The May 7, 2025 leak did show an Xbox-branded ASUS handheld, but it was not a finished “ROG Ally 2” specification sheet. ASUS and Xbox later revealed the products as the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, launched worldwide on October 16, 2025. The leak correctly pointed to a collaboration, Xbox-focused controls and a more substantial Ally design, while several reported specifications—including 64GB of memory—did not describe the standard retail configuration.
What the May 2025 leak actually showed
FCC-related photographs and regulatory-listing material published on May 7 showed two apparent ASUS handheld variants. The black model carried a visible Xbox button and appeared to use larger, more controller-like grips. A white model looked closer to a conventional Windows/ROG version. The images resembled an updated ROG Ally X rather than a completely new industrial design.
The photographs also appeared to show two USB-C ports on the top edge and another opening that some coverage interpreted as HDMI. A photograph can establish that a port exists, but it cannot by itself confirm its function or the final retail specification. FCC prototypes may contain placeholder components, labels or configurations that change before launch. Tom’s Guide’s original report therefore remains useful as leak evidence, not as a definitive product sheet.
Why it looked like an Xbox handheld
The strongest clue was the dedicated Xbox button. Combined with the black colorway and earlier reporting about a Microsoft-and-ASUS initiative codenamed Project Kennan, it suggested Xbox software integration rather than an ordinary Ally refresh. The timing—just before the June 2025 Xbox Games Showcase—also proved significant.

However, the leak never proved that Microsoft was building a first-party Xbox console. It pointed to an ASUS-made Windows handheld developed with Xbox. That distinction matters: the released machines use PC hardware and Windows, not a closed Xbox operating system designed to run every Xbox console game locally.
Reported specifications: promising, but unconfirmed
The leak associated the higher-end black model with the following claims:

The white variant was reportedly linked to a lower-power, four-core AMD chip called “Aeirth Plus,” with a claimed 20W TDP. That name appears to have been an early or misspelled reference, so it should not be treated as a confirmed AMD product designation.

On June 8, 2025, ASUS and Xbox announced two products under the ROG Xbox Ally name rather than “ROG Ally 2.” ASUS announced an October 16 release, and both models became available worldwide on that date, subject to regional stock and configuration differences.

ASUS later described the ROG Xbox Ally as a genuine successor to the earlier Ally generation, although the retail branding did not use “ROG Ally 2.”
What Xbox integration changes in practice
The Xbox contribution is primarily software and interface design. The handhelds provide Xbox-focused navigation, quicker access to Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Gaming, and a more controller-friendly way to move through a Windows handheld environment. They still run Windows 11, so users retain access to PC storefronts and applications, including Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG.

That flexibility also creates the usual Windows-handheld compromises. Game Pass does not make every Xbox console game run locally. A title must have a compatible Windows PC version, support Xbox Play Anywhere, or be streamed through cloud gaming. Launchers, anti-cheat systems and individual game settings can affect compatibility.
The Xbox button therefore confirms branding and integration; it does not turn the device into a closed Xbox console. Microsoft’s Xbox announcement and the Windows Experience Blog describe that combined Windows-and-Xbox approach.
ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X?
Choose the standard ROG Xbox Ally if:
- You want the lower-cost entry to the Xbox-branded handheld family.
- You play a mix of PC games, Game Pass titles and cloud-streamed games.
- You value the Xbox interface but do not need maximum local performance.
Its compromises are lower performance than the Ally X and the continued complexity of Windows. At $599.99, it is still a substantial handheld-PC purchase, and game compatibility varies by title.

Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if:
- You want the fastest hardware, larger battery and premium controls in this family.
- You install large PC games and need the included 1TB SSD.
- You are comfortable paying $999.99 for enthusiast-level hardware.
The extra $400 is harder to justify for cloud-first, indie-focused or occasional players. Performance also depends on the selected power mode, cooling, game engine and resolution; higher wattage can increase heat, fan noise and battery drain.

- Game compatibility: Separate native Windows play, Play Anywhere support, cloud streaming and games blocked by launchers or anti-cheat.
- Power limits: Compare real handheld modes such as 15W or 25W, not only theoretical chip specifications. Plugged-in performance is not the same as battery performance.
- Battery: Capacity does not promise a fixed number of hours. Brightness, refresh rate, frame rate, game load and power mode all matter.
- Ergonomics: Grip shape, stick size, triggers, button placement and back buttons can matter more than a small cosmetic revision.
- Display: Check resolution, brightness, variable refresh support and response time. A 120Hz panel is useful for lighter games and interface smoothness, but it is not a guarantee of 120fps.
- Storage and expansion: Modern PC games can consume tens or hundreds of gigabytes. Confirm SSD replacement and card-expansion options for the exact model.
- Docking: Verify USB-C bandwidth, display output, charging requirements and accessory compatibility rather than inferring them from a photograph.
Does this show what a future first-party Xbox handheld might be?
Possibly as a design and software experiment, but not as proof of a Microsoft-made console. The ROG Xbox Ally demonstrates a direction Microsoft was willing to endorse: familiar Xbox controls, PC-based hardware, Windows, Game Pass and cloud access in a portable form.
It does not establish that Microsoft will release separate first-party hardware with a custom Xbox operating system, native Xbox Series compatibility or a closed-console experience. “Xbox handheld” can mean the ASUS products described here, a future Microsoft device, or any handheld that accesses Xbox services; those are not interchangeable claims.

Verdict
The leak was a meaningful preview, not a reliable final specification sheet. It correctly foreshadowed an Xbox-branded ASUS handheld with more substantial ergonomics and Xbox software, but the retail products arrived under new names and with materially different confirmed configurations. Use the official ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X specifications—and your actual game library, power and budget priorities—when deciding whether to buy. Existing ROG Ally owners should not upgrade solely for the Xbox button; the case rests on battery, ergonomics, performance and software convenience.
