The 2024 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 GA403 is a premium, portable gaming laptop that makes more sense as an all-round gaming and multimedia computer than as a compact performance-maximizer. Its 120 Hz OLED display, slim aluminum chassis, strong speakers and useful battery life are compelling; the trade-offs are soldered memory, audible fans under load and less sustained GPU power than thicker gaming laptops. Choose a 32 GB configuration if you can, and buy it for the balance—not because the Ryzen 8000 name promises a major CPU leap.
This is a review of the 2024 GA403 generation, not a claim that it is the newest G14. ASUS’s official product page describes the platform, while the measured results below come from Notebookcheck’s review published February 8, 2024.
What changed in the 2024 Zephyrus G14?
ASUS redesigned the G14 around a slimmer aluminum chassis and a 14-inch OLED screen, shifting the emphasis from maximum gaming wattage toward portability and a more complete everyday multimedia experience. The redesign also brings a revised hinge and cooling layout, a diagonal Slash Lighting element on the lid, improved speakers and a 1080p infrared webcam. The memory is soldered, so the configuration you buy is the configuration you keep.

ASUS advertises the family at approximately 0.63 inches thick and 3.31 lb. Notebookcheck measured its review unit at 16.3 mm thick and 1.5 kg; figures can differ by configuration and reporting method. The change in priorities matters: the G14 remains capable of serious gaming, but a thinner chassis and a 90 W GPU power rating do not compete on equal terms with thicker laptops built to sustain higher graphics power.

Design, portability and connections
The compact aluminum body is the clearest reason to consider this generation over a thicker gaming machine. It is easier to carry as a daily work or school laptop, yet it retains discrete graphics, a full-size HDMI port, USB-A, USB-C and microSD. The Slash Lighting lid detail gives it a recognizable gaming identity without making the whole machine look like a conventional bulky gaming notebook.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePortability does not eliminate the usual compromises of a 14-inch system. The display gives less working space than a larger creator laptop, and the G14 still needs room for cooling and a power adapter during gaming. Its format favors people who move between work, media and games rather than those who want a permanently desk-bound maximum-performance system.
Is the OLED display good for games and creative work?
Yes: the 2880 × 1800, 16:10 OLED combines high pixel density, 120 Hz refresh, G-SYNC and near-instant pixel response. In Notebookcheck’s test, the panel covered 100% of sRGB and 99.6% of P3, with measured response times of 0.68 ms black-to-white and 0.62 ms grey-to-grey. Those results make motion look crisp and the panel useful for color-conscious work, provided you choose a suitable color mode.
- Display P3: a sensible choice for wide-gamut creative work.
- sRGB: preferable for standard web and office content when you want to avoid oversaturated colors.
- Native profile: suited to users who prefer the panel’s more vivid presentation.
Notebookcheck found strong calibration with the appropriate Display P3 or sRGB profile. ASUS software and profile labels can change, so use the installed software’s current controls rather than relying on an old menu path.
Brightness, reflections and HDR
The screen carries VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 branding, but that does not make it equivalent to a high-brightness mini-LED panel. Notebookcheck identifies limited peak brightness as a constraint on HDR impact. The glossy surface can also reflect lamps and windows, making it a less comfortable choice in bright rooms or direct sunlight. For demanding HDR grading or regular outdoor work, an appropriate external display may be a better tool.
PWM and eye comfort
Notebookcheck measured 960 Hz PWM at brightness settings of 60% and below on its test panel. It reported DC dimming above that threshold and no PWM at full brightness. This is a measurement of the tested panel, not a guarantee for every regional SKU, and sensitivity varies by person; anyone concerned about flicker should assess the exact unit at their usual brightness. OLED burn-in is a general long-term ownership consideration, not a failure demonstrated by the tested laptop.

Gaming performance: capable, but constrained by the thin chassis
The tested RTX 4070 configuration plays demanding games well, but the GPU’s 90 W rating with Dynamic Boost in RTINGS’ family summary is important context. An RTX 4070 Laptop GPU in this slim chassis should not be assumed to match the same GPU in a thicker machine with a higher power limit. The G14’s graphics are best judged as a deliberate performance-and-portability balance.
Notebookcheck’s RTX 4070 test unit recorded 113 fps in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III at 1080p Ultra and 72 fps at 2560 × 1440 Extreme. In Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, it recorded 49 fps at 1080p Ultra and 33 fps at 2560 × 1440 Ultra. Those are results for that review unit, game and settings—not promises for other titles or configurations.
The built-in panel’s 2880 × 1800 resolution is demanding in modern AAA games. If frame rates matter more than native resolution, try 1920 × 1200 or 2560 × 1600 rendering, reduce demanding graphics settings, or use DLSS where a game supports it. G-SYNC can smooth variable frame rates, but it cannot make a GPU render a demanding game faster.

