microByte is a real, open-hardware ESP32 handheld—not just a concept. It combines a 1.3-inch color display, physical controls, microSD storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a rechargeable battery in a 78 × 40 × 17 mm enclosure. Its published emulator targets include NES, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Gear, and Sega Master System. The important catch is availability: the original Crowd Supply campaign ended in 2021, and its listing now says Not Available. Building one today means reproducing the released design, or modifying an existing unit, rather than ordering a current DIY kit.

What microByte actually is

microByte is three things at once: a tiny retro-gaming console, an open-hardware electronics project, and a programmable ESP32 development platform. Byte-Mix Lab launched it through Crowd Supply in 2021. The campaign raised $9,840 against a $3,750 goal (262 percent), but that historical success does not mean new units remain in production.

The gaming software is only part of the idea. The ESP32 platform and wireless connectivity make microByte suitable for custom games, sensor dashboards, home-automation interfaces, robot controllers, and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth experiments. The project also describes loading external applications from a microSD card without replacing the primary firmware.

Headline specifications

Component Published specification
Dimensions 78 × 40 × 17 mm (7.8 × 4 × 1.7 cm)
Processor ESP32-WROVER-E
Memory 8 MB RAM, 16 MB flash
Display 1.3-inch ST7789 IPS, 240 × 240 pixels
Battery 500 mAh Li-Po, with charging and over-discharge protection
Audio I²S digital amplifier and speaker
Storage microSD card slot
Connectivity USB-C, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth
Controls D-pad, start/select/menu functions, and multiple action buttons

The enclosure is genuinely pocket-sized, but that size imposes compromises. A 1.3-inch screen is readable for short sessions rather than expansive modern-game interfaces, and the small controls may become uncomfortable for larger hands. The 500 mAh battery is modest. The project quoted roughly six to seven hours as an upper-end battery estimate; actual runtime depends on brightness, audio volume, wireless use, emulator, battery age, and firmware.

What systems can it emulate?

The project publishes emulator targets for:

  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
  • Game Boy
  • Game Boy Color
  • Game Gear
  • Sega Master System

These are target platforms, not a guarantee that every game runs correctly. The project documentation warns that some titles can glitch or fail to start. microByte should therefore not be described as a universal emulator, a broad 16-bit handheld, or a device that plays an entire commercial library.

As with any emulator, technical capability and legal rights are separate. Use homebrew, public-domain software, or game dumps you are legally entitled to use; the console does not grant permission to download or distribute copyrighted ROMs.

Why the open-source claim matters

microByte goes beyond allowing software sideloading. The project presents firmware, PCB design files and schematics, enclosure STL files, button-cap files, documentation, and an external-application library as available resources. The project repositories include the main project, PCB, case, firmware, and external apps.

“Open source” or “open hardware” does not mean “easy to make at home.” A released PCB still has to be fabricated and populated. You need compatible components, an enclosure, assembly and inspection tools, and a software environment that may be older than today’s ESP32 toolchains. Repositories, dependencies, and manufacturing files should be checked at the exact revision you intend to use.

Licensing also needs care. The emulator stack includes modified or adapted code associated with projects such as GNUBoy, Nofredo, SMS Plus, and Espressif adaptations. Review the individual licenses and attribution requirements before distributing a commercial derivative; do not assume every file shares one unrestricted license.

Three realistic ways to use microByte

1. Find an original assembled unit

The campaign offered a $45 Eco Edition and a $60 Premium Bundle. The latter included a USB-C cable, an 8 GB microSD card, and an additional enclosure; historical U.S. shipping was listed at $8. Those are campaign-era prices, not current retail prices. The Crowd Supply listing now marks the product Not Available, so a finished unit would most likely be second-hand.

2. Reproduce the hardware

This is the literal build-yourself route. Expect to fabricate or order the PCB; source the ESP32-WROVER-E, display, battery, charging and protection parts, USB-C hardware, microSD socket, speaker, amplifier components, buttons, and passives; assemble and inspect the board; produce the enclosure; flash firmware; and test every subsystem.

