To install Dolphin on Windows 11, download the correct Windows build from the official Dolphin download page, extract the archive to a writable folder, install Microsoft’s Visual C++ runtime, then launch Dolphin.exe. Dolphin does not come with games: you’ll need game dumps you created or obtained in a way permitted by your local law.
This guide covers the first setup, adding a game library, configuring a controller and graphics, and resolving common launch problems.
What Dolphin does—and what you need
Dolphin is a free, open-source emulator for Nintendo GameCube and Wii games. It recreates aspects of those consoles’ hardware in software; it is not a game store and does not include Nintendo games.

- A 64-bit Windows 11 PC and an internet connection.
- The correct Dolphin build for your processor: Windows x64 for most Intel- and AMD-based PCs, or Windows ARM64 for an ARM-based Windows device.
- A current graphics driver and enough storage for the application and your game files.
- A controller if you prefer gamepad input. A standard gamepad is often straightforward for GameCube games; Wii games may need motion, pointer, Nunchuk or other specialized input.
- Game dumps that you are legally permitted to use. Dolphin’s FAQ advises users to purchase games and create their own dumps rather than download commercial games from unauthorized sites. Laws vary by jurisdiction, so check the rules that apply to you.
Dolphin’s project lists Windows 10 version 1903 or newer, an SSE2-capable CPU, and graphics support for at least Direct3D 11.1 or OpenGL 3.3. It recommends a modern dual-core CPU around 3 GHz or better and Direct3D 11.1 or OpenGL 4.4 support. These are compatibility guidelines, not a promise that every game will run smoothly. Results depend on the game, CPU performance, GPU and drivers, graphics settings, shader compilation, peripherals and any game-specific configuration. Windows 11 meets the listed OS range, but that alone does not guarantee suitable performance.

1. Check whether your PC is x64 or ARM64
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > About.
- Look at System type and identify whether the device uses an x64 or ARM64 processor.
Choose the matching Dolphin package. Most conventional Intel- or AMD-based PCs use Windows x64; an ARM-based Windows device should use the ARM64 build. A 64-bit Windows label by itself does not identify the processor architecture. ARM64 performance and compatibility vary with the processor, graphics hardware, drivers and the game.
2. Download Dolphin from the official site
Go to dolphin-emu.org/download and select the Windows package that matches your device. Avoid similarly named download portals, repacks and bundles claiming to include games.
The download page offers different build channels:
- Release: the stability-first choice.
- Beta: generally well tested and a sensible option for most users.
- Development: updated more often, but less tested and more likely to include regressions. Choose it when you need a recent fix or feature, not simply because it is newest.
For a beginner, use the latest official release or beta shown on the download page. Build listings can change, so use the current page rather than relying on a version number in an older guide. If you are troubleshooting, first try to reproduce the problem with a current official release or beta.

Dolphin’s Windows build requires the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2022. Download it from Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable page, not a DLL-download site.
- For a typical Intel- or AMD-based Windows PC, download the current x64 package.
- For ARM64, follow Microsoft’s architecture guidance. Microsoft notes that its x64 package also contains ARM64 binaries for ARM64 devices.
- Run the installer and complete its prompts. If the runtime is already installed, the installer may offer to repair or modify it.
- Launch Dolphin after installation; restart Windows if the installer or an error message indicates it is needed.
Do not download individual MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll files from unofficial sites. Installing the correct Microsoft runtime is safer and avoids mismatched files.

4. Extract Dolphin and launch it
Dolphin’s Windows download is commonly a compressed archive, not a conventional setup wizard. Extract the archive fully before starting the program.
- Wait for the download to finish in your Downloads folder.
- Right-click the archive and choose the Windows extraction option, or use a trusted archive utility. Windows’ built-in extraction is sufficient for common formats.
- Extract the contents to a normal, writable folder, such as
C:DolphinorD:EmulatorsDolphin. - Open that extracted folder and double-click
Dolphin.exe.
Do not run the executable from inside the archive. A user-created folder is practical because it avoids common write-permission issues; avoid protected locations such as C:Windows and, for this portable-style setup, C:Program Files or C:Program Files (x86).
If Windows SmartScreen appears, confirm that you downloaded the file from the official Dolphin domain before deciding whether to proceed. Do not bypass a security warning for a file from an unknown source.
Dolphin may create configuration and user-data folders on first launch or ask where to keep user data. Choose a location you can write to with enough available space. Keep these three locations conceptually separate:
- Program folder: Dolphin’s executable and application files.
- User-data folder: configuration, saves, cache and other settings.
- Game library folder: your game dumps.
Keeping the library outside the program folder makes it easier to update Dolphin without moving your games.

