GeForce NOW is available as a beta app for supported Linux PCs and as an app for selected Amazon Fire TV Sticks. NVIDIA announced the expansion on January 5, 2026; the Linux beta launched January 29. Linux users need Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or later, while Fire TV streaming is limited to up to 1080p at 60 fps in standard dynamic range. “RTX 5080-class” describes NVIDIA’s remote cloud servers—not hardware inside your PC or TV stick.
What NVIDIA brought to GeForce NOW
The CES announcement combined two new ways to access the service with broader updates to its cloud gaming platform. NVIDIA announced a native Linux PC app and a Fire TV app, alongside RTX 5080-powered cloud servers for Ultimate members. NVIDIA also promoted streaming ceilings of up to 5K at 120 fps or 1080p at 360 fps on suitable configurations, plus RTX features, DLSS 4 and NVIDIA Reflex. Those are service-wide ceilings, not promises for every device, game or membership. NVIDIA’s CES announcement also covered flight-control support and account sign-in integrations.
The distinction between endpoints matters: Linux is the more capable PC experience, but its native app remains in beta; Fire TV is a convenient, controller-focused way to play on a television, with a much lower video ceiling.

What “RTX 5080-class” means
GeForce NOW runs a game on a remote NVIDIA server, then streams the resulting video to your device. Your Linux PC or Fire TV Stick decodes and displays that stream; it does not need a local RTX 5080. This can make demanding games accessible on older or lower-powered hardware, but it does not remove the need for a capable decoder, a suitable display, a stable low-latency connection or a supported game.

Cloud rendering is also not the same as owning a gaming PC. Your controls travel to the server, the game renders there, and the video must travel back. Network delay remains part of the experience. RTX, DLSS, resolution, frame rate and HDR availability depend on the membership, game and endpoint. NVIDIA markets RTX 50-Series performance and DLSS 4 as Ultimate features; check the current membership details rather than assuming every tier includes them.
Linux: supported baseline and requirements
NVIDIA labels its Linux app a beta and lists Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as the supported baseline, with later releases identified in its launch coverage. That does not mean every distribution based on Ubuntu—or Linux distributions such as Fedora, Arch, Debian, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS or Bazzite—is officially supported. On an unlisted distribution, the browser experience may be an option, but native-app compatibility is not guaranteed.

Install and troubleshoot without guessing at commands
- Confirm you are on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or a later release NVIDIA lists as supported, and check that your GPU supports the required Vulkan video decoding.
- Update your graphics driver, then get the Linux beta through NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW download and support hub. Use NVIDIA’s current installation instructions rather than an old package command.
- Install the app, sign in, and connect the relevant supported game-store account. Choose a game that appears in NVIDIA’s live catalog and test your intended stream settings.
- If the app stops launching after an NVIDIA host-driver update, reinstall the GeForce NOW app; NVIDIA specifically calls out this recovery step for Linux. If it still fails, check the X11/Wayland guidance for your GPU.
- If a game is missing, first check whether it is currently supported and available through your linked account. A catalog or publisher restriction is different from an app-install problem.
NVIDIA lists these minimum connection speeds for Linux modes: 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 fps; 25 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; 35 Mbps for QHD or ultrawide QHD at 120 fps; 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 fps; 55 Mbps for 1080p or QHD at 240/360 fps; and 65 Mbps for 5K at 120 fps. NVIDIA also specifies latency below 80 ms to a data center and recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Meeting a bandwidth figure alone does not guarantee a smooth stream.
Fire TV: check the exact Stick model
“Fire TV support” does not mean every Fire TV television or streaming device is compatible. NVIDIA’s current requirements page lists these Fire TV Stick combinations:

The initial Fire TV launch announcement named a narrower set of models than NVIDIA’s later live requirements page. For current eligibility, use the requirements page and verify the device’s model and Fire OS version under Settings → My Fire TV → About.