For one unit, compare bare-board fabrication, assembly-service fees, minimum order quantities, component shortages, shipping, and rework equipment. Professional assembly may be more practical than hand-soldering a dense board, but that is a builder’s cost-and-skill decision, not a documented project requirement.

3. Modify an existing unit or the software

Owners and second-hand buyers can avoid reproducing the electronics. Firmware changes, custom applications, replacement enclosures, button-cap experiments, and ESP32 projects let you use the open design without manufacturing a complete console.

What building one involves

  1. Audit the files. Obtain the main repository, PCB and schematic files, firmware, enclosure, external apps, build instructions, submodules, and license files. Confirm the board revision and that dependencies still resolve.
  2. Choose fabrication and assembly. Check the board’s manufacturing requirements, component availability, assembly capability, and whether the service accepts the supplied files.
  3. Source exact-compatible parts. Do not substitute a display, ESP32 module, battery circuit, connector, or button merely because it looks similar. Footprints, controller variants, protection arrangements, and clearances matter.
  4. Make the enclosure. The released case files can support 3D-printed or resin-produced parts. Plan for button fit, battery clearance, speaker openings, USB-C access, and microSD alignment; the required finishing and fasteners depend on the revision.
  5. Inspect before power-up. Check battery polarity, solder bridges, connectors, USB-C power paths, and the charging/protection circuit. Current-limited power is sensible for initial testing when available.
  6. Flash the matching firmware. Use the instructions for the repository revision you selected. Board definitions, partition layouts, libraries, and flashing commands may depend on older ESP32 software.
  7. Test progressively. Verify USB and power, boot screen, display, controls, audio, microSD detection, one test application, emulator launch, save behavior, charging, and power-off operation in that order.

There is no responsibly universal 2026 command sequence to copy here. Before building, record the operating system, Arduino IDE or ESP-IDF version, ESP32 board-package version, repository commit, submodules, exact build and flash commands, serial output, and recovery steps for a failed flash.

Programming beyond games

Project materials describe Arduino IDE compatibility, MicroPython-related development, custom firmware, and microSD-loaded applications. A notable design choice is that external sketches or applications can be launched from the card without reflashing the main firmware. The wireless radios invite experiments with networked sensors, automation controls, and small robots.

Treat this as a project-era development model, not a promise that every current Arduino release or MicroPython package works without adjustment. A 2021 ESP32 project may require archived libraries, an older board definition, or changes to build scripts. Verify the toolchain against the specific repository revision.

Historical firmware features

A February 2021 development update described firmware 0.6 with saveable game state for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Sega Master System, and Game Gear; non-volatile configuration storage; automatic saving reportedly every 30 seconds; and resume behavior after power-off. These are features reported for that historical firmware version, not evidence that 0.6 is the latest build in 2026 or that an unverified derivative behaves identically.

Strengths and compromises

Strengths Compromises

Who should consider it?

Choose microByte if you want a very small physical handheld, an open PCB and enclosure, ESP32 programming practice, custom games or applications, or a project that combines electronics with retro gaming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look elsewhere if you need a currently supported retail product, a large screen, comfortable long-session controls, broad 16-bit-or-later emulation, a solder-free build, guaranteed compatibility, or a modern turnkey SDK. Mass-market emulator handhelds are generally easier to buy and use; Raspberry Pi-based projects can be more capable but are larger and more power-hungry. Projects such as Pocket Sprite, ODROID-GO, and ESPlay Micro V2 have different screen sizes, hardware, availability, and openness, so they are not direct equivalents.

Availability in 2026

The original Crowd Supply campaign is historical, and its listing currently says the product is unavailable. Do not treat the $45 and $60 campaign tiers as current prices or imply that official replacement parts, warranty service, or current firmware support are routinely available. A second-hand unit or a reproduction from the released files may still be possible, but each has different risks: provenance and battery condition for used hardware, and manufacturing, licensing, and tooling work for a reproduction.

microByte’s strongest case is not that it is the cheapest way to play retro games. Its value is the unusual combination of tiny size, open hardware, programmability, wireless connectivity, and educational potential. It is best understood as an open embedded-systems project with gaming built in—not as a modern replacement for a powerful commercial emulator handheld.