5. Add a game directory
Dolphin supports several game-dump formats, including GCM/ISO, GCZ, CISO, WBFS, WIA, NFS and RVZ, according to its FAQ. The emulator does not provide any of these files.
- In Dolphin’s main window, choose the option to add or browse for a game directory.
- Select the folder that actually contains your game files. Keep game dumps in a separate library folder if possible.
- Refresh or rescan the game list if the titles do not appear immediately.
- Select one game to establish a baseline before changing enhancements or adding more files.
If no games appear, check that you selected the folder containing the files rather than its parent, that the dump is in a supported format and not still inside a ZIP or 7z archive, and that Dolphin has permission to read the folder. A damaged or incomplete dump may also fail to appear or launch.
6. Configure a controller
Choose the input configuration that matches the console the game expects. In Dolphin’s main interface, open the controller configuration:
- GameCube Controllers: configure the relevant GameCube port for a GameCube game.
- Wii Remotes: configure a Wii Remote for a Wii game. Choose an emulated or real-remote arrangement that fits your hardware and the game.
For a standard USB or Bluetooth gamepad, select the appropriate input device. If Dolphin has no suitable preset, bind the buttons and analog axes manually. A conventional gamepad can cover many GameCube controls, but Wii input is more varied: some games rely on pointer aiming, motion, a Nunchuk, a Classic Controller or another arrangement. Not every Wii title is convenient to play with an ordinary gamepad.
If a controller is visible but unresponsive, confirm that the correct console port is enabled, the correct device is selected, and buttons and axes are mapped. Some controllers offer different input modes; select the one appropriate for your device, such as XInput where applicable. Also check that another application is not capturing the controller.

7. Choose graphics settings and test one game
Start with Dolphin’s defaults. For the graphics backend, try one supported by your GPU and driver. If you encounter a problem, a useful troubleshooting sequence is:
- Try Vulkan if the driver is current.
- If it produces rendering or driver problems, try Direct3D 11.
- Try OpenGL as another compatibility option.
This is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a performance ranking: results vary by GPU, driver and game. Dolphin’s project lists Direct3D and OpenGL requirements, but one backend cannot be assumed to be best on every PC.
Run one game before enabling internal-resolution increases, anti-aliasing, texture enhancements, widescreen hacks, shader options, cheats, mods or per-game overrides. Confirm that video and audio work, the controller responds, the game reaches gameplay and performance is stable. Then change one setting at a time so you can identify what helps or causes a new problem.
Pauses during initial shader compilation can occur. Raising internal resolution and enabling visual enhancements also increases graphics workload. If a game stutters, first return to the default settings and see whether the problem remains; do not assume that every pause means Dolphin is installed incorrectly.

Fix common Dolphin problems
Dolphin will not start
Check that you chose the right architecture, extracted the archive completely and are launching Dolphin.exe from the extracted folder. Install or repair the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. If the download or extraction may be incomplete, delete the extracted folder, download again from the official site and extract to a new folder. If the executable disappeared, check Windows Security’s protection or quarantine history before restoring anything; verify its source first.

A MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll file is missing
Install or repair Microsoft’s current Visual C++ Redistributable for the application’s architecture, then relaunch Dolphin. Do not fetch the named DLL from a third-party site.
XINPUT1_3.dll is missing
This is a different issue from the Visual C++ runtime. Dolphin’s FAQ points to updating or repairing DirectX, or reinstalling Xbox 360 controller drivers, for this error. Use Microsoft or the controller manufacturer as the source; do not download a loose DLL.
Error 0xc000007b
This can result from mismatched runtimes or manually copied DLLs. Remove DLL files you added by hand from the Dolphin folder or system paths, then install the appropriate official runtimes. Avoid mixing files from different architectures.

- Update the graphics driver from the GPU or PC manufacturer.
- Try a different graphics backend.
- Disable enhancements, hacks, custom textures and modifications.
- Return to native internal resolution and test again.
- Check Dolphin’s compatibility information and any per-game settings for that title.
A backend change may help, but some problems are specific to a game or Dolphin build.
Games are missing from the list
Confirm that you added the folder containing the actual game files, refreshed the list, and have a supported dump format. Make sure files are not still inside a compressed archive and that Dolphin can read the folder. If possible, test a known-good dump before changing graphics settings.
The controller is detected but does not work
Enable the correct GameCube port or Wii Remote configuration, select the right input device, and verify each button and analog axis binding. Check the controller’s input mode and whether another app is using it. A mapped gamepad may still be unsuitable for a game that depends on Wii motion or pointer input.
Stuttering or pauses
Initial shader compilation can cause pauses, while higher internal resolution and enhancements add load. Test at defaults first, then lower enhancements and change one setting at a time. Performance depends on the game, CPU, GPU and drivers; meeting the project’s broad requirements does not ensure full speed in every title.

Update Dolphin without risking saves
- Download the newer build from the official Dolphin page and extract it into a new folder.
- Keep the old program folder and user-data folder until you have tested the new build.
- Launch the new copy and verify that your games, controller settings and saves are available. If they are not, check which user-data folder that copy is using rather than deleting the old one.
- Back up saves and configuration before removing an older installation.
Keeping the program, user data and game library separate makes it easier to identify which files need preserving when you update.