Which GPU should you choose?
- RTX 4050: for buyers prioritizing a lower-cost entry into the format and willing to use reduced settings or render resolutions in demanding games.
- RTX 4060: the value target if priced meaningfully below an RTX 4070 model; it keeps the core gaming proposition without paying solely for the top GPU option.
- RTX 4070: the strongest choice within this chassis for buyers who want the most graphics performance the line offers and value its 8 GB of VRAM. It still has the same fundamental power and cooling constraints.
Ryzen 8000: strong performance, modest generation-to-generation change
The Ryzen 9 8945HS is an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 4 processor and remains well suited to office work, coding, multitasking and many creative workloads. But Notebookcheck found no meaningful performance improvement over the Ryzen 9 7940HS in the previous G14 generation. The Ryzen 8000 label should not be read as a dramatic CPU architecture leap; this model’s appeal comes more from the redesigned chassis, OLED, audio and overall integration.
For a buyer moving from a recent Ryzen 7000 G14, the screen and design are stronger reasons to upgrade than an expectation of a large CPU uplift. The processor is capable, but this is not a generational upgrade that changes what the machine can do across the board.
Battery life: unusually useful for a gaming laptop
The 73 Wh battery lasted 9 hours 15 minutes in Notebookcheck’s WLAN test at 150 cd/m² and slightly more than 12 hours in its video test at the same brightness. At full brightness, the WLAN result was a little over seven hours. Notebookcheck notes that Armoury Crate switches the display to 60 Hz in battery mode, an important condition behind the strong endurance result.
Expect less with a brighter screen, 120 Hz refresh, demanding browser or creative workloads, or the discrete GPU left active. OLED video can benefit from lower power use on dark content, but bright desktop pages and high screen brightness change the equation. Battery gaming is not a substitute for plugged-in performance: expect both shorter runtime and lower graphics performance.
Fan noise, heat and performance modes
The G14 can be unobtrusive at low load, but its fans are plainly audible when it is working hard. Notebookcheck measured approximately 46.2 dB(A) in Performance mode and up to 52.8 dB(A) in Turbo mode. In one The Witcher 3 Quiet-mode test, it measured 37.5 dB(A). These are measurements under the review’s test conditions, not fixed noise levels for every game or room.

During heavy use, parts of the chassis exceeded 45°C, including the bottom. In Notebookcheck’s stress test, its power balance was approximately 24 W for the CPU and 65 W for the GPU. The keyboard stayed cooler than the area above it in that testing, but demanding workloads are better suited to a desk than a lap.
- Silent or Quiet: a better fit for office tasks and media, with lower performance.
- Performance: the practical gaming setting for balancing speed and fan noise.
- Turbo: for extracting more performance when higher noise is acceptable.
A stand can help keep airflow clear on a desk, but it does not remove the laptop’s underlying cooling and power limits.

Notebookcheck regarded the input devices and speakers as strengths. The keyboard is comfortable for mixed work and gaming, while the large trackpad is responsive for everyday navigation. The six-speaker system is a notable advantage for a 14-inch gaming laptop when watching video or listening without headphones. The 1080p webcam includes infrared facial recognition for Windows Hello, a useful upgrade over the low-resolution cameras common in older gaming laptops.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There is no dedicated numeric keypad, as is typical at this size. The keyboard and palm-rest fit will depend on hand size and preference, and the 14-inch screen can feel cramped for long editing timelines even when its image quality is excellent.
Upgradeability: choose memory carefully
RAM is soldered, so it cannot be upgraded later. Some configurations have 16 GB, while others offer 32 GB. Sixteen gigabytes can work for ordinary office use and many games, but it leaves less room for heavier creative projects, development tools or virtual machines over a long ownership period. If those workloads matter, choose 32 GB at purchase.
Storage is the more plausible upgrade path, but the available evidence does not establish the service procedure or warranty implications for every regional model. Check the service documentation for the exact SKU before opening the laptop. Also check the model code, memory, GPU, display and operating system on the listing: the G14 family name alone does not confirm a specific configuration.
How it compares with other compact premium laptops
The right alternative depends on what you want the G14’s balance to do. Notebookcheck’s comparison set includes the previous G14, Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14, Razer Blade 14, ASUS Zenbook Pro 14 OLED and MacBook Pro 14. Current prices and configurations vary, so these are category-level decision points rather than claims that one is always the better buy.
| Alternative | Consider it when… | Trade-off versus the G14 |
|---|---|---|
| Previous-generation G14 | You find a specific configuration with the performance or upgradeability features you need. | The 2024 model’s main appeal is its redesigned chassis and OLED; Ryzen 8000 is not a major CPU leap. |
| Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14 | Gaming value or a more gaming-focused choice is the priority. | The G14 emphasizes a premium multimedia presentation and portable all-round use. |
| Razer Blade 14 | You want another premium compact gaming chassis and are willing to assess its price and exact SKU. | Compare the actual GPU power limits and configuration, not just the GPU name. |

| MacBook Pro 14 | Battery-oriented productivity and media work matter more than native Windows gaming. | It is a design and multimedia comparison, not a like-for-like Windows gaming substitute. |
Notebookcheck’s comparison set and test results provide the basis for these distinctions. For a purchase today, compare current prices, regional specifications and GPU power limits for the exact models available to you.
Who should buy the 2024 G14?
- Buy it if you want one compact premium laptop for gaming, work, media and some creative use; value OLED quality and speakers; and accept fan noise when gaming.
- Target 32 GB RAM if you plan to keep it for years or use demanding creative, development or virtual-machine workloads.
- Prefer RTX 4060 for value when the price gap to the 4070 is substantial; choose RTX 4070 for the strongest graphics option in this chassis.
- Look elsewhere if you need replaceable RAM, maximum sustained gaming performance per dollar, quiet gaming, a matte outdoor-readable screen or more room for editing timelines.
ASUS’s product page does not establish a dependable current US street price, so value depends on the exact configuration and offer available where you shop. Verify that listing rather than treating a historical launch-era price as current.
