For most PC players, the best fit for GTA 5 is a 27-inch, 1440p fast-IPS monitor with a 144–180Hz refresh rate and variable refresh rate (VRR). It gives Los Santos a sharper look than 1080p without demanding as much from your graphics card as 4K. For PS5 or Xbox Series X, prioritize a 4K monitor with HDMI 2.1 and 120Hz support; for a high-end PC, a 32-inch 4K OLED is the premium image-quality choice. The right pick depends on your platform and hardware—not just the biggest resolution or refresh-rate number.
Quick recommendations
| Who it suits | What to look for | Why | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most PC players | 27-inch, 1440p, 144–180Hz fast IPS, VRR | Balances detail, smooth motion and performance demands. | Ordinary IPS contrast and HDR may be modest. |
| PC with a high-end GPU | 32-inch, 4K OLED, 165Hz or higher | Fine detail, deep blacks and fast pixel response suit night driving and reflections. | Costs more; consider burn-in precautions and warranty. |
| PS5 or Xbox Series X | 27–32-inch 4K, 120Hz, HDMI 2.1, VRR | Provides 4K output and useful headroom for supported 120Hz games. | GTA 5 on these consoles is not a 120fps game. |
| Xbox Series S | 27-inch 1440p, 120Hz, VRR | A proportionate match for the console’s output capabilities. | Check the exact HDR and VRR combinations supported. |
| Budget or older PC | 24-inch, 1080p, 144–180Hz IPS | Easier to drive while still offering smoother motion than 60Hz. | Less fine detail and screen space than 1440p. |
| PC-only immersive setup | 34-inch ultrawide, 1440p or higher | Gives a wider presentation, supported by GTAV Enhanced on PC. | PS5 and Xbox do not support native ultrawide output. |
These are monitor categories, not claims that one exact model is best in every region or at every price. If comparing named options, consider models such as the Dell G2724D or a suitable LG UltraGear 27-inch 1440p model for mainstream PC use; verify the precise model, ports and current price before buying. Value options such as the KTC M27T6S merit extra checks on warranty and support. For premium PC play, compare exact 32-inch 4K OLED models from MSI, ASUS ROG and Alienware. Model suffixes, availability, features and prices can differ.
Choose for your platform first
PC: check whether you play Enhanced or Legacy
Rockstar offers GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy as separate PC versions, with separate multiplayer instances. Enhanced adds features including ray-traced effects, DLSS and FSR support, and higher resolutions, aspect ratios and frame rates where hardware supports them. That makes resolution, contrast and VRR more relevant to the PC experience, but it does not mean every system can run demanding settings smoothly.
Recommended Free Tools
Rockstar lists an RTX 3060 or Radeon RX 6600 XT in Enhanced’s recommended PC specification. That is a system requirement, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate at 1440p or 4K, especially with ray tracing enabled. Check the official PC requirements and match the monitor to your own GPU and settings target. For most midrange systems, 1440p is a more sensible starting point than buying 4K and then routinely lowering settings or relying on aggressive upscaling.
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Rockstar describes the current-generation console versions as offering graphics modes up to 4K and up to 60fps, with HDR and ray-tracing options. In other words, a 120Hz display can be useful for other supported games and provides display headroom, but it will not make GTA 5 on these consoles run at 120fps. A 240Hz monitor is even less useful for this title alone. See Rockstar’s console feature announcement.
For PS5 or Series X, 4K with HDMI 2.1 is the safer target if you want 4K/120Hz output in games that support it. Confirm that the particular monitor supports the desired resolution, refresh rate, VRR and HDR together over its HDMI input; the HDMI 2.1 label alone does not guarantee every combination. The PS5 can also output 1440p, and its video-output settings let you test supported resolution, HDR, 120Hz output and VRR. Series S users will usually get better value from a capable 1440p/120Hz VRR display than from paying extra for premium 4K/240Hz features.

Resolution, size and refresh rate
- 1080p: Best for a budget PC, an older GPU or a small desk. A 24-inch panel is a sensible pairing. Choose 144Hz or higher if your system can produce higher frame rates.
- 1440p: The default recommendation for most PC players. At 27 inches it provides a clear step up in detail from 1080p without the same GPU load as 4K. It is also a strong match for an RTX 3060/RX 6600 XT-class system, though actual performance depends on settings.
- 4K: Best when image detail is the priority and the GPU can handle it, or for console buyers who want a 4K display. A 32-inch screen makes this resolution more comfortable to appreciate. On a midrange PC, 4K may mean reduced settings, upscaling or lower frame rates.
- Ultrawide: A compelling PC choice for broader scenery and immersion, particularly with Enhanced’s higher-aspect-ratio support. It is not a native-format choice for consoles.
For GTA 5, 120–144Hz already feels substantially smoother than 60Hz when the system can deliver the frames. A 165–180Hz monitor is a useful PC target; 240Hz is mainly worthwhile if you also play high-frame-rate games or want headroom for other uses. A monitor cannot create frames your PC or console does not render. Stable frame pacing and VRR are often more valuable than chasing the highest advertised refresh rate.