The Fire TV app is limited to H.264 video, stereo audio and standard dynamic range, at up to 1080p/60. It is not the endpoint for the service’s 5K/120 or 1080p/360 claims. Gameplay requires a supported gamepad; NVIDIA describes keyboard and mouse as navigation inputs, not normal gameplay controls. Xbox and PlayStation controllers and the Amazon Luna controller are among the supported options listed by NVIDIA, though controller compatibility can vary. A gamepad that works in Fire TV menus is not automatically guaranteed to work in every game.
Membership, game access and ownership
Do not treat “RTX 5080-class” as a feature included with any GeForce NOW account. NVIDIA’s Linux requirements page says Premium is required for features including 5K, 4K and ultrawide resolutions, RTX, and 120, 240 and 360 fps streaming. Separately, NVIDIA’s membership page positions RTX 50-Series performance and DLSS 4 as Ultimate features. These labels and entitlements are not interchangeable: review the live plan details for the specific feature and region you want. Pricing can vary and should be checked at signup; older reported prices are not a reliable current quote.
A membership also does not automatically grant a license to every game. GeForce NOW streams supported games associated with compatible store accounts; you may need to own a title through a supported storefront and link that account. The current game catalog and publisher or account restrictions can change, so search NVIDIA’s live library before subscribing. Local Linux compatibility is not proof that a game can be streamed through GeForce NOW.

What affects performance in practice
Bandwidth, latency, jitter, packet loss and local decoding are different constraints. Bandwidth determines whether enough data can arrive; latency affects how quickly an input reaches the server and its response returns. Jitter is variation in that delay, while packet loss can produce stutter or visual artifacts. A fast connection can still feel sluggish if its route to NVIDIA’s data center is congested or distant, and an endpoint that cannot decode smoothly can struggle even on a good network.
Try Ethernet where practical, or use a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection. Test near the device you plan to play on, close competing traffic, and lower resolution or frame rate if the stream stutters. Check latency to NVIDIA’s data center before blaming the app. A 5K or high-frame-rate stream may use substantial data; NVIDIA’s Mbps minimums are connection requirements, not estimates of monthly data use. If your ISP has a cap, monitor actual usage before making high-resolution streaming routine.

Finally, “up to” is important. A high-refresh monitor or 4K display, an eligible membership, a supported game and suitable network are all needed to approach a headline ceiling. Fire TV’s 1080p/60 SDR limit remains the practical cap even if the television itself supports 4K or HDR.
Who is it for?
- Linux laptop or older desktop owners: A strong option if you use a supported Ubuntu release, have adequate video decoding and want newer games without buying a high-end GPU. The beta status and network dependence are meaningful trade-offs.
- Steam Deck owners: Potentially useful for streaming when local performance or battery life is a concern, but do not assume the native Linux app is officially supported on SteamOS; the listed baseline is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Check NVIDIA’s current device guidance.
- Fire TV couch gamers: A convenient way to play supported PC games on a TV if 1080p/60 SDR and gamepad controls are enough. It is not a substitute for a 4K/HDR/120-fps endpoint.
- Flight-simulation players: NVIDIA says it added support for popular flight sticks and throttle systems from brands including Thrustmaster and Logitech, with titles such as Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Elite Dangerous and War Thunder highlighted. That does not guarantee every HOTAS, yoke, pedal or custom setup works on every device; a complex setup is a poorer match for Fire TV than a PC.
- Competitive players: Reflex and high frame rates may help on compatible configurations, but cloud round-trip delay remains. Players who prioritize the lowest possible input latency may prefer local hardware.
GeForce NOW is a weaker fit if you need offline play, mods or direct access to game files, unsupported launchers, or dependable support for a non-Ubuntu Linux distribution. It is also less attractive on a high-latency connection or where data caps are restrictive.
How it compares with other ways to play

For people who already own a capable gaming desktop, local streaming can avoid a cloud subscription and may work well on a home network. For people without gaming hardware, GeForce NOW’s central trade is paying for access and relying on a good connection instead of buying and maintaining a powerful PC.
