No—there is no official PS5 setting for choosing a custom color for the console’s built-in light. You can adjust its brightness, while its blue, white, and orange illumination indicates the console’s status. For a colored glow, use separate ambient lighting; it will not change the PS5’s own indicator.
Adjust the PS5 indicator’s brightness
If the light is too bright, the supported adjustment is brightness, not color:
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System, then Beep and Light.
- Choose Brightness.
- Select Dim, Medium, or Bright.
PlayStation’s support instructions document these brightness choices. The Beep and Light menu also includes the console beep-volume control; it does not offer a color picker, RGB wheel, or lighting effects. Dim is the official low-light option—the documented control does not promise that you can turn the indicator completely off while the console is running. Changing brightness does not alter the indicator’s status colors or affect your TV picture, HDR, or controller lighting.
What the PS5 light colors mean
The console indicator communicates power state and can help identify a problem. It is not a set of decorative color presets.

Does the PS5 have RGB lighting?
The console displays more than one status color, but that does not give you user control over an RGB spectrum. Sony’s documented setting exposes brightness choices, while the indicator follows predefined status behavior. This applies as a practical starting point to PS5 family owners, including Slim and Pro: there is no documented native color selector in the cited setting. Menu wording can change with system software, so check your current console if a label differs.

Console light or DualSense light?
The light on the PS5 itself and the light around the DualSense controller’s touchpad are separate. The controller’s player indicators and lighting may be influenced by a game, platform software, or an accessory. They are not controlled by the console’s Beep and Light brightness setting, and there is no universal promise that every controller setup allows arbitrary color selection.

Ways to add a custom-colored glow
If you want red, purple, or animated lighting around your setup, add light around the console rather than trying to reprogram its status indicator:

- RGB strip behind the TV or desk: Creates ambient color without attaching anything to the console. Consider cable routing, power, and brightness.
- RGB stand: Some stands combine lighting with charging, storage, or fans. Check compatibility with your exact model—original PS5, Slim, or Pro—and whether the lighting uses presets, a controller, or an app. A stand’s lights remain separate from the console indicator; vendor cooling claims are not a guarantee of improved performance.
- Colored console covers: PlayStation sells replacement covers in colors such as Midnight Black, Chroma Pearl, Volcanic Red, and others, subject to model compatibility and availability. These change the shell’s appearance, not the light’s emitted color. Check PlayStation Direct’s cover listings for the model you own.
External lighting is reversible and avoids opening the console. Keep strips and accessory cables clear of vents, and check how an accessory is powered so you know whether it uses a console USB port or a separate adapter.
Should you modify the console’s internal light?
For most owners, no. There is no official Sony procedure for converting the built-in status indicator into user-controlled RGB lighting. Opening the console or altering internal components can damage it, complicate warranty or repair service, introduce electrical or fitment problems, and interfere with a light that helps communicate status. Without model-specific service documentation and suitable electronics experience, an external light strip is the safer way to add color.

If the light looks abnormal
A light that stays blue, flashes unexpectedly, or appears alongside a shutdown should be treated as a possible troubleshooting issue—not as a hidden customization mode. Check the exact behavior against PlayStation’s PS5 support hub. Avoid repeated power cycling if the console appears to be in the middle of starting or shutting down; follow the relevant support steps for the symptom.
