Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S can stream selected digitally owned games through Xbox Cloud Gaming, so you can play without installing them. It is not Remote Play: the game runs on Microsoft’s cloud servers, not on your own Xbox. You need an eligible game, a supported plan and region, and a compatible device; owning a game alone does not guarantee it can be streamed.
What “Stream your own game” means
Stream Your Own Game is Xbox Cloud Gaming for a selection of games you own digitally. The cloud service runs the game and sends its audio and video to your Xbox or another supported device. Your console does not need to install or run that game, which can save storage and time, but the experience depends on your internet connection.
It is distinct from three other ways to play:
- Stream Your Own Game: A supported game you own runs on Xbox Cloud Gaming servers.
- Remote Play: A game runs on your own Xbox and is streamed from that console to another device.
- Game Pass cloud gaming: You stream a title available through your plan’s catalog; you may not need to own it.
- Local installation: The game runs on your Xbox and uses its storage.
Xbox announced owned-game cloud streaming for browsers and other devices on November 20, 2024, then introduced a console Insider preview on December 11, 2024. The feature has since expanded across devices and games. Xbox reported more than 450 games in the collection on August 28, 2025; that dated figure is not a guarantee of the current catalog size. Xbox’s announcement, console preview details, and the August 2025 update document those milestones.
Which Xbox consoles and devices support it?
The console preview covered Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. That establishes support for those console families, but not identical access for every account: availability can depend on rollout, region, subscription, platform, and the title. Check your console’s Owned Games library for a cloud badge and the option to play with cloud gaming.

Xbox has also named browsers, PCs, phones, tablets, Samsung Smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, and Meta Quest Pro among destinations for Xbox Cloud Gaming. On July 15, 2025, Xbox announced an Insider preview of owned-game streaming in the Xbox PC app; that announcement described more than 250 games at the time, not today’s catalog. Device models, apps, account access, and regional availability can differ. See Xbox’s PC app announcement and its Xbox Cloud Gaming page for current access information.
What you need before you start
- A supported device and region. Cloud gaming is limited to selected regions and devices. Availability depends on your country, Xbox account region, plan, platform, and the game’s current cloud rights.
- A plan that includes cloud gaming. The original announcements specified Game Pass Ultimate. Microsoft’s current U.S. Game Pass page lists cloud gaming on selected plans, including Essential, Premium, and Ultimate, but the feature and catalog vary by plan and region. Confirm that your own plan includes the cloud access you need rather than relying on older Ultimate-only guidance. Check the current U.S. Game Pass plan information; other regions may show different terms.
- An eligible digital Xbox purchase. The game must be supported for cloud streaming, and the account must hold the qualifying Xbox entitlement. A disc, a purchase on another storefront, or a different game edition may not qualify.
- A compatible controller or input method. Xbox named the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, PlayStation DualSense, and DualShock 4 in its launch information. Compatibility also depends on the device, operating system, connection method, and game. Some PC games may support mouse and keyboard. TVs and headsets require a compatible Bluetooth-enabled wireless controller.
- A stable internet connection. Cloud play needs a reliable connection. Xbox’s requirements and available performance can vary; do not assume that a high download speed alone will prevent delay or interruptions.
Xbox’s service terms and supported options change over time. Its Game Pass page says availability varies by plan, region, platform, and time. No current subscription price is included here because the official page information available for this article did not provide a verifiable figure.

On a browser-supported device, Xbox’s documented route is to open xbox.com/play, sign in with the account that has the required plan, open the Stream Your Own Game collection, and select a supported title. Connect a compatible controller before launching. PCs may also offer access through the Xbox PC app, depending on current app, account, and regional availability. On a TV, Fire TV device, or Quest headset, use the supported Xbox app or cloud-gaming route for that specific device; do not assume every model or country is supported.

Xbox’s original announcement named Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari among supported browsers, and identified Xbox Wireless and Adaptive Controllers, DualSense, and DualShock 4 as controller options. Browser and controller compatibility can change, so consult Xbox’s cloud gaming support page when a device or input method is not recognized.
Stream Your Own Game vs. Remote Play
| Question | Stream Your Own Game | Remote Play |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | Xbox Cloud Gaming servers. | Your own Xbox console. |
| Must your console be available? | No, for a cloud-supported title and device. | Yes; the console must be configured for remote access and connected. |
| Which games can you play? | Only titles currently supported for owned-game cloud streaming, with qualifying digital ownership. | Your console’s installed library, subject to Remote Play compatibility. |
| Does the game use console storage? | No local installation is needed to stream. | The game must be installed on the console. |
| When is it useful? | To avoid a download, save console storage, or play a supported title on another device. | To access your own installed library, including games that are not in the cloud-streaming collection. |
For setup instructions, see Xbox’s Remote Play setup guide. Remote Play is also the more relevant option when you own a physical disc or want a game that is absent from the owned-game cloud collection, provided it is installed and compatible with Remote Play.

Why a game you own may not show a cloud option
The deciding factor is not whether a game is sold on Xbox or appears as owned in your library. It must also be in the current cloud-playable collection, and the edition and license must be eligible. A game can be downloadable but not streamable; a game included with Game Pass, a game you can buy and stream, and a game you own are not necessarily the same thing. Xbox’s current Game Pass information warns that game availability varies over time and by region, plan, and platform.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Disc ownership may not provide the digital license cloud streaming needs.
- A purchase from Steam, Epic, PlayStation, Nintendo, or another storefront does not become an Xbox console entitlement.
- Deluxe, remastered, cross-generation, or other editions may not match the supported cloud version.
- Licensing or technical changes can remove a game from the collection, and add-ons or expansions may not be available through the streamed edition.
If the cloud option is missing, verify the account and plan first, then check the game’s current cloud eligibility and your region. Updating and restarting the console or app can refresh its library view, but it cannot make an unsupported title eligible. You can also check the cloud catalog through Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Performance: when streaming is a good trade-off
Streaming shifts the work from your console to a remote service. Network stability, Wi-Fi interference and congestion, the route to the cloud service, server load, and controller connection can all affect responsiveness and image quality. A wired Ethernet connection is a sensible choice for a console or TV where practical; on Wi-Fi, reducing congestion and avoiding a crowded 2.4 GHz network may help. A wired controller can remove one wireless link on setups that support it, but it cannot remove internet latency.
Cloud play is most attractive when avoiding a large download or saving storage matters more than the lowest possible input delay. A local installation is generally the better fit for offline play, unreliable internet, maximum responsiveness, or latency-sensitive competitive games. If a stream stutters, try Ethernet, pause other network-heavy activity, restart the device, and reconnect the controller. Faster internet alone is not a guaranteed fix.
Is it worth paying for cloud access or buying hardware?
Consider the feature a convenience, not a replacement for your whole Xbox library. It can be especially useful when storage is tight, a long download would delay a short session, or you already own a supported device and want to play there. Before paying for a higher Game Pass tier, check the current plan page for the least expensive plan that includes the cloud feature and title access you actually need.
You do not need to buy a new controller if a compatible one you own already works with your device. Likewise, a supported TV, Fire TV device, or Quest headset can be a useful destination if you already have one, but buying hardware solely for this feature does not remove its catalog, region, or connection limits. For setup and device eligibility, start with Xbox’s cloud gaming information.
