A purported GeForce RTX 5090 prototype surfaced in May 2025 with four 16-pin power sockets—an unusual sight beside the retail RTX 5090’s single 16-pin input and 575W Total Graphics Power rating. The image points to an experimental or engineering board, not a newly announced retail card. It does not mean RTX 5090 buyers need four power cables.
What was spotted?
Reports published May 26–28, 2025, described a damaged or partially disassembled graphics board with four 16-pin power connectors and additional voltage-regulation hardware. HotHardware attributed the image to the X account Yuuki_ans; TweakTown also covered the purported prototype. The publication dates may reflect time zones or reposting, not separate sightings.
The identification should be treated as reported, not independently confirmed: the available coverage does not establish the board’s exact SKU, purpose, power target, or operating condition through NVIDIA documentation. A photograph of unusual hardware is not proof that NVIDIA made a retail four-connector GeForce RTX 5090.
Retail RTX 5090 versus the four-connector board
| Feature | Retail GeForce RTX 5090 | Purported prototype |
|---|---|---|
| GPU identity | Blackwell | Not independently confirmed |
| Memory | 32GB GDDR7; 512-bit interface | Not established by the sighting |
| Total Graphics Power | 575W | Unknown |
| Recommended system PSU | 1,000W in NVIDIA’s specifications | Unknown; the connector count alone cannot determine it |
| Power input on card | One 16-pin connector, supplied by a compatible PCIe Gen 5 cable or NVIDIA’s adapter arrangement | Four 16-pin sockets are visible |
| Availability | Retail RTX 5090 models are sold, subject to model and market availability | No evidence of a retail four-connector model |
| Likely role | Gaming and creator workloads | Possibly engineering, validation, or experimental power-delivery work; unconfirmed |
NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 specifications list 21,760 CUDA cores, 32GB GDDR7, a 512-bit memory interface, 575W Total Graphics Power, and a recommended 1,000W system power supply. Those are the useful reference points for buyers; the prototype image does not revise them.

Why put four connectors on a prototype?
Several engineering explanations are plausible, but none is confirmed for this board. Multiple inputs can let engineers experiment with how current is distributed across connectors, cables, PCB copper, and voltage-regulator stages. They may also provide flexibility while testing transient loads, alternative VRM layouts, or power-delivery limits.
A board built for extreme overclocking or laboratory validation could need more electrical headroom than a shipping gaming card. Prototype designs may also include duplicated or exploratory hardware that is later changed, consolidated, or removed. These possibilities explain why an engineering sample might look dramatically different without implying a product launch or better gaming performance.

Does four connectors mean 2,400 watts?
No measured power figure follows from the photograph. A compatible 16-pin PCIe Gen 5 connection is commonly associated with power delivery up to about 600W. Multiplying that nominal figure by four gives a theoretical aggregate of roughly 2,400W, but that is connector capacity arithmetic—not a verified board power limit, sustained draw, or safe system requirement.

The image reveals neither how the four sockets were wired nor whether all were intended to supply power simultaneously. HotHardware framed 2,400W as a theoretical possibility, not a measurement.

Is it a Titan, RTX 5090 Ti, or AI card?
The connector layout invites speculation about a higher-power GeForce, a Titan-class successor, a workstation board, a future design test vehicle, or a board intended for extreme overclocking. None of those identities is confirmed. Four sockets do not establish a product name, clock speed, launch plan, or commercial intent.
An AI or data-center purpose is also possible but unverified. Blackwell products across categories can share architectural or design similarities, so appearance alone is not enough to identify a bare or damaged board as a gaming card or accelerator. Treat the reported RTX 5090 identification as a claim about the sighting, not as proof of its exact model or workload.

What RTX 5090 buyers actually need to know
The Founders Edition uses one 16-pin input. NVIDIA’s product information and user guide describe powering it with a compatible 600W-class PCIe Gen 5 cable or the included adapter with the required PCIe 8-pin leads. NVIDIA documentation varies in how it describes the adapter’s 8-pin cable configuration: its comparison page specifies four, while product and guide wording describes three or four depending on configuration. Follow the instructions for the exact graphics card and PSU rather than combining those descriptions into a universal rule.

Confirm that the PSU has adequate continuous capacity and the correct supported cable; use separate PCIe leads for adapter inputs as required by the manufacturers, not an unsuitable daisy-chain arrangement. Do not assume modular PSU cables are interchangeable between models, even when the plugs appear to fit.

Seat the high-power connector fully and follow the manufacturer’s cable-bend guidance. Check space for the card, connector, and cable before closing the case, and provide appropriate support for a large, heavy card. NVIDIA lists the Founders Edition’s reference dimensions as 304mm long and 137mm wide; board-partner cards vary, so use the dimensions for the exact model. Power delivery also does not remove thermal limits: any substantially higher-power design would need cooling suited to it.
The prototype’s four sockets are not an installation instruction for a retail RTX 5090. They are not evidence that the retail card needs four 16-pin cables, a 2,400W PSU, or an extreme-overclocking setup. For current card requirements, consult NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product page and user guide, alongside the documentation for your specific card and power supply.
