display output and peripherals, although the ports have different capabilities.
It is a weaker fit for buyers who want an OLED screen, a laptop replacement, a keyboard-first productivity device or the lowest-cost Android gaming hardware. A 165Hz panel also does not guarantee 165 frames per second: the game, graphics settings and software support remain limiting factors.

Important buying caveats
The two USB-C ports are not equivalent. Lenovo identifies one as USB 3.2 Gen 2 and the other as USB 2.0. The datasheet also states that the ports cannot charge simultaneously and that some functions may not work at the same time.
RAM is soldered and cannot be upgraded. The Legion Tab Gen 5’s LCD is not an OLED alternative, despite its high refresh rate and colour coverage. Folio cases, screen protectors and chargers may be included only in selected countries, and accessory availability varies by region.
Import shoppers should distinguish between a Chinese Legion Y700 and an officially sold global Legion Tab. Before buying, check the exact model number, operating-system language options, Google services, wireless-band support, charger, included accessories, return policy and warranty. A Chinese-market Y700 does not automatically provide the same software experience or Lenovo support as a US or European Legion Tab.
Availability and price context
The 2024 article concerned a teaser before launch, not a tablet that was already broadly available. The fifth-generation successor later received estimated EMEA availability from April 2026, with an estimated starting price of €999. Lenovo’s US shopping page displayed a $699.99 promotional price against an estimated value of $849.99 when crawled; that was a dated promotion, not a permanent US price or universal MSRP. Check the official regional store before treating either figure as current.
For US buyers, the official Legion Tab Gen 5 buying page is the appropriate reference. Accessories and support plans, including Premium Care where offered, should also be checked by country rather than assumed from another Y700 generation.
Verdict
The 2024 teaser mattered because it showed Lenovo doubling down on a rare format: a genuinely compact Android gaming tablet that is easier to hold than a large slate without shrinking to phone size. Its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 165Hz display and Lenovo’s claimed hand-contact thermal improvement made it an intriguing product, but the promotional video did not prove real-world performance.
That idea now lives on in the 2026 Legion Tab Gen 5. The newer model is a substantial hardware upgrade, but its appeal still depends on the same 8.8-inch compromise. It is compelling for buyers who value portability, high-end Android performance and landscape gaming above screen size and OLED image quality. Everyone else should compare the regional price, firmware, warranty and the discounted Gen 3 before paying the Gen 5 premium.
