Microsoft Gaming Services is normally installed through Microsoft Store. It is a Windows component used by some Xbox and Microsoft Store games for installation, licensing, updates, and launching. It is separate from the Xbox app and does not require a PC Game Pass subscription.
Start with the normal Store installation. Use the PowerShell method only when Gaming Services is missing, corrupted, or repeatedly fails to install.
Before you begin
- Install pending updates from Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account used for your Xbox games.
- Make sure you have an active internet connection.
- Close the Xbox app and Microsoft Store before reinstalling Gaming Services.
- Use an administrator account if you need the PowerShell method.
- Restart Windows if an update or installer has requested it.
Windows 11 Home and Pro generally follow the steps below. Store labels and availability can vary by Windows release, language, region, and organizational policy.

Microsoft recommends updating Windows and Store apps before attempting more invasive repairs.

- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart if prompted.
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library > Get updates.
- Allow Xbox, Microsoft Store, and related components to update.

2. Install Gaming Services from Microsoft Store
This is the safest method for most users.
- Open Start, type Microsoft Store, and open it.
- Search for Gaming Services.
- Select the Microsoft Gaming Services listing.
- Select Get, Install, or Update, depending on what the Store displays.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt if one appears.
- Wait for installation to finish, then restart Windows.
- Open Xbox or retry the affected Microsoft Store game.
If search does not find the listing, open the Run dialog with Windows + R and enter:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHNThis opens the Gaming Services Store page using the product identifier cited in Microsoft community guidance. Treat the Store page and its current availability—not the identifier alone—as authoritative.
How to tell whether it worked
- The Store button changes to Installed, Open, or Update.
- Gaming Services appears under Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- The Xbox app no longer says that Gaming Services is missing.
- The affected game begins installing or launching after you restart or reopen Xbox.
3. Repair or reset Gaming Services
Use this path when Gaming Services is listed but does not work correctly.

- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Gaming Services.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test Xbox or the affected game.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset.
Repair attempts to fix the installation without the broader data reset. Reset can clear an app’s local data or settings, so do not assume every configuration will be preserved.
Not every Windows app exposes both controls. Microsoft documents this navigation in its guide to repairing and resetting apps in Windows.
4. Repair Xbox and Microsoft Store
Gaming Services, Xbox, and Microsoft Store are separate components. Fixing one does not necessarily repair the others.

Repair Xbox
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox, open its three-dot menu, and select Advanced options.
- Select Repair, restart or reopen Xbox, and test it.
- If necessary, return and select Reset.
Repair Microsoft Store
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Store and open Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If the Store still fails, select Reset and try the Gaming Services listing again.
5. Reset the Microsoft Store cache
If the Store opens but the Install button does nothing, reset its cache:

- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait for the command window to close and Microsoft Store to reopen.
- Try the Gaming Services listing again.
wsreset.exe is a practical Store-cache troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed Gaming Services fix. If other Store apps also fail, the underlying problem is probably broader than Gaming Services.
6. Reinstall Gaming Services with PowerShell
Use this advanced method when Gaming Services is absent, corrupted, or repeatedly requested by Xbox despite appearing installed. The commands below are widely cited in Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting guidance, but they are not a universal guarantee.
Remove and reinstall the package
- Save your work and close Xbox and Microsoft Store.
- Open Start and search for PowerShell.
- Right-click PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command exactly:
Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.GamingServices | Remove-AppxPackage -AllUsersAfter it completes, run:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN- When Microsoft Store opens, select Install or Get.
- Approve UAC if prompted.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Xbox and test the affected game.
The first command removes the existing Gaming Services AppX package for all users where it is present. It does not install a replacement; the second command opens Microsoft Store so you can install Gaming Services again.
What PowerShell errors mean
- No package found: Gaming Services may already be absent. Try the Store link anyway.
- Access denied: PowerShell may not have been opened as administrator, or policy restrictions may apply.
- Deployment or AppX error: Microsoft Store, Windows components, permissions, or system files may be damaged.
- Store does not open: Repair the Store or run
wsreset.exebefore repeating the removal command.
Do not remove unrelated AppX packages, manually delete Gaming Services registry keys, or download replacement packages from unofficial websites.

7. Use Microsoft’s Gaming Services Repair Tool
If Store installation and the built-in Repair/Reset options fail, try the official Gaming Services Repair Tool for PC from Xbox Support. Follow the current instructions on that page, since the tool’s download and interface can change.
Use only the Microsoft/Xbox support page. The tool is a troubleshooting utility, not a third-party driver or registry cleaner, and it is not guaranteed to resolve every installation problem.

If the new profile works, the original profile, Store identity, or per-user app registration may be the cause.

Before contacting Microsoft, record your Windows edition and build, Xbox and Gaming Services versions, exact error code, whether other Store apps install, and whether the Gaming Services Repair Tool changed the behavior.
Is Gaming Services free?
Yes. Installing Gaming Services itself does not require buying PC Game Pass. Game access is separate: a particular title may be free, purchased through Microsoft Store, or available through a subscription such as PC Game Pass. Buying a subscription will not repair a broken Gaming Services installation.
When to contact Microsoft
Escalate when Microsoft Store cannot install any apps, the Store is disabled by an employer or school, Gaming Services repeatedly disappears, or AppX deployment errors continue after the steps above. Avoid registry deletion and unofficial AppX downloads unless current Microsoft support specifically directs you and provides a safe recovery plan.
