Not anymore—not for every part of FSR 4. AMD initially launched FSR 4 with its RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 9000 cards in 2025. But as of August 18, 2026, AMD officially supports FSR Upscaling 4.1 on Radeon RX 7000 (RDNA 3) cards. That does not give RX 7000 owners every feature in AMD’s broader FSR “Redstone” suite, and it does not make FSR 4.1 available in every game.
What “RDNA 4-only” meant at launch
When AMD introduced FSR 4 alongside the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070 on February 28, 2025, its initial support was tied to the new RDNA 4 generation. AMD presented FSR 4 as a machine-learning upscaler, a departure from earlier FSR approaches, and highlighted RDNA 4’s second-generation AI accelerators as part of the hardware foundation for that work. The launch-era restriction was real: FSR 4 support was aimed at RX 9000 cards and selected games, not Radeon GPUs generally. See AMD’s RDNA 4 announcement and its RDNA overview.
That history explains why older headlines say FSR 4 is exclusive to RDNA 4. It does not describe the full support picture now. AMD subsequently extended a specific FSR 4 component—upscaling—to RX 7000 cards.
The 2026 change: FSR Upscaling 4.1 on RX 7000
AMD’s Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2 driver, released June 22, 2026, added FSR Upscaling 4.1 support for Radeon RX 7000 Series graphics cards. RX 7000 uses RDNA 3, so this is official support beyond RDNA 4—not an unofficial DLL swap or community workaround. AMD’s GPUOpen SDK 2.3 documentation separately identifies FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 support for RDNA 3 discrete GPUs. Consult the 26.6.2 release notes and GPUOpen’s SDK 2.3 overview for the respective driver and developer details.

The version labels matter. “FSR 4” is often used informally as an umbrella name, but AMD’s newer materials identify distinct components and versions. RX 7000 support for FSR Upscaling 4.1 does not establish that every FSR 4 or Redstone feature is supported on those cards.
Which Radeon generations support which FSR features?
| GPU family | Architecture | Position as of August 18, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Radeon RX 9000 | RDNA 4 | Broadest current support for AMD’s FSR “Redstone” features, subject to each feature’s game, driver and other requirements. |
| Radeon RX 7000 | RDNA 3 | Official support for FSR Upscaling 4.1 through the 26.6.2 driver path; SDK 2.3 also lists FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 for RDNA 3 discrete GPUs. Do not assume parity with RX 9000 for other Redstone components. |
| Radeon RX 6000 | RDNA 2 | No current official FSR Upscaling 4.1 support is established by the cited AMD driver and SDK materials. Future support has been reported, but it should not be treated as available until AMD publishes the relevant support and users can install it. |
| RDNA 3.5 and handheld or integrated Radeon graphics | Varies by product | Check the exact product and AMD documentation. RX 7000 desktop support does not automatically establish support on a handheld or integrated GPU. |
| Older Radeon families | RDNA 1 or earlier | No official FSR 4.x support is established in the cited AMD material. Earlier FSR versions may still be available where individual games implement them. |
AMD’s FSR SDK page distinguishes upscaling from other components, including Frame Generation and Ray Regeneration. Its SDK 2.3 material describes RX 7000 support for FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 separately from RDNA 4 improvements to Frame Generation and Ray Regeneration. In other words, “FSR 4 works on RX 7000” is too broad; “RX 7000 officially supports FSR Upscaling 4.1” is the useful, precise version.
Why RDNA 4 was the original target
FSR 4’s launch implementation used machine-learning inference, and AMD paired it with RDNA 4’s second-generation AI accelerators. That helps explain AMD’s initial RX 9000 focus. It is not evidence that every older architecture is inherently incapable of running any FSR 4-related code: AMD’s later RX 7000 upscaling support shows that the original restriction was not permanent for that component. Nor does the expansion prove that RX 7000 and RX 9000 use identical hardware paths or deliver identical performance and image quality.

