The PS5’s custom CPU is closest on paper to an AMD Ryzen 7 3700X: both use Zen 2 and have eight cores. That does not mean the console contains a 3700X or performs exactly like one. Depending on the game and workload, the PS5’s practical CPU performance may overlap with a Ryzen 5 3600 as well. Treat either desktop chip as a reference point, not an exact equivalent.

PS5 CPU specifications

Sony specifies the PS5 processor as a custom AMD Zen 2 CPU with eight cores and a variable frequency of up to 3.5 GHz. It is part of a custom processor design that combines the console’s CPU and GPU. Sony does not give it a retail Ryzen model name or publish a desktop-style specification sheet with a stated thread count. Sony’s hardware specifications and PS5 FAQ describe the CPU as custom Zen 2 hardware.

Specification PS5 CPU AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
Architecture Custom AMD Zen 2 AMD Zen 2
Cores 8 8
Threads Not stated in Sony’s public specification 16
Clock specification Variable, up to 3.5 GHz 3.6 GHz base; up to 4.4 GHz boost
Design Custom console processor, with CPU and GPU in the SoC Desktop CPU; requires a separate graphics card

The Ryzen 7 3700X’s published specifications include eight cores, 16 threads, a 3.6 GHz base clock, boost up to 4.4 GHz and a 65 W default TDP. Those numbers make it a useful desktop comparison, but the two products have different clock behavior, power and thermal conditions, and system designs. See AMD’s Ryzen 7 3700X specifications.

Why the Ryzen 7 3700X is the closest technical comparison

The match is straightforward at the broadest level: both are eight-core Zen 2 processors from the same generation. That makes the 3700X a more useful specification-level analogy than simply naming any eight-core Ryzen. But the PS5 is not a desktop 3700X running at a fixed 3.5 GHz. Sony specifies a variable maximum frequency, and the custom console processor operates within a system designed around the console’s shared hardware and power limits.

Nor does an eight-core count settle the question. Performance also depends on per-core speed, cache, workload, power limits, software scheduling, and how a game divides tasks. Sony’s public specification does not provide every desktop-style detail needed for a direct chip-for-chip comparison.

Could the PS5 be closer to a Ryzen 5 3600 in games?

Sometimes, as a practical gaming comparison—not as a definitive match. The Ryzen 5 3600 is a six-core, 12-thread Zen 2 desktop processor with a 3.6 GHz base clock and boost up to 4.2 GHz. Its generation and clock range make it a reasonable reference for some game workloads, where performance does not scale simply with the number of cores. AMD lists its specifications on the Ryzen 5 3600 product page.

Which desktop CPU seems closer depends on what is being compared. The Ryzen 7 3700X is the cleaner match for architecture and core count. A Ryzen 5 3600 may be a useful point of comparison in some CPU-limited gaming scenarios. Neither is a guaranteed performance equivalent: results vary with the game, frame-rate target, graphics settings, PC background tasks, and the GPU in the system.

What “comparable” means

  • Architecture: A desktop Zen 2 processor is the closest generation match.
  • Core count: The Ryzen 7 3700X matches the PS5’s eight-core specification.
  • Clock range: The PS5’s maximum variable frequency of 3.5 GHz is in the broad range of Zen 2 desktop clocks, but it is not equivalent to a desktop base or boost clock.
  • Gaming performance: It depends on the game and full system; performance may overlap with different Zen 2 desktop CPUs in different situations.
  • Newer CPU comparison: A newer Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 may be substantially faster. The Ryzen tier or core count alone does not establish equivalence; generation and design matter.

A PS5-equivalent PC needs more than a comparable CPU

A Ryzen 7 3700X by itself cannot reproduce PS5 performance. A PC also needs a discrete graphics card, memory, SSD storage, a compatible motherboard and power supply, an operating system, and game settings that make the comparison meaningful. The PS5 is a complete platform with a custom CPU/GPU design, 16 GB of unified GDDR6 memory, storage hardware, and software built for a fixed target.

Console games can be optimized for known hardware and a defined set of performance modes. PC games have to run across many combinations of CPUs, GPUs, drivers, operating systems, and memory. Conversely, a PC’s CPU may have different sustained clocks and more system tasks to handle. Resolution, frame-rate mode, ray tracing, engine behavior, and whether the game is CPU- or GPU-limited all affect the result. Comparing one processor cannot predict the whole system’s frame rate.

How to use the comparison when reading PC requirements

If a PC game lists a Ryzen 5 3600 or Ryzen 7 3700X as a recommended processor, do not infer that the PS5 version uses that exact CPU level—or that a PC with that chip will match the console. PC requirements may include headroom for background services and varied hardware, while console versions can use different settings, engine paths, or thread scheduling. A GPU bottleneck can also hide CPU differences. Use the names as rough Zen 2-era reference points, not as a conversion formula for console performance.

Should you buy a Ryzen 7 3700X to match a PS5?

Not solely for that reason. The 3700X is an older AM4 desktop processor, and matching its generation does not guarantee PS5-like results. For a new PC, compare current CPU platforms and the graphics card as a complete system, along with your target resolution and frame rate. If you already have a compatible AM4 motherboard and DDR4 memory, an older Ryzen may be worth considering as an upgrade, but the right choice depends on the specific system and current availability and pricing. Do not assume an old processor is the best-value choice just because it resembles the PS5 CPU on paper.
