macOS Catalina 10.15 and later cannot run native 32-bit Mac games. If your game has a Windows version, you may be able to play it with CrossOver, a Windows virtual machine, or—on an Intel Mac—Boot Camp. If it is Mac-only, your practical options are a compatible Intel Mac running macOS Mojave or earlier, a newer port, or another way to play it.
Start by identifying whether the game is a Mac or Windows application. The label “32-bit” alone does not tell you which solution will work.
First, identify what kind of game you have
There are several different things people mean by “32-bit game”: a native 32-bit Mac application, a 32-bit Windows game, a DOS game, or even a modern game with an old installer. Those cases need different solutions.
- Check the game’s operating-system version. If you bought it on Steam, check the game’s store page and properties for Mac and Windows builds. A Mac build can be unsupported while the Windows version remains available. Steam says affected games remain in users’ libraries and may still run on Mojave or earlier, Windows, or, in many cases, Linux (Steam’s 32-bit Mac games guidance).
- Check your Mac. Open Apple menu > About This Mac. “Processor: Intel” means Intel; “Chip: Apple M…” means Apple silicon.
- Check what the installer actually is. A Windows
.exeis not a Mac game, even if you bought it through Steam. A Mac.appcan also be a wrapper or launcher, rather than the game itself. Some games have a 64-bit launcher but still rely on 32-bit components.
On older macOS versions, selecting an app in Finder and choosing File > Get Info can offer clues about its architecture, but it is not a definitive test for every app wrapper or installer.

Choose a route
| What you have | Mac | Try first | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native 32-bit Mac game | Intel, already on Mojave or earlier | Run it in macOS | Mojave 10.14 was the last macOS release to support 32-bit apps. |
| Native 32-bit Mac game | Intel, on Catalina or later | Use Mojave on a separate installation, or an older compatible Intel Mac | Not every Intel Mac supports Mojave; old OS software has security and maintenance trade-offs. |
| Native 32-bit Mac game | Apple silicon | Find a modern port, stream it, or use another computer | Rosetta is not a way to restore the 32-bit Mac runtime. |
| 32-bit Windows game | Intel | Try CrossOver; consider a Windows VM or Boot Camp if needed | Boot Camp runs Windows directly but is limited to supported Intel Macs. |
| 32-bit Windows game | Apple silicon | Try CrossOver; use a Windows 11 ARM VM if needed | Windows runs on ARM, with another translation layer for many x86 games. |
| DOS-era game | Intel or Apple silicon | Try DOSBox, ScummVM, or a suitable source port | These tools are for compatible DOS games or engines, not arbitrary Windows games. |
Why Catalina broke some Mac games
Apple ended support for 32-bit Mac applications with macOS Catalina 10.15. macOS Mojave 10.14 was the last release with that support. This does not mean every old game stopped working, nor does it mean every 32-bit Windows game is blocked. It is specifically native 32-bit Mac software that cannot run directly in Catalina or later. See Apple’s 32-bit app guidance.
If the developer offers a 64-bit update, that is usually the cleanest fix. A warning you saw before upgrading is not proof that the game will work on the newer system; check for an update or a supported alternate version.
Option 1: Run a native Mac game in Mojave
This is the most direct route when the game is Mac-only and depends on 32-bit Mac software. It requires an Intel Mac that supports Mojave. Apple silicon is not a practical host for this old Mac runtime.
- Confirm the Mac is Intel and check that its exact model supports macOS Mojave.
- Back up your Mac before changing disks, partitions, or operating systems.
- Obtain Mojave through Apple’s official installer or recovery route where available.
- When possible, install Mojave on a separate volume, external drive, or separate Mac rather than replacing your everyday system.
- Boot into Mojave, install the game, and test any disc, activation, or launcher requirements while you still have access to the installation media and account.
A separate installation lets you keep a current macOS setup for everyday use and boot into Mojave only for the older game. Be careful when selecting a disk or volume: installing an old operating system can erase data if you choose the wrong target. Mojave is obsolete, so avoid using it as an internet-facing system for sensitive activity. Compatibility with Mojave does not guarantee that an old installer, 32-bit driver, DRM component, activation server, or disc-based copy protection will still work.
Option 2: Use an older Intel Mac
If a game is Mac-only and relies on old frameworks, graphics APIs, drivers, or an unusual installer, a compatible Intel Mac running Mojave or earlier can be more reliable than trying to translate it on a modern system. This is especially useful if you already have access to one.

The trade-off is that the computer and operating system are old: hardware may be failing, security updates are limited or unavailable, and the game’s online services may have shut down. Treat this as a way to preserve or play older software, not a recommendation for a sensitive everyday computer.
Option 3: Run the Windows version with CrossOver
CrossOver is a Wine-based compatibility layer that runs many Windows applications without installing a full copy of Windows. It is a good first test when the Mac build is 32-bit but a Windows game build exists. The game is then running as Windows software—not as the old Mac app—so CrossOver does not restore native 32-bit Mac support.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →CodeWeavers lists support for Intel and Apple-silicon Macs; its Apple-silicon requirements include macOS 11.1 or later and CrossOver 21 or later. Check the current CrossOver requirements and the entry for your specific game before installing.
- Download and install CrossOver from CodeWeavers.
- Open CrossOver and choose Install.
- Search for the game or for Steam. If using Steam, follow CodeWeavers’ Steam installation guide.
- Install the Windows game inside CrossOver’s bottle—the isolated Windows environment it creates.
- Launch it from CrossOver. If it fails, check the game-specific compatibility notes and try the suggested settings before moving to a different approach.
CrossOver can be simpler than a full Windows installation, but compatibility is game-specific. Old DirectDraw or DirectX requirements, a 16-bit installer, discontinued DRM, kernel-level drivers, anti-cheat, or particular graphics features can prevent a game from working. Even a successful launch may have black screens, missing audio, broken video, input problems, or multiplayer failures. A Windows version is necessary; CrossOver cannot run a native Mac-only .app as Windows software.
Option 4: Run Windows in a virtual machine
A virtual machine (VM) runs Windows in a window alongside macOS. Consider one if CrossOver fails or you need Windows launchers, patches, save managers, or mod tools. Parallels Desktop and VMware Fusion support Intel and Apple-silicon Macs, but Apple-silicon Macs use Windows 11 for ARM rather than a traditional x86 Windows installation. Windows ARM can run many x86 applications through translation, but that adds another compatibility hurdle for games.