Panel types: what matters in Los Santos
- Fast IPS: The safest all-round choice for motion handling, viewing angles and price. Contrast and HDR performance vary, and many value models are not especially bright in HDR.
- VA: Often has stronger native contrast than IPS, which can help with dark scenes. Response behavior varies; some models show visible smearing in dark transitions, so check independent measurements rather than the panel label.
- OLED: Excellent blacks, contrast and pixel response make night scenes, neon, reflections and explosions stand out. It is a premium preference, not a requirement. Static desktop use and repeated HUD elements are reasons to review the model’s burn-in mitigation and warranty. Burn-in is a risk, not an inevitability. Text clarity and full-screen brightness also vary by model.
- Mini-LED: Local dimming can deliver brighter HDR than many ordinary IPS displays without OLED’s same usage concerns. Depending on the display and scene, local-dimming halos or uneven tuning may be visible.
Judge the display by measured response times, input lag, contrast, brightness, VRR behavior and the quality of its local dimming—not by a manufacturer’s “1ms” claim or the word “HDR” alone. HDR-compatible means a monitor accepts an HDR signal; it does not guarantee convincing brightness or black levels. OLED can have outstanding blacks but limited full-screen brightness, while Mini-LED can be brighter but may show blooming. HDR results also depend on the game version, GPU, operating system, connection, display mode and monitor firmware.
Set up the display for smooth play
On PC
- Connect through DisplayPort when that is the appropriate input for the monitor’s native resolution and top refresh rate; check the monitor’s manual for any resolution or bandwidth limits.
- In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and select the highest stable refresh rate available for the display.
- Enable Adaptive Sync/FreeSync in the monitor’s on-screen menu and VRR in your GPU control panel, where supported. Check the supported input and refresh range.
- Start GTA V at the monitor’s native resolution. If Enhanced’s ray tracing or high settings cause frame-rate drops, test DLSS or FSR and adjust ray-traced reflections, shadows, ambient occlusion and global illumination individually. Prefer steady frame delivery over unstable peaks.
- If needed for consistent VRR operation, cap the frame rate slightly below the monitor’s maximum refresh rate. The appropriate cap depends on the display and setup; it is not a universal magic number.
- Enable HDR only after checking both the game and operating-system configuration. If the picture looks dim, washed out or inaccurate, compare SDR and revisit HDR calibration rather than assuming the badge guarantees a better image.
On PS5 or Xbox
On PS5, use Settings → Screen and Video → Video Output to review resolution, HDR, 120Hz output and VRR. If a display mode fails, test 1440p output and toggle 120Hz or VRR individually to isolate the compatibility issue. For Xbox, check TV & display options to confirm the reported resolution, refresh rate, HDR and VRR. Xbox HDR behavior can differ at 1080p and 1440p compared with 4K, so verify the actual combination the console offers on your monitor.

Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Buying 4K for a midrange PC without checking the performance trade-off: A sharper screen can mean lower settings or less consistent performance. Choose 1440p if that better matches your GPU.
- Paying for 240Hz just for console GTA 5: The game’s console modes top out at 60fps according to Rockstar. Put the budget toward a suitable resolution, HDMI 2.1, VRR, screen size or better HDR instead.
- Trusting “1ms” as a complete motion test: Advertised response time may describe an ideal setting that causes inverse ghosting. Look for independent response-time and input-lag measurements.
- Assuming every HDR monitor looks good: Check brightness, black level, certification and dimming behavior; basic HDR acceptance alone says little about image impact.
- Buying ultrawide for a console: Consoles do not provide native ultrawide output, so the result may have black bars or scaling.
- Ignoring OLED ownership and warranty details: If you also work on the display with static windows for long stretches, compare mitigation features, warranty language and the monitor’s suitability for that use.
- Mixing up Enhanced and Legacy: Check which PC version you and your friends use before assuming the newer feature set or multiplayer compatibility applies.
For independent comparisons, consult testing specific to 1440p monitors, Xbox Series X displays and console input compatibility. Prices and model names change frequently; compare the exact suffix, ports, warranty and local price before purchase.
