Counter-Strike 2’s official minimum is modest on paper: Windows 10 or Ubuntu 20.04, a four-thread CPU, 8 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11/Shader Model 5.0 GPU on Windows (or supported Vulkan hardware on Linux), and 85 GB of free space. Those figures describe an eligibility floor—not guaranteed smooth competitive play or a specific frame rate.
Official Counter-Strike 2 minimum requirements
Valve publishes minimum requirements only on the current Counter-Strike 2 Steam listing. It does not publish an official recommended CPU, GPU, RAM amount, resolution, or FPS target.

Four CPU threads are an eligibility threshold
The i5-750 reference is old, and “four hardware threads” does not describe modern gaming performance. A newer processor with more cores can still differ substantially in single-thread speed and frame-time consistency. Competitive play at high refresh rates generally needs considerably more CPU headroom than the minimum promises.

8 GB of RAM is the floor
Eight gigabytes is Valve’s minimum, not an official recommendation. Windows, Steam, browser tabs, recording software, antivirus, and overlays consume part of that memory. A 16 GB kit is a more sensible target for a new or upgraded gaming system. Dual-channel memory can also help integrated graphics, which share system RAM.
API support does not equal good performance
A graphics chip can support DirectX 11 and Shader Model 5.0 yet still deliver inconsistent frame rates. Integrated graphics, low-power laptop GPUs, thermal throttling, and outdated drivers can all cause stutter or severe dips in busy scenes. Laptop GPU names also do not guarantee desktop-level performance.
85 GB means free space
The listing specifies 85 GB available, not an 85 GB drive capacity. Leave additional room for updates, shader caches, the operating system, and other applications. A 128 GB drive is a poor long-term fit; a 500 GB SSD is a practical minimum for a dedicated gaming system, while 1 TB is more comfortable. An SSD can improve loading and asset streaming, but it cannot fix an inadequate CPU or GPU.

Check every requirement rather than judging by the computer’s age or a component’s name alone.
Windows checklist
- Press Windows key + R, enter
dxdiag, and open the System tab. - Confirm the Windows version, processor, and installed memory.
- Open the Display or Render tab and note the GPU model, dedicated memory, and DirectX feature information.
- In Steam, check the drive containing your library and confirm at least 85 GB is free, preferably more.
Microsoft can change diagnostic-tab labels, so verify the exact wording on your current Windows installation.
Linux checklist
Use your distribution’s system-information panel or terminal tools to identify CPU thread count, RAM, GPU model, active Vulkan driver, and free storage. Verify the driver as well as the GPU: supported hardware with a missing or outdated Vulkan driver can still fail to launch correctly.

Minimum, practical target, and high-refresh play

There is no official Valve FPS promise. Actual results depend on the complete system, resolution, settings, drivers, background processes, map, and game build. “Can run CS2” is not the same as fully using a high-refresh monitor.

Windows 11
Valve lists Windows 10 as the minimum. Current Windows 11 PCs are the relevant modern Windows target, but check the live Steam listing after major platform or driver changes.
Linux and SteamOS
Linux has its own requirements: Ubuntu 20.04, supported AMD GCN-or-newer or NVIDIA Kepler-or-newer hardware, current Vulkan drivers, and highly recommended VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library support. A PC that meets the Windows table will not necessarily perform identically under SteamOS.

macOS
The current Steam requirements list Windows and SteamOS/Linux only; macOS is not listed as a supported platform for CS2. Do not assume native installation or unofficial compatibility methods will work.

Below 8 GB RAM
Install a compatible 16 GB kit if the motherboard or laptop supports it. Match DDR generation, DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor, capacity limits, and channel layout.

A CPU and platform upgrade is usually more appropriate than buying a stronger graphics card. Check motherboard compatibility, cooling, and power requirements.

A graphics upgrade may be necessary, subject to case clearance, power-supply capacity, connectors, and CPU compatibility.
Hard disk or nearly full drive
Move the game to a 500 GB or 1 TB SSD where possible. This improves responsiveness but does not turn an underpowered system into a high-FPS machine.
GPU-limited at your chosen resolution
Upgrade the graphics card only after checking the CPU, power supply, airflow, and available space. RTX 4060 and Radeon RX 7600 are examples of modern 1080p-class cards, not CS2 requirements. NVIDIA lists the RTX 4060 with 8 GB GDDR6 and a 550 W required system-power figure: official RTX 4060 specifications. AMD lists the RX 7600 with 8 GB GDDR6, 165 W typical board power, and a 550 W minimum recommended PSU: official RX 7600 specifications.

- Use the current Counter-Strike 2 Steam listing rather than an old CS:GO requirements guide.
- Update the graphics driver and restart Steam and the PC afterward.
- On a laptop, confirm CS2 is using the intended dedicated GPU.
- Check free storage and move the installation if the drive is nearly full.
- Use Steam’s file-integrity verification when files appear corrupted.
- If the game stutters, disable background recording, browser tabs, overlays, and unnecessary startup software as a test.
- On Linux, verify Vulkan driver installation and compatibility before concluding that the GPU is unsupported.
Bottom line
CS2’s official floor is 8 GB RAM, four hardware CPU threads, a DirectX 11/Shader Model 5.0 GPU on Windows (or supported Vulkan hardware on Linux), and 85 GB of free storage. Meeting it may be enough to launch and play at reduced settings, but it does not guarantee smooth competitive performance. For a new system, 16 GB RAM, an SSD, and a modern CPU with a discrete 1080p-class GPU provide a more useful margin.