Parallels Desktop offers a guided Windows 11 ARM setup for Apple silicon. Microsoft also describes the Windows 11 ARM virtual-machine route for M-series Macs in its Windows ARM FAQ. VMware Fusion is another option and supports Intel and Apple-silicon Macs; see its licensing FAQ for current personal-use terms. UTM is a free, open-source alternative, but generally demands more manual setup. Its documentation says the GitHub and Mac App Store versions have the same features; buying through the App Store supports development and provides automatic updates.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Install your chosen VM app and create a Windows virtual machine. On Apple silicon, use its Windows 11 ARM setup path.
- Complete Windows setup and install the VM’s guest tools (such as Parallels Tools) if prompted.
- Install Steam, another game launcher, or the game’s Windows installer inside Windows.
- Test the game, then adjust the VM’s memory, CPU allocation, display mode, and controller settings if needed.
A VM uses disk space and memory, and its 3D performance is often below a native Windows PC. Windows installation and activation requirements depend on your setup. A VM may be more complete than Wine for Windows utilities, but it still may not support old drivers, anti-cheat, DRM, or the graphics features a game needs. On Apple silicon, check both Windows ARM compatibility and the game’s own requirements.
Option 5: Use Boot Camp on an Intel Mac
Boot Camp installs Windows on a supported Intel Mac and lets you choose macOS or Windows when the computer starts. Because Windows runs directly on the Mac rather than inside a VM, this can be a better choice when a game needs stronger graphics access or performs poorly in virtualization. It is not available on Apple-silicon Macs. Apple’s Boot Camp requirements specify supported Intel models and Windows 10.
- Back up your Mac and confirm the model is supported.
- Make sure you have at least 64 GB of free storage; Apple says 128 GB or more provides a better experience.
- Open Applications > Utilities > Boot Camp Assistant and follow its installation prompts.
- Install Windows and Apple’s Windows support software and drivers, then install the game or launcher.
- Restart while holding the Option key to choose which operating system to start.
Boot Camp requires restarting to switch systems and is not a general recommendation to install Windows 11 on any older Intel Mac. Check Apple’s requirements and Windows compatibility for your particular model before proceeding.

If the game was designed for DOS, DOSBox may be more suitable than a Windows VM. ScummVM supports particular adventure games and engines; it is not a general-purpose launcher for every old title. Some games have maintained source ports, remasters, or updated releases, including versions sold with a preconfigured compatibility setup. Check the supported games list and use files from a legitimate copy of the game.

A game’s installer can also be older than the game itself: a 32-bit Windows game may come with a 16-bit setup program that will not run in a modern Windows environment. In that case, look for a current installer from the publisher or storefront, or see whether a game-specific preservation project provides a legitimate, documented route. Do not rely on unknown repacks or cracked executables.
Troubleshooting common failures
CrossOver installs the game, but it will not launch
- Confirm that you installed the Windows build inside the Windows Steam client or other Windows environment—not the old Mac build.
- Check whether the launcher, installer, DRM, or anti-cheat component is unsupported.
- Look up compatibility notes for the exact game and CrossOver version. If the storefront copy fails, a publisher-provided standalone installer may behave differently.
- If the game still fails, try a Windows VM. On an Intel Mac, Boot Camp is another possibility when performance or graphics compatibility is the issue.
The game opens to a black screen, has broken video, or has no sound
Old graphics assumptions, video codecs, fullscreen behavior, or audio components can be the cause. Try windowed mode, check whether the game offers a supported graphics setting, and consult its compatibility notes for a recommended configuration. A VM or a source port may work better for some games. Do not assume that changing a generic setting will fix a title with unsupported graphics or codecs.
The installer will not run
Check whether it is a 16-bit installer, not just whether the game is 32-bit. First look for a newer installer from the game’s publisher or store. If the game is genuinely DOS software, try DOSBox; if it is a Windows game with an obsolete setup program, a compatible older Windows installation may be necessary.
The game works, but multiplayer does not
Old servers, launchers, certificates, or matchmaking services may have been discontinued. Running the game on a compatible operating system cannot restore an offline service. Look for LAN support, community servers, a source port, or a modern release if available.
The game is slow in a VM
Confirm that the VM uses the correct guest architecture, install its guest tools, check that it has adequate memory and disk space, and verify that 3D acceleration is enabled if the VM supports it. On Apple silicon, remember that an x86 game may be translated inside Windows ARM. A compatibility layer or, on a supported Intel Mac, Boot Camp may perform better for a particular game—but results vary by title.
If none of the options works
Check for a 64-bit update, remaster, source port, GOG edition, or console release before giving up on the game. A cloud-gaming service may have the title, or you may be able to stream it from a Windows PC you already own. If the Mac-only game depends on obsolete Mac components, a compatible older Intel Mac may be the most dependable solution. None of these alternatives can restore a game’s discontinued servers or guarantee that old activation systems still work.
