The most useful gaming-laptop accessories fix real limitations: a trackpad that is awkward for games, restricted airflow, a small built-in screen, weak audio, or too few desk connections. For most players, start with a gaming mouse; add a stand, monitor, headset, or dock only if it solves a problem you actually have.
These five categories are ranked for broad usefulness, not maximum specifications. A mouse is the easiest upgrade for nearly any player. The rest depend on whether you play at a desk, travel, run into heat or port limits, or need better team audio. Before buying, check your laptop’s exact model, ports, vent locations, GPU, and operating system.
| Accessory | Best for | Main benefit | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaming mouse | Almost everyone | More comfortable, precise control | Shape and fit matter more than headline DPI |
| Laptop stand or cooling pad | Hot laptops or uncomfortable desk posture | Clearance and airflow, or a better screen angle | Vent alignment, size, and fan noise |
| External monitor | Desk-based players | A larger or smoother display | GPU and connection must support the target mode |
| Gaming headset | Multiplayer and shared rooms | Private listening and a dedicated mic | Comfort, connection, and platform support |
| USB-C/USB4/Thunderbolt dock | Permanent desk setups | Fewer repeated plug-ins | Charging and video limits vary by laptop and dock |
1. Gaming mouse: the first upgrade for most players
A trackpad is useful for browsing, but it is a poor substitute for a mouse in shooters, strategy games, MOBAs, and many everyday PC tasks. Fit the mouse to your hand and grip before chasing a high DPI number: a comfortable shape and predictable tracking matter more than a sensor’s maximum setting.
Wired mice avoid charging and receiver placement. A modern 2.4-GHz wireless model can reduce cable clutter without the latency concerns often associated with ordinary Bluetooth; it still needs charging, and its receiver should be placed where the laptop, dock, or metal objects will not obstruct it. Bluetooth can be convenient for travel, but it is not the first choice for latency-sensitive play. Polling rate is a secondary feature, not a promise of better aim.

A mouse pad helps provide a consistent surface and need not be an expensive esports model. For example, ASUS lists the ROG Gladius III Core as a wired option and the ROG Keris II Origin as a lightweight tri-mode wireless option. These are examples, not universal picks; choose by shape, weight, connection, and budget. Skip wireless features if you do not want another device to charge.
2. Laptop stand or cooling pad: choose between quiet elevation and active airflow
A passive stand raises the laptop without adding fan noise. It is a sensible choice if the vents are cramped against a desk, or if the screen sits too low. An active cooling pad adds fans and may help a laptop sustain performance when it is thermally constrained during long gaming sessions—but results vary with the laptop’s vent layout, ambient temperature, workload, and fan settings. It does not guarantee lower temperatures or higher frame rates.
Before buying, check where the laptop draws and exhausts air. Make sure the pad does not cover an intake, supports the laptop’s size and weight, and stays stable at the angle you want. Consider noise and whether fan speed is adjustable. More fans do not automatically mean better cooling. Independent testing has reported differences between cooling-pad models on one gaming laptop, which underlines why a result on another machine is not a reliable prediction for yours (TechRadar’s cooling-pad testing).

If you suspect heat is limiting performance, compare temperatures and clock behavior under the same game or workload before and after changing the setup, using the laptop maker’s utility or a reputable monitoring tool. A pad cannot repair blocked dust, a failing fan, or a hardware problem; cleaning, servicing, or adjusting power settings may be the appropriate fix. Choose a passive stand if posture or clearance is the main issue, and an active pad only when airflow is a plausible bottleneck.
3. External monitor: the biggest desk-based display upgrade
An external screen can make a laptop feel much more like a desktop, with a larger image, a more comfortable viewing position, or better motion performance than the built-in panel. For competitive games, prioritize refresh rate, response behavior, motion clarity, and low input lag. For slower single-player games, screen size, resolution, image quality, and viewing comfort may matter more than an extreme refresh rate.
Match the monitor to what the laptop can actually render. A 1440p or 4K high-refresh display may be a poor match if the GPU cannot deliver playable frame rates at that resolution in your games. A 240-Hz screen offers little practical benefit in a game where the laptop produces far fewer frames. Also verify adaptive-sync support across the laptop GPU, monitor, and chosen connection rather than assuming every combination works.

- Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter.
- Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
- Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.
Check the laptop’s actual video output path: HDMI capability depends on the laptop, and a USB-C connector does not necessarily carry video. USB-C must support DisplayPort Alt Mode or video over USB4/Thunderbolt for the relevant connection. A dock or cable can also limit resolution, refresh rate, or adaptive sync. For the least ambiguous high-refresh setup, connect the monitor directly to the laptop where possible and verify the supported mode in the specifications for both devices and the cable.
In Windows, connect the display, open Settings > System > Display to select or arrange screens and choose the external screen as the main display if desired. Then go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and select a refresh rate supported by the laptop, connection, and monitor. Raising the display to eye level and separating it from the laptop keyboard can improve desk posture; an adjustable monitor stand or arm may help.
4. Gaming headset: private audio and clearer team chat
A headset gives you private listening and a microphone that can be more useful for team chat than a laptop’s built-in mic. Positional audio can help you interpret game sound, but no “surround” label guarantees better accuracy: virtual surround is software processing, and preferences vary. Comfort deserves as much attention as sound. Check weight, clamp force, ear-pad heat, microphone position, and fit over glasses before committing to long sessions.

A wired 3.5-mm headset is simple and broadly compatible when the laptop has the right jack. For wireless gaming, a dedicated 2.4-GHz USB receiver is generally a more suitable starting point than ordinary Bluetooth. Check whether the dongle is USB-A or USB-C, and remember that wireless brings battery and receiver management. Bluetooth can introduce delay; in headset mode it may also trade microphone quality for a two-way audio connection. Check the headset’s software and feature support for your operating system and any consoles you use.
ASUS’s TUF Gaming H1 Gen II and ROG Delta S Core are wired examples; the ROG Pelta is a tri-mode wireless example. Compare the connection and fit that suit your devices rather than treating virtual surround or a higher price as a guarantee of better sound.

A dock can gather a monitor, Ethernet, mouse, keyboard, headset, and storage around one desk connection, making it easier to move the laptop between portable and desktop use. It is principally a convenience upgrade, not an automatic gaming-performance upgrade. For a high-refresh gaming monitor, a direct HDMI or DisplayPort connection may avoid a dock’s bandwidth or video-protocol limits.

USB-C describes the connector shape, not a single set of capabilities. A port may support data but not charging or video; look up the exact laptop’s USB-C support, including DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4, or Thunderbolt where relevant. Then check the dock’s supported monitor resolution and refresh rate, number of displays, USB speeds, Ethernet, audio, and any DisplayLink requirement. Multiple displays can use more bandwidth, and DisplayLink-based video is not always appropriate for latency-sensitive gaming.
Pay particular attention to power. A dock’s advertised USB-C power delivery does not mean it can supply the wattage a gaming laptop needs to perform at full load. Many gaming laptops still require their original AC adapter for maximum performance. ASUS advertises the ROG Bulwark Dock DG300 with 100-W power delivery and 4K/144-Hz display support, but your laptop, cable, and connection still determine what works in practice. A multi-display dock or premium dock with extra storage may be useful for a specific workstation, but is unnecessary for many single-monitor gaming desks.
Other accessories worth considering
- External keyboard: Useful for a permanent desk setup, especially if you raise the laptop screen to a comfortable height. It is not an essential first buy for everyone.
- Ethernet cable or adapter: Worth considering if Wi-Fi stability is a problem and the router is reachable.
- Controller: A good fit for games designed around one, provided it supports your platform.
- External SSD: Useful for extra game storage, subject to the laptop’s available ports and drive compatibility.
- Portable stand or sleeve: Practical for travel when a full monitor or dock is not.
- Monitor arm or larger mouse pad: Helpful when desk space, screen height, or low-sensitivity mouse movement is the limiting factor.
A practical buying order
- Buy a mouse first if you are still gaming on the trackpad.
- Add a stand if the screen angle or blocked clearance is uncomfortable; choose active cooling only if heat and airflow are credible problems.
- Choose a monitor if you mostly play at a desk, after checking GPU performance and video-output limits.
- Add a headset if you play multiplayer, need a better mic, or want to avoid disturbing others.
- Get a dock when repeated plugging and cable clutter are the problem, after confirming video and power compatibility.
