To update a PS3 normally, open Settings > System Update > Update via Internet and follow the prompts. Sony’s support page listed system software version 4.93 when checked on August 18, 2026; Sony describes it as a performance improvement and requires at least 200 MB of free space for the update. If the console cannot update online, use Sony’s official update file on a FAT32 USB drive.
What a PS3 system-software update does
System software is the PS3’s firmware, not a patch for an individual game. It supports the console’s features and usability, and can affect security, PlayStation account behavior, game and service access, and Blu-ray playback. Sony says the PS3 needs a renewed Blu-ray-player encryption key and recommends installing the latest system software for Blu-ray playback. An update may be relevant if playback fails, but it cannot resolve every possible disc, region, or drive problem.

Sony’s PS3 system-software page listed version 4.93 when checked on August 18, 2026. Sony’s version-specific description says it improves system performance; it does not describe a particular new feature. The page specifies at least 200 MB of free space on the PS3 hard drive for an internet update, or on removable media for an update prepared on a computer. Check the installed version first
- On the XMB, open Settings.
- Select System Settings.
- Select System Information.
- Read the value next to System Software.
This menu path is documented in Sony PS3 documentation. If the console already shows the version currently listed by Sony, it does not need a newer update unless Sony has since posted one.

Update through the internet
Before starting
- Connect the PS3 to the internet; use a wired Ethernet connection if Wi-Fi is unreliable. Ethernet is a practical option, not a Sony requirement.
- Ensure the PS3 hard drive has at least 200 MB free.
- Use stable power. Do not start if you expect to have to unplug or switch off the console.
Steps
- From the XMB, select Settings > System Update.
- Select Update via Internet.
- Let the PS3 download the update, accept the on-screen prompts, and allow the console to restart if prompted.
- Leave the console powered on until installation finishes. Then check the version again under Settings > System Settings > System Information.
Sony says the latest update is downloaded directly to the console and completed by following the on-screen instructions. If the network update repeatedly fails or the console cannot reach the update service, try the USB method instead. Sony’s update instructions
Update with a FAT32 USB drive
Use the USB route if the PS3 is offline, its network connection is unreliable, or internet updates keep failing. You will need a computer to format the drive and download Sony’s official update file.

Prepare the USB drive
- Format the drive as FAT32. Sony specifies FAT32 for this method; it does not guarantee every drive model or capacity.
- Create a folder named
PS3at the root of the USB drive. - Inside it, create a folder named
UPDATE. - Download the update using Sony’s PS3 system software page, which links to the official PS3 update download. Save the file inside
PS3/UPDATE/with the exact filenamePS3UPDAT.PUP. - Safely eject the drive from the computer.

Install from the USB drive
- Insert the prepared drive into the PS3.
- From the XMB, select Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media.
- Follow the prompts and leave the console powered on until the installation completes.
- Check Settings > System Settings > System Information to confirm the installed version.
If the PS3 does not detect the update
Sony specifies FAT32, the folder names, and the filename; the checks below are practical ways to verify those requirements, not a diagnosis for every error.
- Confirm the drive is FAT32, not NTFS or exFAT.
- Confirm the exact path is
/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP, with the folders capitalized and no extra enclosing folder. - Check that the file is not accidentally named
PS3UPDAT.PUP.PUPand is not still inside a downloaded archive. - Make sure the download completed. If uncertain, download the official file again from Sony.
- Try another USB port or drive, and remove unrelated files from the drive while troubleshooting.
- If the XMB will not load or the update still cannot be installed, use Safe Mode rather than choosing a destructive recovery option at random.
Use Safe Mode if an update failed or the PS3 will not boot
Sony identifies Safe Mode as a recovery option when the XMB does not appear, file-system or database repair fails or becomes stuck, or a system-software update does not complete normally. Safe Mode updates must use storage media; a network update is not available there. Sony’s Safe Mode instructions are on its PS3 Safe Mode page.

Enter Safe Mode on CECH-2000, CECH-3000, and CECH-4000 series
- Make sure the PS3 is off and its power indicator is red.
- Press and hold the power button. Keep holding after the first beep. When a second beep sounds about 10 seconds later and the console shuts down, release the button.
- Press and hold the power button again. Keep holding after the first beep and release it after the double beep.
- Connect the controller to the PS3 with a USB cable and press the PS button when prompted.
- Select System Software Update and use the prepared USB drive.
Older models with a rear main-power switch
For older systems with a rear main-power switch, Sony’s instructions include switching off that rear switch first, then switching it back on before repeating the power-button sequence. Safe Mode procedures vary by model family, so check Sony’s model-specific instructions rather than assuming the same sequence applies to every PS3.
Choose Safe Mode options carefully
Select System Software Update when the goal is to install firmware. Other Safe Mode choices are separate recovery actions, not routine update steps. Sony warns that restoring the file system may result in data loss if damaged data cannot be recovered. Rebuilding the database can remove or alter some message, playlist, edited-photo, video-thumbnail, or video-history information; initialization performs the PS3 initialization process. Do not select Initialize PS3 casually.

When to reinstall instead of update
Reinstallation is a more serious recovery route, not the normal way to install a current update. Sony identifies it as a possible step after initialization or when ordinary updating cannot restore the system. If the console still starts enough to allow a backup, back up important data before initialization, file-system repair, database operations, or reinstallation; this is a prudent precaution for recovery work.
- Prepare a FAT32 USB drive with
PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP, using the official file from Sony. - Connect the drive to the PS3 and follow the on-screen reinstallation instructions. If the XMB is unavailable, use Safe Mode and choose the system-software option as directed.
Sony provides the separate reinstallation instructions. Do not treat initialization as harmless or assume reinstalling is necessary for an ordinary update.

Protect the console during installation
- Do not unplug the console or turn it off while update data is being installed.
- If the display appears to pause, give the console time instead of immediately cutting power.
- Use only the official update file and Sony’s documented methods. Sony warns that update data from other sources or methods can cause problems, and that modified systems may fail to install official update data or operate properly.
- If an update does fail, try the official USB method; if the XMB will not load, use Safe Mode. Avoid jumping straight to initialization.
Account and service changes to expect
Installing the latest software does not restore every older PS3 online feature. Sony’s version history says that beginning with version 4.89, signing in to PlayStation requires a device password for enhanced account protection.
