The easiest way to play SteamVR games on a Meta Quest 3 is Valve’s free Steam Link app: install Steam and SteamVR on a Windows gaming PC, put the PC and headset on the same local network, then pair them in Steam Link. For the most dependable wireless setup, connect the PC to the router by Ethernet and use 5-GHz Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi 6/6E for the headset.
This streams PC-rendered games to the headset; it does not install Steam games on Quest 3. If you want a cable or access to Meta’s PC VR library, use Meta Quest Link or Air Link instead.
What you need to connect Quest 3 to Steam
- A set-up Meta Quest 3 with current headset software and paired controllers.
- A Windows 10-or-newer gaming PC with a VR-capable GPU and enough storage for the games you want to play.
- The Steam desktop client and SteamVR, both installed on the PC.
- The Steam Link app installed on Quest 3.
- A shared local network: ideally, the PC connected to the router by Ethernet and the headset on 5-GHz Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi 6/6E.
Valve lists Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro as supported Steam Link headsets. Its published requirements include Windows 10 or later, Steam and SteamVR, a compatible GPU and a 5-GHz wireless network. Valve’s support pages give differing minimum and recommended network and GPU guidance, so a listed minimum is a compatibility floor—not a promise that every VR game will run smoothly. Steam Link streams over your home network; a fast internet connection is not the main requirement for in-home play. Network quality between the PC, router and headset matters. A guest Wi-Fi network or separate network segments can prevent the devices from seeing one another.

Use Steam Link for wireless SteamVR
This is the simplest starting point if you want to play SteamVR titles wirelessly. Valve describes Steam Link as a way to stream PC games and VR content from a computer running Steam. Steam announced Quest support on November 30, 2023; its launch guidance requires Steam and SteamVR on the PC and the headset and computer on the same network. Interface labels can vary with software updates and language settings.
Install SteamVR on the PC
- Open Steam on your Windows PC and sign in.
- Search the Steam store for SteamVR, then install it. Steam alone is not enough for PC VR.
- Leave Steam running. If convenient, launch SteamVR once on the PC before pairing so it can complete its initial setup.
Install Steam Link on Quest 3
- Put on the headset and open the Quest store.
- Search for Steam Link, install the free app, then open it.
- Follow the app’s on-screen instructions to find and pair with the PC.
Pair the headset and launch a game
- Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet if possible. Connect Quest 3 to the same local network, using its 5-GHz or Wi-Fi 6/6E band where available.
- Make sure Steam is open on the PC and SteamVR is installed.
- Open Steam Link on Quest 3 and wait for your PC to appear.
- Select the PC. If prompted, enter the pairing PIN shown in the headset into the matching prompt on the PC.
- Run the connection test if the app offers one, then choose Launch SteamVR or the equivalent on-screen option.
- Wait for the SteamVR environment to load. Start a compatible VR title from the SteamVR interface or Steam library.
The expected result is the SteamVR environment in the headset, with Quest controllers available as VR controllers. Valve’s instructions and supported-headset information are on its Steam Link launch announcement.

Choose between Steam Link, Quest Link, Air Link and Virtual Desktop
These are different ways to connect a headset to PC content. Steam Link is Valve’s direct wireless route for SteamVR. Meta Quest Link and Air Link use Meta’s PC software and can also provide access to Meta PC/Rift titles. Virtual Desktop is a paid third-party alternative, not a required part of Steam Link.

Use a USB cable with Meta Quest Link
Choose wired Quest Link if you want to avoid Wi-Fi congestion, play a demanding simulator, or prefer a cable. It is not the same app or connection method as Steam Link. You need Meta’s Quest Link PC software, a USB 3-capable cable and a USB 3 port on the PC; the included charging cable may not be suitable for PCVR.

