To lower VALORANT ping, select the lowest-latency stable server, use Ethernet if possible, stop background downloads and uploads, and test without a VPN. If those steps do not help, identify whether the problem is jitter, packet loss, bufferbloat, an ISP route, or a Riot-side issue before buying new equipment or changing settings. There is no universal one-click fix: distance and routing set a floor that local tweaks cannot remove.
First, make sure it is actually ping
Ping is the round-trip time (RTT) for data to travel between your PC and the VALORANT server and back. It is not the same as jitter, packet loss, or local rendering delay:
- Jitter is variation in latency. A connection that swings from low to high ping can feel worse than one with a higher but steady reading.
- Packet loss means some data does not arrive reliably. It can cause stuttering or rubber-banding even when the displayed ping looks normal.
- Buffering or queueing delay can add delay when traffic builds up behind a busy connection, particularly during uploads.
- Frame time, FPS, and input/render latency are local PC or display delays. They can make aiming feel sluggish without raising network ping.
Riot’s explanations of gameplay consistency and network effects in gunfights distinguish network travel from input and rendering delay. They also describe how network buffering can trade responsiveness for smoother movement.
Enable VALORANT’s available network and performance statistics or graphs in the client settings, then watch network RTT, packet loss, RTT variation if shown, client FPS, frame time, and render or server indicators. Labels and options can change by client version. Read the pattern, not just one number:

As a rough player-facing guide—not an official Riot standard—under 30 ms is excellent for most players, 30–60 ms is generally very good, 60–100 ms is playable but can be noticeable in competitive fights, 100–150 ms is more likely to feel sluggish, and above 150 ms is usually poor for competitive play. Consistency, loss, server location, and frame performance all matter, so do not treat a threshold as a guarantee.
Try these free fixes first
- Choose the best available server. On the play or queue screen, open the available server list and compare its displayed latency. Choose the lowest stable option, not a one-time low reading that fluctuates or shows loss. The list and labels may differ by region or client version. A server farther away cannot be made nearby by a setting.
- Switch to Ethernet. Connect the PC directly to the router if practical. A cable often improves stability and reduces Wi-Fi-related loss or variation, though it may not change baseline RTT. If Wi-Fi is necessary, use a supported 5-GHz or 6-GHz band, move closer to the access point, reduce obstructions, and avoid a weak repeater. A wired mesh backhaul or access point may help where a direct cable is impractical.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop game downloads, cloud backups, video uploads, streams, screen sharing, and large transfers. Check other household devices too. Upload saturation is a common cause of latency spikes: game packets can wait behind a full upstream queue even on a fast download plan.
- Turn off VPNs and proxies while testing. Riot’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends trying VALORANT without them where possible. A VPN can change a poor ISP route, but it can also add hops, congestion, or a worse route.
- Check service status. Look at Riot’s status page, announcements, and reports from teammates in your region. A server-side incident will not be fixed by changing DNS or resetting your router.
- Restart the equipment. Exit VALORANT and the Riot Client, restart the router and modem or ONT, wait for the connection to return fully, then test the same server again. Restarting is low risk; a factory reset is not a routine ping fix and can erase network settings.
Isolate the cause before changing more
Record your usual and worst ping, packet-loss reading, the server selected, date and time, and whether the problem appears only at peak hours. Note whether other games or devices are affected. If practical, compare a wired connection with Wi-Fi, or test a phone hotspot briefly. A hotspot is only a diagnostic comparison: mobile latency and stability vary, and data limits may apply.

Repeat the same test at a different time. If ping jumps mainly when the household is online, suspect congestion or queueing. If it is high and stable on every connection, distance or routing is more likely. If a hotspot or alternate ISP gives a large, repeatable improvement to the same VALORANT server, that is useful evidence of a home-network or ISP-path issue—not proof that the alternate connection is a suitable permanent fix.
Fix Wi-Fi instability and upload queueing
For Wi-Fi, start with position and band: keep the PC near the router, use 5-GHz or 6-GHz when supported, and avoid walls, interference, and crowded repeaters. If possible, test Ethernet to determine whether the radio link is the cause. A newer or more expensive router is not automatically a solution.

