Use Valve’s Steam Mobile app to set up and use Steam Guard on an iPhone or Android phone. The mobile authenticator can approve sign-ins, scan Steam QR codes, or show a temporary code to enter manually. During setup, save the recovery code somewhere secure; it can help you regain access if you lose the phone.
What Steam Guard does—and what you need
Steam Guard is Steam’s extra sign-in protection: when Steam asks for additional verification, your password alone is not enough. The Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator is the feature inside the Steam Mobile app. It can provide a rotating Steam Guard code, approve a sign-in, or let you scan a QR code to sign in.
Steam’s Mobile Authenticator FAQ lists iOS 13.0 or later and Android 5.0 or later as supported requirements (checked August 2026; requirements can change). You also need your Steam account credentials and an accurate phone clock. A mobile number is strongly recommended for recovery and phone transfers, but Steam’s setup flow may let you continue without one.
Install Steam Mobile only from an official app-store listing or Steam’s own download page. Do not install an authenticator sent through a message or enter your Steam credentials or codes on a site that is not operated by Valve. See Steam’s account-security guidance.

Set up the Mobile Authenticator
- Install and open the official Steam Mobile app, then sign in.
- Open the Steam Guard tab (usually shown with a shield icon).
- Select Add authenticator and follow the prompts.
- If asked, enter a phone number with the correct country prefix, then enter the confirmation code Steam sends. If you do not have a number, use the setup option for continuing without one if it is offered.
- Write down or securely store the recovery code shown during setup. Do not confuse it with the temporary authenticator code or an SMS code.
- Return to the Steam Guard screen and confirm that the authenticator is active and showing a current code.
Steam’s official setup walkthrough covers the flow. You can view the recovery code later in Steam Mobile under Steam Guard → gear icon → Recovery Code, according to Steam’s FAQ. Keep it private: it is for account recovery, not routine sign-in.
Use Steam Guard to sign in
Approve a sign-in notification
- Begin signing in to Steam on a computer or browser and enter your account name and password if requested.
- Open Steam Mobile when the sign-in request arrives.
- Check the details shown in the app. Approve only if the attempt is yours; deny anything you did not start.
The app may show sign-in details, including an approximate location for QR sign-ins. A notification is an authentication request, not a harmless alert.
Enter a rotating code
- In Steam Mobile, open Steam Guard.
- Tap Show Steam Guard code, if that option appears.
- Enter the current code on the Steam Client or website sign-in screen.
Steam Guard codes change every 30 seconds and can be used once. If a code expires while you are entering it, wait for the next one rather than resubmitting the old code. The phone does not need internet just to generate the code, but its date and time must be accurate. See the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator FAQ.

Scan a Steam QR code
- On the Steam Client or Steam website, choose the sign-in option that displays a Steam QR code.
- In Steam Mobile, open Steam Guard and choose Scan a QR code.
- Point the camera at the code, review the sign-in details in the app, and approve only if they match your action.
QR sign-in can spare you from manually entering your account name, password, and code, but it is still an approval. Do not scan codes displayed by suspicious websites or sent by strangers.
Phone number and account options
To add or change your number, sign in to Steam, open the profile-name menu, choose Account Details, then look under Contact Info for Add a phone number or Manage your phone number. Labels can vary between the app, desktop client, and website; the destination is Account Details → Contact Info. Steam allows one phone number on an individual account at a time, though the same number may be used on multiple accounts. Some VoIP numbers may be rejected because they do not meet Steam’s security requirements.
One Steam Mobile app can authenticate multiple Steam accounts: on the Steam Guard tab, use the account drop-down and select Add an account. That does not mean one Steam account can have multiple Mobile Authenticators active at once; Steam’s FAQ says an account can have only one at a time.

Troubleshooting
Steam rejects the code
- Confirm that the app is showing the code for the Steam account you are signing into.
- Wait for a fresh code and enter it before it expires.
- Set the phone’s date, time, and time zone to automatic, then retry.
- If the code still fails, use Steam’s official account-recovery process.
Incorrect phone time is a known reason for invalid codes. Generating a code does not require internet, but accurate timekeeping does.

Check the number and country prefix, make sure the carrier accepts messages from Steam’s short-code sender, and check for a full or filtered SMS inbox. Avoid repeatedly requesting codes: delivery can be delayed, and Steam may temporarily stop sending messages after too many requests. If it continues, contact Steam Support. In some regions, Telegram may be offered as an alternate delivery method for a number with an active Telegram account; this is not available everywhere.
No sign-in notification appears
Check that Steam Mobile is online and signed into the correct account. If you need to sign in immediately, use Show Steam Guard code or QR sign-in instead. Deny any request you did not initiate, even if you are waiting for a different sign-in.

Move Steam Guard to a new phone
If you still have the old phone, install Steam Mobile on the new device, sign in, and choose Move Authenticator when offered. Steam recommends transferring rather than removing the authenticator when possible.
If the old authenticator is unavailable but you still have the account’s phone number, choose I no longer have access to my authenticator and follow the SMS-based transfer steps. Steam says a transfer may trigger a two-day trade and Community Market restriction.
Recover access after losing or resetting a phone
- Lost phone, same number: Ask your carrier whether it can restore the number to a replacement SIM or phone, then follow Steam’s transfer flow.
- Have the recovery code: Use it in Steam’s recovery process when prompted.
- No phone and no recovery code: Start with Steam’s lost or deleted authenticator recovery wizard or the mobile-authenticator issue form. Steam Support may need evidence that you own the account, especially if you cannot access its email either.
- Before selling or giving away a phone: Transfer or remove the authenticator, sign out of Steam Mobile, and factory-reset the device.
Removing is not the same as transferring: Steam says removal can result in a 15-day delay on trades and Community Market listings. Recovery options depend on the account and information available; do not assume email alone replaces the authenticator.

Trading and Community Market timing
If you use Steam trading or the Community Market, account for these Steam-stated restrictions before making a change:
- New authenticator: Trades and listings made before activation or during the first seven days after activation may be held for 15 days. Activating it does not shorten holds already in place.
- Transfer to a new phone: A two-day trade and Market restriction may apply.
- Removal: A 15-day restriction on trades and Market listings may apply.
These are Steam’s current stated conditions; the effect depends on the account and transaction. Check the official FAQ before changing your authenticator if a trade or listing is time-sensitive.
Protect your account
Never give anyone your password, Steam Guard code, SMS verification or recovery code, or authenticator-removal code. Steam says its employees and Support will not ask you for your password or mobile authenticator code. If an unexpected approval request appears, deny it; if you suspect someone has access, change your password through an official Valve page and use Steam’s recovery process. Do not approve a login just because it appeared on your phone.