- Install Meta’s Quest Link PC software on the Windows PC and sign in with the Meta account used on the headset.
- Connect Quest 3 directly to a USB 3 port using a USB 3-capable cable. A USB-C-to-USB-A cable can work if both its data capability and the PC port support USB 3. Avoid an unpowered hub while troubleshooting.
- When the headset asks whether to allow access to data, choose Deny if your goal is Quest Link.
- When prompted to enable Meta Quest Link, choose Enable.
- Once the Meta PC connection is active, launch SteamVR on the PC, then start a SteamVR game.
Meta support guidance specifies a USB 3 port and the Deny data-access response before enabling Quest Link. See Meta’s Quest Link troubleshooting guidance. Exact prompts may vary by software version.
Use Air Link for wireless Meta PCVR
Air Link is Meta’s wireless PCVR feature. It is a better fit than Steam Link if you want Meta PC/Rift titles as well as SteamVR, or want Meta’s PCVR connection without a cable. Install Meta’s PC software, set up Air Link on both the PC and headset, and connect them over the same suitable local network; menu locations may change with updates. Once the PC connection is active, launch SteamVR from the PC to play SteamVR titles.

Air Link is not interchangeable with Steam Link: it uses Meta’s PCVR software stack, while Steam Link is Valve’s direct SteamVR streaming path. Both wireless methods depend on the local network and PC performance.

- Confirm Steam is open on the PC and SteamVR is installed.
- Confirm Quest 3 and the PC are on the same local network, not isolated guest networks or separate network segments.
- Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet and place the headset on the main 5-GHz or Wi-Fi 6/6E network.
- Temporarily disable VPN software, which can interfere with local device discovery.
- Check that Windows Firewall allows Steam and SteamVR to communicate on the local network.
- Close and reopen Steam Link, then restart Steam on the PC.
- If the pairing PIN fails, make sure you are entering the code for the currently detected PC. If the app offers a way to remove an old or duplicate PC entry, remove it and pair again.
- Restart the headset and PC. If discovery still fails, restart the router.
Valve recommends a wired PC-to-router connection and 5-GHz Wi-Fi for Steam Link; Wi-Fi 6/6E is a more conservative target in its support guidance. A slower 2.4-GHz connection is not the preferred choice when a suitable 5-GHz network is available.
Fix lag, stutter or blurry streaming
Wireless video quality depends on the network as well as the PC. Improve the connection first, then reduce the load on the game and stream.
- Wire the PC to the router with Ethernet.
- Move closer to the router and use 5-GHz Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi 6/6E for Quest 3.
- Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth streams on the network.
- Lower streaming quality or bitrate in the streaming app if the connection cannot sustain the current setting.
- Reduce the game’s resolution or graphics settings, particularly in demanding simulators or heavily modded games.
- Try a less demanding VR game. If that runs acceptably, the original game may be exceeding the PC’s graphics or encoding capacity.
- Compare with wired Meta Quest Link if you need to determine whether the wireless network is the bottleneck.
Valve’s published GPU minimums vary by support page: one lists NVIDIA GTX 970-or-better and AMD RX 570-or-better, with exceptions for RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT due to hardware-encoding limitations. Those figures do not guarantee smooth performance in every title. High-resolution games, flight and racing simulators, advanced graphics settings and wireless encoding can demand substantially more GPU capacity.

- Verify that the cable supports USB 3 data, not just charging, and that it is plugged into a USB 3 port.
- Connect directly to the PC rather than through an unpowered hub; try another port and cable if available.
- Confirm Meta’s PC software is installed and signed in.
- Respond to the headset prompts as described above: deny data access for Link, then enable Meta Quest Link.
- Temporarily turn off Air Link while testing the wired connection so you can isolate the method in use.
Can you play every Steam game on Quest 3?
No. Steam Link streams PC games, but VR play requires a SteamVR-compatible title and a PC that can run it. A game appearing in your Steam library does not necessarily mean it has a VR mode: some Steam games are flat-screen games, and some titles need a separate launcher or runtime. If a game has both flat-screen and VR versions or launch options, start its VR mode.
Quest-native games are installed and run directly on the headset; they do not need Steam Link. A Steam purchase also does not automatically include a native Quest version. With PCVR, the computer renders the game and sends its video and audio to Quest 3 while the headset returns controller input.
