NVIDIA’s optional GeForce Hotfix 531.58, released April 5, 2023, targeted random The Last of Us Part I crashes during gameplay on GeForce RTX 30-series GPUs. It also addressed stability issues in Assassin’s Creed Origins and image corruption in Resident Evil 4 when FXAA was enabled. This was a driver update—not a complete fix for the troubled PC port—and NVIDIA later rolled its relevant fixes into the regular 531.61 WHQL Game Ready driver.
What NVIDIA’s 531.58 hotfix changed
Hotfix 531.58 was an out-of-band Windows display-driver release based on GeForce Game Ready Driver 531.41. It was optional and distributed for manual download and installation rather than through the normal GeForce Experience update channel. NVIDIA hotfixes are targeted releases intended to address specific problems before a subsequent regular driver; they are not game patches. HotHardware’s report on the release describes its scope as follows:
| Game | Issue addressed | Important scope |
|---|---|---|
| The Last of Us Part I | Random crashes during gameplay | NVIDIA’s stated issue specifically identified GeForce RTX 30-series GPUs. |
| Assassin’s Creed Origins | Stability issues | The subsequent 531.61 release notes also list an Assassin’s Creed Origins stability issue associated with driver 531.18. |
| Resident Evil 4 (2023 remake) | Image corruption with FXAA enabled | The hotfix report identifies this specific graphics issue; it does not describe a general performance fix. |
The distinction in GPU scope matters. NVIDIA’s The Last of Us crash note names RTX 30-series hardware. The published description does not establish that RTX 40-series owners received the same game-specific benefit, nor does it say the other two games’ fixes were limited to RTX 30-series cards. NVIDIA’s 531.61 release notes retained the RTX 30-series wording for the The Last of Us issue.

At the time, 531.58 was most relevant to a Windows player with an RTX 30-series GPU who was experiencing random in-game crashes in The Last of Us Part I and wanted a targeted fix before the next regular release. It was less compelling if the game was stable, if the symptoms matched a separate game bug, or if the user preferred to wait for a standard WHQL driver.

NVIDIA released GeForce Game Ready Driver 531.61 as a regular WHQL release on April 13, 2023. Its fixed-issues list included the relevant The Last of Us and Assassin’s Creed Origins problems, making it the better replacement once available. See NVIDIA’s 531.61 driver page. The 531.58 hotfix is now an archival 2023 driver, not a sensible general-purpose recommendation in 2026. Install a current supported driver for your GPU and Windows version instead; use an old build only for a carefully justified legacy rollback or test.
Naughty Dog’s game patch fixed different problems
NVIDIA’s driver fix did not replace Naughty Dog’s separate PC patch 1.0.1.7. That game update addressed issues including Xbox controller stick inputs briefly reading as zero, incorrect Graphics settings after using “Reset to Default,” performance impact from HUD performance monitors, a crash when using Alt+Enter to switch display modes, a memory crash while moving from the end of the game to the credits, and a crash during launch. It also added crash-report logs to help developers investigate failures. These game-side fixes were reported by HotHardware.

In practical terms, a player could need both updates: the game patch for a launch, input, settings, or Alt+Enter problem, and a compatible driver for the RTX 30-series gameplay-crash issue NVIDIA listed. A crash at launch or during the credits transition should not automatically be attributed to the NVIDIA hotfix’s narrower in-game stability fix.
What the hotfix did not promise to solve
531.58 was not a comprehensive repair for The Last of Us Part I on PC. The game had other reported problems, including long shader compilation, performance or stability dips while shaders compiled, launch failures, possible memory pressure or leaks, mouse and camera jitter, and visual glitches such as corrupted-looking textures, wet-looking characters, or NPCs that appeared to float or T-pose. The hotfix report discussed these separately from NVIDIA’s listed driver fix.

- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
A stability fix also does not imply higher frame rates, less VRAM use, an end to shader stutter, or resolution of every out-of-memory condition. NVIDIA’s later 556.12 release, for example, listed an out-of-memory issue with 555.xx drivers in The Last of Us Part I, a reminder that driver interactions could change over time. See NVIDIA’s 556.12 driver page.

- Update the game through Steam or the relevant PC storefront, then verify its files if problems persist.
- Install a current NVIDIA driver supported for your GPU and Windows version, then restart Windows. Do not install 531.58 simply because it was the 2023 hotfix.
- Let shader compilation finish before judging performance. Interruptions or heavy shader work can make early play feel unstable or slow.
- Test without overlays and monitoring utilities. If the issue stops, re-enable them one at a time to identify a conflict.
- Reduce VRAM-heavy settings if the game reports memory pressure or crashes under load; a driver update cannot add graphics memory.
- Note when the crash occurs: at launch, during gameplay, after Alt+Enter, or during the credits transition. That timing can help distinguish driver stability from a game-side issue addressed by patch 1.0.1.7.
- If several games crash, investigate system-wide causes such as unstable overclocks, memory errors, overheating, driver corruption, or Windows problems rather than assuming this one title explains them all.
For a historical installation of a hotfix, the usual process was to identify the GPU in Windows Settings → System → About or by running dxdiag and checking the Display tab, download the driver from NVIDIA, close games and GPU-intensive applications, run the installer, and restart. Choosing Custom (Advanced) allowed a clean installation. A restore point or keeping the prior driver installer can help with recovery if an optional build causes regressions. NVIDIA’s current driver pages are preferable to an unverified archival download link.

The takeaway
GeForce Hotfix 531.58 was a focused, temporary driver response: it targeted random The Last of Us Part I gameplay crashes on RTX 30-series GPUs, while also listing fixes for Assassin’s Creed Origins stability and Resident Evil 4 FXAA corruption. It was separate from Naughty Dog’s game patch, did not solve every PC-port problem, and was superseded by regular driver 531.61 in April 2023. Today, use a current supported driver and the latest game patch rather than treating 531.58 as a universal fix.
