Peter Khouly’s Pico Pal combines a Game Boy Color-inspired handheld with Raspberry Pi’s RP2350B microcontroller, an ESP32 wireless coprocessor, and a broad set of maker-oriented hardware. It is designed for Game Boy-family gaming, but also for portable embedded development, audio, sensors, and wireless experiments. As of August 18, 2026, it remains a Crowd Supply pre-launch project—not a product with a confirmed price or shipping date.
A familiar handheld shape with a very different purpose
Pico Pal has a transparent enclosure and a late-1990s Game Boy Color-style layout: a directional pad, two fire buttons, and Start and Select controls. Its advertised 2.6-inch IPS display is a 320 × 320-pixel square panel. That shape suits original Game Boy-style content, though games with different native aspect ratios may need scaling or borders. It is Game Boy-inspired, not an official Nintendo product.
The project’s central idea is to put a usable embedded development platform inside a portable gaming device. That makes Pico Pal a different proposition from a typical retro handheld: the gaming controls and screen are part of the hardware, but so are wireless connectivity, sensors, storage, audio, and interfaces for experimentation.
What the RP2350B does—and does not do
The main processor is Raspberry Pi’s RP2350B, a microcontroller rather than a Linux-capable Raspberry Pi computer. It is not equivalent to a Raspberry Pi 4, 5, or Zero, and Pico Pal should not be understood as a pocket Linux PC.

The RP2350 family provides two Cortex-M33 cores or two Hazard3 RISC-V cores, operating at up to 150 MHz. These are alternative processor configurations, not four cores running simultaneously. Raspberry Pi specifies 520 KB of on-chip SRAM for the chip, while the RP2350B package exposes 48 GPIO pins. Its embedded features include programmable I/O, multiple serial interfaces, PWM channels, analogue inputs, and USB host/device capability. Together, those make it useful for responsive embedded tasks and custom peripherals—not a conventional desktop workload. Raspberry Pi’s RP2350 datasheet provides the chip-level specifications.
One important detail for developers: the RP2350B has no built-in flash. Pico Pal lists 16 MB of external flash for the RP2350 system, alongside 4 MB of flash for the ESP32. The project also lists a bundled 16 GB microSD card for removable storage. External flash and microSD serve different roles; neither changes the RP2350B’s on-chip SRAM capacity.
The ESP32 handles wireless work
An Espressif ESP32 acts as a secondary controller, adding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to a design whose primary platform is the RP2350B. That division matters: wireless support does not mean the ESP32 is the main emulation processor. The project also points to possible Bluetooth-controller and audio uses, but the maturity and exact scope of those functions depend on firmware and the final hardware.

More than a game screen
The advertised hardware includes a 1,500 mAh rechargeable lithium-polymer battery, USB-C for charging and programming, stereo speakers, a headphone output, an infrared transceiver, a real-time clock, and an LSM6DSO32 inertial measurement unit. The IMU can support motion-aware projects; the clock can underpin time-based functions such as alarms. The board is also intended to support SPI and I²C peripherals, making it a portable platform for sensors and other embedded experiments.
Pico Pal is designed for external video output, but descriptions refer to USB-C and/or a dock arrangement, with HDMI-compatible DVI output. Do not assume the handheld itself has a standard HDMI socket: the connector and dock details depend on the eventual configuration. The design log records hardware iterations involving video, battery charging, GPIO allocation, audio, and other components, so prototype details may not exactly match a production revision.
The battery capacity is specified, but reliable runtime is not. A five-hour figure has appeared as an estimate in secondary coverage; no independent runtime measurement or final production result is established by the available project material. Actual battery life would depend on screen brightness, audio, wireless use, firmware, and other settings.

Game Boy emulation is the clearest gaming target
The project targets Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulation. In a June 2, 2026 Crowd Supply update, Khouly said early issues shown in a video had been fixed and that tested games were running at full speed. That is a developer report, not an independent compatibility benchmark, and it does not establish that every title will work perfectly on final hardware.

The distinction is important for buyers: a game shown in a demonstration is not necessarily proof of broad compatibility, and reported prototype performance is not a guarantee for final firmware. Emulator core, display and audio drivers, storage, game-specific behavior, and later hardware revisions can all affect the experience. The available material supports Game Boy-family targets; it does not justify assuming support for Game Boy Advance, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, or a broad catalogue of other systems.
Cartridge dumping was still part of the development story in the June update: Khouly said the campaign launch was delayed while working on that support. Treat it as a developing feature unless the eventual campaign specifications confirm it as implemented and included.

Firmware features and maker potential
In the same update, Khouly described stable firmware for Game Boy Color emulation, MP3, FLAC, and WAV playback, IMU-based G-meter functionality, sunrise-alarm features, and sleep sounds. Save states, settings and in-game menus, cartridge dumping, and additional utilities were among the features still being developed or planned. These are firmware claims and targets, not evidence of a finalized consumer operating system or polished interface.
For makers, the attraction is the combination: a screen and controls are already integrated with a substantial microcontroller, wireless coprocessor, storage, audio, sensors, and external interfaces. Potential projects include portable RP2350 prototypes, custom embedded games and interfaces, infrared control, sensor experiments, audio applications, and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth development. The project presents schematics, a bill of materials, firmware source, and development documentation as part of its open-hardware approach. Check the project’s published files for the applicable license rather than assuming a particular open-source license.

The project page also mentions security-testing ideas such as USB HID input injection, Bluetooth spoofing, and Wi-Fi deauthentication. Those are not proof that Pico Pal is a turnkey professional penetration-testing tool. Such activity can disrupt systems or violate law, network rules, or consent requirements. Any security experimentation belongs in an authorized, isolated lab; this article does not provide attack instructions.
What prospective backers should weigh
- Status: Crowd Supply still listed Pico Pal as “launching soon” on August 18, 2026. No confirmed campaign price, retail price, shipping date, or fulfillment schedule was established.
- Final specifications: Hardware and firmware have evolved during development. Video output, docking, cartridge dumping, wireless functions, accessories, and other details may change before production.
- Gaming expectations: Game Boy and Game Boy Color are the documented focus. Do not buy on the assumption of broad multi-system emulation or universal compatibility.
- Battery life: The listed 1,500 mAh capacity is not a runtime guarantee.
- Project risk: A pre-launch crowdfunding project is not the same as a finished retail device. Price, delivery, production quality, support, and warranty terms remain questions until the campaign provides them.
- Games: Users should obtain game files lawfully; the hardware announcement is not permission to copy or download copyrighted games.
For context, Raspberry Pi’s Pico 2 is a much simpler RP2350 development board, announced at $5 at launch. It is a lower-cost way to experiment with the chip, not a substitute for Pico Pal’s integrated screen, controls, battery, wireless coprocessor, audio, and sensors. That launch price is not a current Pico Pal price comparison.
Pico Pal’s Crowd Supply page is the place to check for campaign updates and eventual terms. Until it publishes a price and fulfillment details, readers can follow the project but cannot make a normal purchase decision.
