Short answer: the Chromebook Perk offering Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and three months of Minecraft Realms was genuine, but it was a limited-time promotion from 2023. Contemporary coverage gave September 30, 2023, as the redemption deadline. It should not be treated as a current free Chromebook benefit in 2026.
What the original Chromebook Perk included
The promotion bundled two separate benefits:
- Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for Chromebook, redeemed through the Chromebook Perks system.
- Three months of Minecraft Realms, a promotional subscription rather than permanent access.
The offer was reported on July 25, 2023, with a stated redemption deadline of September 30, 2023. The report described the game as worth about $19.99 and Realms Plus as $7.99 per month at the time. Those are historical figures, not a current price promise. Contemporary promotion details
Minecraft becoming officially available on Chromebook was a separate announcement. Mojang’s release was for the Bedrock Edition through Google Play, with Marketplace access, Bedrock cross-play and Realms support. There is no evidence that the 2023 Minecraft Perk remains active. Because the reported September 30, 2023 deadline passed, a Chromebook bought in 2026 does not automatically include free Minecraft or free Realms.

You can still check for a newer, account-specific offer:
- Sign in to the Chromebook normally.
- Open the Explore app and choose Perks, or open the Chromebook Perks page.
- Read the live offer terms. If Minecraft is not listed, assume the old promotion is unavailable.
Google says Perks vary by device and account. Offers can be limited by hardware, previous redemption, region or administrator settings, so an old screenshot or retailer listing is not proof that your Chromebook qualifies. Google’s Chromebook Perks help

How redemption worked in 2023
The historical flow was performed from the Chromebook itself:
- Open Chromebook Perks or Explore → Perks.
- Find the Minecraft listing and select Get perk.
- Complete the Minecraft redemption using the Google or Microsoft account you intended to keep.
- Claim the Realms offer separately if it appeared as a second Perk.
This is a reconstruction of the original process, not a guarantee that the same menu exists today. Google’s general rules still say Perks require an internet connection, cannot be claimed in Guest or Incognito mode, and may be limited to one redemption per device or account. This was not Java Edition. Java and Bedrock use different multiplayer ecosystems, and claiming the Chromebook Perk did not make Minecraft free on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch or other platforms. Mojang also indicated that Chromebook pricing and Android ownership were handled through the Google Play account flow; do not assume an Android purchase automatically grants every Chromebook entitlement. What the Realms portion actually meant
Realms is a hosted, always-online Bedrock world. Friends can join without the owner keeping a Chromebook running, and Mojang manages the server infrastructure. The Perk’s Realms benefit lasted three months; it was not lifetime Realms access and did not make the game itself permanently free.

Mojang’s current Realms page lists:
- Realms: $3.99 per month for the host plus two other players.
- Realms Plus: $7.99 per month for the host plus up to 10 other players, with access to the included Marketplace catalog.
The standard current trial is 30 days where available and renews automatically unless canceled. The exact billing flow for the 2023 Chromebook Perk is not documented in the current support pages, so check the live terms before accepting any trial. When a promotional Realm ends, the paid hosted service and catalog access stop unless renewed. Preserve or download important worlds before cancellation rather than assuming an online Realm will remain available indefinitely.

Why a Chromebook might not show a Perk
- Expired promotion: the 2023 deadline has passed.
- Hardware eligibility: some devices built before an offer launched cannot receive it.
- Previous redemption: the offer may already be tied to the Chromebook or Google Account.
- Refurbished or repaired device: Google says these may not qualify.
- Managed Chromebook: a school or employer administrator may disable Perks.
- Account or regional restriction: availability is not universal.
- Compatibility: Minecraft may not appear in Google Play if the device does not meet current requirements.
Google’s troubleshooting documentation uses ChromeOS 86 or later for its general eligibility checks, but that is not a definitive model list for the old Minecraft promotion. Check Google’s current troubleshooting steps
Quick troubleshooting
- Leave Guest or Incognito mode and sign in to the Chromebook.
- Confirm that the device is online and updated.
- Temporarily disable extensions if the Perks page does not load.
- Retry later if the redemption service is unavailable.
- If the device is managed, ask the administrator whether consumer Perks are blocked.
- If you see “already redeemed,” another user may have claimed the offer or the account may have used it previously; Perks generally cannot be transferred.
Do not interpret a billing prompt as proof of permanent free Realms access. Review the renewal date and cancellation rules first.
What to do in 2026
- Check Explore → Perks for a live, separately documented offer.
- If Minecraft is absent, use the official Minecraft purchase page and verify Chromebook compatibility.
- Use the official 30-day Realms trial if Minecraft presents one to your account, and cancel before renewal if unwanted.
- Choose standard Realms for a small group or Realms Plus for up to 10 players and Marketplace content.
Bottom line
The “free Minecraft and Minecraft Realms Chromebook Perk” was a real 2023 promotion for Bedrock Edition plus three months of Realms. Its reported September 30, 2023 redemption deadline has passed. In 2026, check the live Perks page for a new offer, but do not expect a new Chromebook—or an old search result—to include the expired deal.
