Yes. Steam Link and Steam Remote Play support controller input. For a Steam Link session, connect the controller to the device receiving the stream—such as your phone, TV, or second PC—then launch the game. Compatibility depends on the controller, client device, connection method, and game.
How controller input works in Steam streaming
The PC running the game is the host; the device displaying it is the client. Steam sends the game’s video and audio to the client and returns the controller input to the host. Steam’s Remote Play overview describes this setup and its supported destinations.
In a Steam Link session, the simplest arrangement is to connect the controller to the client device. A controller plugged into the host may work in some setups, but it can make it harder to tell where input is being received. Test with the controller connected to the device displaying the stream.

Steam Link app
Use Steam Link to stream from a PC to a supported phone, tablet, TV, streaming device, another computer, or compatible headset. Steam currently lists iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, Android devices and TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Raspberry Pi 3/3+/4/5, Windows, Linux, macOS, and Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro. Availability and minimum system requirements can vary by platform; check Steam’s current Remote Play page and your device’s app listing.

PC-to-PC Remote Play
To play on a second computer, sign in to Steam on both PCs and start the game remotely from the receiving PC’s Steam Library. Connect the controller to that receiving PC.
Remote Play Together
This feature lets people join the host’s local multiplayer game online; it is not just a way to mirror the game on another screen. The host owns and runs the game, and guests can use their own controllers. The game must support Remote Play Together for the intended multiplayer session. Steam says up to four players can join, with more potentially possible depending on connection quality. The host can control whether guests share keyboard and mouse input. Connect a controller to the streaming device
USB: the simplest troubleshooting test
- Plug the controller into the receiving device before starting the session.
- Open Steam Link or Steam on the receiving PC and connect to the host.
- Start the game and test movement, buttons, and the Steam overlay.
USB avoids Bluetooth pairing and interference, so try it when a wireless connection is unreliable. Check that the receiving device supports the controller and has the right cable or adapter.

- Open Bluetooth settings on the device that will display the stream.
- Put the controller into pairing mode.
- Select it from the device list and complete pairing.
- Open Steam Link and verify that the controller responds before launching the game.
Menu names vary across devices. Steam’s Bluetooth instructions for legacy Steam Link hardware also describe pairing through the device’s Bluetooth settings. A controller described as wireless may use a proprietary USB adapter rather than Bluetooth; check its connection requirements before trying to pair it.

Examples: PlayStation and Xbox controllers
- PS4 DualShock 4: Steam’s pairing instructions say to hold PS + Share until the controller flashes, select “Wireless Controller” in the Bluetooth list, and confirm pairing. See Steam’s PS4 controller instructions.
- Xbox controllers: Compatibility depends on the model, client, and connection method. In one specific Steam Link support path, Steam lists the Xbox Series X controller as supported over USB but not Bluetooth. Treat that as a documented limitation for that support path, not a universal rule for every Xbox model or device. See Steam’s Xbox controller guidance.
- DualSense and other PlayStation controllers: A successful connection does not guarantee that every game will show PlayStation button prompts or support features such as gyro, touchpad input, haptics, or adaptive triggers through the streaming setup. Those details depend on the game and client.
- Generic Bluetooth gamepads: They may work when the client recognizes them as a standard controller, but button mapping varies. Steam recommends checking that the controller can pair with another Bluetooth host and that it has charge in its Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance.
When Steam Link does not detect the controller
The controller does not appear on the receiving device
- Charge it or replace its batteries, then retry pairing mode.
- Check whether it uses Bluetooth or a proprietary wireless adapter.
- Test it with another device to see whether it pairs at all.
- Forget or remove the old pairing in Bluetooth settings, then pair again.
Steam’s pairing recovery steps include checking the charge, testing another device, removing the existing pairing, and retrying.
It pairs, then disconnects
- Try USB to separate controller or Bluetooth problems from streaming problems.
- Move closer to the receiving device and reduce nearby wireless interference.
- Disconnect the controller from other devices that may reconnect to it automatically.
- Forget the pairing and pair again; check the manufacturer’s official firmware update method if disconnections continue.
Check Steam Link’s input-streaming setting
Steam’s support instructions identify an input-streaming option under Settings → Streaming → Advanced Options. Menu names can differ by client and version. If input is not reaching the host, check that setting along with the controller’s connection to the receiving device. See Steam’s input-streaming guidance.

The controller connects, but the game ignores it
There are three separate checks: the receiving device must recognize the controller, Steam Link must transmit its input, and the game must accept that input. Passing the first two does not guarantee the third.

- Test the controller in the Steam Link interface or another game to confirm it is being detected.
- Restart Steam Link and the game, then reconnect the session.
- In the game’s Steam Library entry, open Properties and its Controller settings. Try Steam Input’s default or enabled option if the game does not detect input; if behavior worsens, try another available setting, including disabled.
- Check whether the game supports controllers. Some games expect XInput-style input, need a custom Steam Input layout, or are designed for keyboard and mouse only.
Steam Input can map controls for supported setups, but it does not guarantee that every game or launcher will work. A game may show Xbox-style button labels with a PlayStation controller, and some launchers, anti-cheat systems, or non-Steam games may handle input differently.

Remote Play Together: check the guest’s input
Each guest should connect a controller to the device they use to join. If a guest can see the stream but cannot play, confirm they have joined the session, the game supports Remote Play Together, and the host has not disabled guest input. If the input channel appears stuck, the host can stop and restart the session.
Touch controls or a physical controller?
Steam Link can stream to mobile devices, but touchscreen controls vary by game and are not a substitute for a physical gamepad in every title. Steam notes that some games have controls optimized for supported devices; check the individual game’s options.
- A physical controller is usually the better fit for action games, racing games, platformers, fighting games, and local multiplayer.
- Touch controls may be adequate for turn-based, strategy, card, puzzle, or mouse-driven games, depending on the game’s layout.
Why does Steam streaming feel laggy?
Steam describes Remote Play as a low-latency streaming system, but that does not mean every setup will feel instantaneous. A controller can be working correctly while the response still feels delayed. Possible causes include weak or congested Wi-Fi, a host connected wirelessly, a distant client, host encoding load, internet routing during an away-from-home session, or a television’s image processing. Bluetooth can add its own connection variables.

If the game still feels delayed, check the host, network, and display rather than assuming the controller is not being detected. There is no single internet-speed threshold that guarantees a responsive session: resolution, frame rate, hardware, network conditions, and whether you are playing locally or over the internet all matter.