Why a supported GPU may still not show FSR 4.1 in a game
GPU compatibility is only one part of the chain. FSR must also be available through the game’s implementation or an applicable AMD driver-level upgrade path. The game, its API, the driver version, and the specific FSR component all matter.
- Game-integrated support: A developer can integrate an FSR component using AMD’s SDK or an engine plugin. The relevant FSR 4 SDK documentation describes Windows 10/11 and DirectX 12 requirements for that implementation; a game using a different API or a custom implementation may behave differently. See GPUOpen’s FSR 4 release documentation.
- Driver-level upgrade: AMD introduced an FSR upgrade option for supported games that already have FSR 3.1 integration. The Adrenalin 25.3.1 notes describe that path, but it is not a promise that every FSR 3.1 title can be upgraded. Check AMD’s supported-games reference and current driver notes for the game and feature you plan to use.
If the option is missing, first confirm the exact Radeon model and installed driver, then check whether the game is listed for the relevant feature or upgrade path. An old driver, unsupported title, bundled custom DLL, or API-specific limitation can prevent the option from appearing even on a compatible GPU. A driver update does not add support automatically to every game.
What RX 7000 owners should do
If you own an RX 7000 card, you do not need to buy an RX 9000 solely to get AMD’s officially supported FSR Upscaling 4.1. Install a compatible Adrenalin driver—26.6.2 introduced support—and check the game’s support status. Test it in the games you actually play: quality and performance depend on the game, render resolution, upscaling mode, GPU tier, CPU limits, and other settings.

Do not treat this as a promise of the entire RX 9000 feature set. Frame Generation is separate from upscaling, as are Ray Regeneration and other Redstone technologies. In particular, the documented RX 7000 upscaling expansion does not by itself establish equivalent availability of Frame Generation 4.0.1 or other RDNA 4-targeted features. Also check the driver notes for your operating system: AMD documentation may identify version-specific issues, and stability can differ by driver and game. If an update causes problems in a title you rely on, consult AMD’s current notes and consider returning to a known-working driver.
What RX 6000 owners should do
For RX 6000, do not read the RX 7000 update as current support. The cited official driver and SDK materials do not establish FSR Upscaling 4.1 availability for RDNA 2 as of August 18, 2026. Secondary reporting has indicated future RX 6000 support, but that is not the same as an available driver, a confirmed release date, or a guarantee that all FSR components will be included. Until AMD documents a compatible release, use the FSR version each game actually supports. FSR 2 or FSR 3 support in a particular title is separate from FSR 4.x support.

FSR support alone is a weak reason to replace a graphics card. For an RX 7000 owner interested mainly in newer upscaling, the official 4.1 expansion may remove the need to upgrade for that feature. A buyer who specifically wants the broadest current Redstone feature set should look at RX 9000/RDNA 4, while still confirming support for the games and components that matter to them.

Compare the whole card, not just the FSR label: native raster and ray-tracing performance, VRAM, power use and PSU needs, current local price, and the games you play. Frame generation is not a substitute for a healthy base frame rate, and upscaling is useful only where a game implements the relevant path. AMD’s Radeon product listings and specification pages can help verify models, but current prices require checking retailers in your region.
Unofficial workarounds are not the same as support
Community tools and replacement DLLs have explored broader FSR compatibility, but they are not equivalent to AMD-supported integration or a documented driver path. They can break after game updates, cause crashes or visual artifacts, and create multiplayer anti-cheat or game-rule risks. Treat them as experimental edge cases rather than the default way to enable FSR, particularly in online games. For example, coverage of driver and DLL-based expansion and third-party Vulkan workarounds describes paths outside the official support guarantee.

The practical answer
The original RDNA 4-only claim was accurate for FSR 4’s launch-era support, but it is now outdated as a blanket statement. RX 9000 has the broadest current Redstone support; RX 7000 officially gets FSR Upscaling 4.1; RX 6000 support is not established in the cited official materials as of August 18, 2026. Check the exact feature, GPU, driver, and game—not just the phrase “FSR 4.”