If latency rises whenever anyone uses the connection, look for a router feature called SQM (smart queue management) or active queue management. Configure it using measured connection speeds, especially the upload rate, and follow the router maker’s instructions. Some devices offer generic “gaming QoS,” but its behavior varies; a poorly configured priority rule can make things worse. Router firmware updates may help stability, but do not assume they will lower the geographic or routing minimum.
Windows network refresh commands
For a basic refresh, open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsThese commands release and renew the local IP configuration and clear the DNS cache. They can help with certain connectivity or stale-resolution problems, but they do not guarantee lower in-match RTT. Restart the PC if needed, then test again.

DNS, firewall, and port forwarding: use them for the problem they solve
DNS translates service names into IP addresses. It usually does not affect the latency of game packets after a match connection is established. If name resolution or launcher connectivity is failing, Riot lists public DNS examples such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) and Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1) in its support guidance. Changing DNS may make no difference to in-match ping. If connectivity gets worse, restore automatic DNS in Windows or your router.

Check that Windows Security or other security software is not blocking the Riot Client, VALORANT, or Vanguard. Prefer application-specific firewall allowances; do not leave the firewall disabled. Port forwarding is an escalation step for a connection or NAT problem, not a routine latency tweak. If Riot Support recommends it, use Riot’s current support instructions rather than an old port list, since requirements can change.

Could Riot’s network buffering be making it feel slow?
Network buffering can smooth movement when a connection is inconsistent, but smoothing may add perceived delay. Less buffering can feel more responsive on a clean connection; too little on a jittery link can produce stutter. Test the available in-game options under your usual conditions and keep the setting that gives you the best combination of consistency and responsiveness. There is no universally best choice.
Riot describes its Riot Direct backbone and server locations as efforts to reduce routing delays, but a player’s location and the route between the ISP and Riot still matter. See Riot’s overview of VALORANT networking and its explanation of network paths and infrastructure. Neither a fast internet plan nor a local setting can erase physical distance.
When to suspect ISP routing—or a Riot issue
An ISP route is worth investigating if VALORANT ping suddenly becomes much higher than your normal, only one region or game is affected, or another provider consistently reaches the same server with much lower latency. Test at multiple times and with local traffic stopped. A high, steady reading is more suggestive of server distance or route than random Wi-Fi interference; spikes and loss point more strongly to instability or congestion.

Contact your ISP with evidence of packet loss or an abnormal route, and open a Riot Support ticket if the issue appears VALORANT-specific. An ISP may investigate congestion or equipment, but cannot promise to change a route that is working as designed.
Do gaming VPNs or route optimizers lower ping?
Sometimes a route-optimization service can help when the ISP’s path to Riot is unusually inefficient. It cannot fix weak Wi-Fi, a saturated upload, or packet loss inside your home, and it may make latency worse. Try one only after free fixes, and compare the same VALORANT server at similar times with identical local conditions—with and without the service. Keep it only if the improvement is repeatable and meaningful. A conventional VPN and a gaming route optimizer may route traffic differently, but neither is guaranteed to improve VALORANT. Riot’s default advice is to test without VPNs or proxies first.

- Changing graphics settings: Lower settings may improve FPS or frame time, not network RTT. They can help only if local rendering delay is being mistaken for lag.
- Port forwarding: It can address particular connectivity issues, but is not an automatic latency upgrade.
- DNS changes: They may help name resolution, not usually ongoing match latency.
- Registry edits or “TCP optimizer” tools: Undocumented changes can complicate troubleshooting without fixing the actual bottleneck. Avoid them as first-line fixes.
- Reinstalling the game: It is unlikely to help a network route, congestion, or Wi-Fi problem.
Quick decision guide
- High and steady on every server: Choose the nearest low-latency option, then investigate geography and ISP routing.
- Spikes when others use the internet: Stop competing traffic; if recurring, investigate SQM/queue management.
- Packet loss or rubber-banding: Test Ethernet, inspect cables and router/modem, then contact the ISP if loss persists.
- Only VALORANT is affected: Check Riot status, compare servers, review firewall rules, and send evidence to Riot Support.
- Only one server is affected: Prefer another stable server if available and report the route-specific issue.
- A VPN seems to help: Repeat a controlled same-server comparison before paying; it may be changing the route, but can also cause new issues.
