This guide covers the original wired HTC Vive, with compatibility notes for Vive Pro, Vive Pro 2, and Cosmos Elite. The basic sequence is to install Steam and SteamVR, connect the headset through its link box, configure compatible base stations and controllers, then run SteamVR Room Setup. Vive Focus and other standalone Vive headsets use a different setup path.
Identify your Vive model and tracking hardware
“Vive” covers several different systems. Check the headset label and included accessories before connecting anything: cables, link boxes, controllers, and base stations are not universally interchangeable.
| Headset | Tracking setup | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Original HTC Vive | External Base Station 1.0 tracking | Uses the original Vive link box and controllers. Base Station 2.0 is not a compatible substitute. |
| Vive Pro / Pro Eye / Pro 2 | Compatible Base Station 1.0 or 2.0 hardware | Confirm controller and station compatibility for the exact setup. |
| Vive Cosmos Elite | External lighthouse tracking | Requires the external-tracking faceplate. |
| Vive Focus or other standalone Vive models | Model-specific standalone setup | These are not configured using the original wired Vive procedure below. |
HTC says Base Station 1.0 and 2.0 cannot be combined in one play area. Its base-station compatibility guidance lists the original Vive with Base Station 1.0.

SteamVR’s published minimum baseline is Windows 10 or later, an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better, 4 GB RAM, a GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290 equivalent or better, broadband internet, a USB 2.0-or-newer port, and HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort 1.2 or newer. The listing names GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 480-class graphics as its recommended level. These are SteamVR listing requirements, not a promise that newer VR games will run smoothly; check each game’s requirements. SteamVR store listing

HTC’s original Vive specification guide lists a GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 480 equivalent or better and HDMI, USB, power, and headset connections. Its figures are historical guidance for the original Vive, not a current-game performance guarantee. HTC Vive specifications
- Connect the link box’s video cable to a port on the graphics card, not a motherboard video output.
- For initial setup, use a direct USB connection instead of an unpowered hub.
- Laptop owners should verify that the video output is routed to the discrete GPU and supports the required video mode. USB-C video works only when the port and laptop support compatible DisplayPort output and GPU routing.
- Check that the headset, link box, correct power adapter, video and USB cables, base stations, and controllers are present and in working condition.
Clear and secure the play area
Move furniture, fragile objects, pets, and trip hazards out of the intended space. Leave overhead clearance for controller movement, secure base stations rather than balancing them on unstable furniture, and route the headset cable away from walking paths. Wear controller wrist straps. HTC warns against tracing a boundary through furniture or occupied areas because it creates a trip hazard. HTC room-scale setup guidance
HTC lists an original Vive room-scale minimum of approximately 2 m by 1.5 m (6 ft 6 in by 4 ft 11 in). A seated or standing setup can use less space, but the specific game and safe controller movement still determine what is practical.
Install Steam and SteamVR
- Install the Steam client from Valve’s Steam download page, then sign in or create an account.
- In Steam, find SteamVR and install it.
- Do not start a VR game yet. Connect the hardware, pair the controllers, and complete Room Setup first.
Steam is the storefront and game library; SteamVR is Valve’s PC VR runtime for compatible headsets, tracking, controllers, boundaries, and the VR dashboard. SteamVR supports HTC Vive and other compatible PC headsets. HTC’s VIVE software or VIVEPORT may be relevant to particular products, but SteamVR is the runtime used here to launch SteamVR-compatible Steam games.

Connect the original Vive through its link box
Use the original Vive’s link box and cables; do not assume a link box made for another Vive generation is interchangeable. The chain is:
PC graphics-card video output + PC USB port + link-box power → link box → headset cable → Vive headset
- Connect the headset cable to the headset, then connect its other end to the headset-side port on the link box.
- Connect the link box’s PC-side USB cable to the computer.
- Connect the link box’s HDMI or DisplayPort cable to a compatible output on the graphics card.
- Connect the link box power adapter and turn on the PC. Give Windows time to detect the devices.
Check the labels on the link box rather than guessing which ports face the PC and headset. If the display is blank, close SteamVR, disconnect the headset cable from the link box, restart the PC, reconnect the cable, and relaunch SteamVR. This is a general recovery sequence described in HTC’s Cosmos guide, not a model-specific guarantee for the original Vive.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPosition and configure the base stations
Original Vive with Base Station 1.0
- Place stations at opposing ends or in opposite corners of the play area, above head height, angled down toward the space.
- Keep the play area in their view and, for wireless synchronization, ensure the stations can see each other.
- Connect power to both stations. Set one to channel b and the other to c for the standard wireless-sync arrangement.
- Check that their status lights are solid green.
Steam Support recommends mounting stations at least 6.5 feet high, angling them down about 30–45 degrees, and keeping them no more than 5 m (16 ft) apart. Steam Support base-station troubleshooting

If obstacles prevent wireless synchronization, a sync cable may be needed. HTC’s original Vive guide describes wired synchronization using the cable and channels A and b. That is a separate arrangement from wireless b/c; follow the instructions for the stations and cable you have rather than combining the channel settings. HTC Vive user guide
Later Vive models and Base Station 2.0
Base Station 2.0 uses a different synchronization method and is for compatible later hardware, including supported Vive Pro models, Vive Pro 2, and Cosmos Elite. It is not an original Vive replacement, and 1.0 and 2.0 stations cannot be mixed in one play area. Check HTC’s compatibility table before buying or connecting replacement tracking hardware.
Turn on and pair the controllers
- Charge both controllers and press each system button to turn it on.
- Open SteamVR. In its device menu or console, right-click the controller icon and choose Pair Controller, then follow the prompts for each controller.
Steam Support documents pairing from the SteamVR console by turning on a controller, right-clicking its icon, and selecting Pair controller. The original Vive headset has two wireless receivers for its controllers. Steam Support controller pairing

If pairing fails: reset SteamVR USB devices
- Quit SteamVR and unplug all link-box cables from the computer.
- Open SteamVR Settings > Developer. Reveal Developer Settings if the option is hidden.
- Select Remove all SteamVR USB Devices. Keep the link box’s USB cable disconnected while confirming.
- Quit SteamVR, reconnect the link box’s USB, video, and power cables, then relaunch SteamVR.
Steam Support documents this USB reset procedure. Afterward, try pairing again with the controllers charged and close to the headset.

Run Room Setup
When SteamVR detects the headset and controllers, open the SteamVR menu and choose Room Setup or Run Room Setup; the wording varies by SteamVR version. HTC’s current instructions use SteamVR > Room Setup > Room-scale. HTC room-scale instructions
Room-scale
- Choose Room-scale.
- Follow the floor-calibration prompt so SteamVR knows the floor height.
- Set the center as prompted, then trace the boundary from inside the cleared play area.
- Review the boundary and complete calibration. Do not include furniture or areas where people may walk.
Standing Only
Choose Standing Only for a seated or stationary game, or when there is not enough safe space to walk. HTC’s guide does not set a fixed minimum for seated or standing experiences, but individual games may need room for arm movement or other clearance. HTC Vive PRE user guide
Run Room Setup again if you move rooms, relocate or re-angle stations, get an incorrect floor height, or find the boundary offset. HTC’s user guide notes that changes to room or station angles can require setup again. HTC Vive user guide
Verify tracking before launching a game
- In the SteamVR status window, check that the headset, both base stations, and both controllers are detected.
- Move the headset and controllers gently and confirm that their positions update without repeated loss.
- Check that the boundary appears where expected and that the floor height is sensible.
- Open SteamVR Home or the dashboard and test controller input before launching a title.
- Start with a lightweight SteamVR game, then adjust graphics settings if needed.
Troubleshoot by symptom
SteamVR does not detect the headset
- Check link-box power and reseat the USB and video cables, including the headset cable at both ends.
- Verify that video is connected to the graphics card and that Windows detects the USB device.
- Quit SteamVR, reconnect the link box, restart the PC, and try a different direct USB port.
- If the issue persists, use the SteamVR USB-device reset procedure above.
The headset is detected but its display is black
- Close SteamVR and restart the PC.
- Reseat the headset cable and link-box video cable.
- Try another compatible graphics-card output and check for a GPU driver or power issue.
- Avoid assuming an adapter will work without checking the headset model and graphics output.
A base station is missing or gray
- Check that it is powered and its status light is solid green.
- Remove obstructions, raise the stations, and aim them at the play area.
- Confirm matching station generations and the correct channel arrangement for wireless or wired synchronization.
- Check SteamVR messages and whether a firmware update is pending.
For advanced diagnosis, Steam Support suggests testing stations individually in A mode and checking whether the headset tracks while facing each one. Restore the normal channel configuration afterward. If a station appears to have a missing laser, Steam Support says replacement through HTC may be required. - Find your sweet spot-minimize eye fatigue with the IPD adjustment dial. Interpupillary distance (ipd)-the distance measured in mm between the centers of eye pupils
Tracking jumps, drifts, or disappears
- Cover or remove mirrors and other reflective surfaces.
- Check for furniture, curtains, or other objects blocking the headset’s view of the stations.
- Raise and re-angle stations, then verify their status lights and SteamVR messages.
- Confirm station generations match, and check cables and USB connections.
- Run Room Setup again if the physical layout changed. If the problem remains, test each station individually as described above.
Controllers will not pair
- Charge and restart each controller, then pair it again from SteamVR.
- Move it close to the headset and test the controllers one at a time.
- Restart SteamVR or the PC, then reset SteamVR USB devices if needed.
- Use pairing steps for the original Vive controllers, not instructions for Cosmos or standalone controllers.
The floor or boundary is wrong
Run Room Setup again, recalibrate the floor, and trace the boundary from the intended center of the cleared space. If you moved the stations or changed rooms, rebuild the setup rather than trying to work around the old boundary.
SteamVR opens but a game does not
- Confirm the title supports SteamVR and is installed on the signed-in Steam account.
- Start SteamVR and make sure the headset is detected before launching the title.
- Check the game’s own hardware requirements and runtime settings; meeting SteamVR’s baseline does not guarantee acceptable performance in every game.
Check used hardware before buying parts
If you are setting up a second-hand original Vive, test the complete kit before purchasing replacements:
- Confirm that the headset displays an image and inspect its lenses for scratches or haze.
- Check both Base Station 1.0 units for power and solid green lights, and test tracking across the room.
- Test every controller button and trackpad; inspect the headset cable for kinks or intermittent connection.
- Verify that the correct link box, power adapter, and cables are included.
- Match replacement parts to the headset and tracking generation. In particular, Base Station 2.0 is not a substitute for an original Vive’s Base Station 1.0.
A single failed original controller or station may be a limited repair if the rest of the kit works. If several essential parts are missing, compare the total cost of compatible replacements with the cost of a complete used kit; current availability and used-market prices vary.
