Yes—you can use a PS4 DUALSHOCK 4 with a compatible Android phone over Bluetooth or a wired USB connection. Sony’s U.S. support page lists Android 10 and later, although another Sony controller page lists Android 12 and later, so check your phone and the game’s requirements. Pairing the controller does not guarantee that every Android game will accept it.
What you need
- A charged, functioning DUALSHOCK 4.
- An Android phone with Bluetooth, or USB host/OTG support for wired play.
- Android 10 or later as the conservative baseline listed on Sony’s U.S. support page. A separate Sony page lists Android 12 or later, so compatibility is device-specific.
- A game, cloud service, or Remote Play app that supports external controllers.
- For wired use, a data-capable Micro-USB cable and, on USB-C phones, a USB-C OTG adapter.
Pair the PS4 controller by Bluetooth
1. Put the DUALSHOCK 4 into pairing mode
- Disconnect the controller’s USB cable.
- If the light bar is on, hold the PS button until the controller turns off.
- Hold SHARE, then hold PS as well.
- Keep both buttons pressed until the light bar flashes white.
This is the pairing procedure documented by Sony.
2. Select it in Android’s Bluetooth settings
- Open Settings.
- Choose Connected devices (the wording varies by manufacturer).
- Tap Pair new device and keep the screen open while the controller light flashes.
- Select Wireless Controller when it appears.
Google documents this general path in its Android controller guide. Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, Xiaomi and other phones may use slightly different labels, but you are looking for the Bluetooth device-pairing screen.
3. Confirm that it works
The controller should move to your paired-device list and its light bar should stop flashing. Open a game that explicitly supports controllers and test the D-pad, both sticks, triggers and face buttons. Android can report a successful connection even when an individual game ignores gamepad input.
Which Android games work?
There is no universal list: support is decided by each app. Check the Google Play listing and the game’s control settings for terms such as controller, gamepad or external input. A title may offer full controls, only movement and basic buttons, controller support only during gameplay, or no support at all. Pair the DUALSHOCK 4 before launching the game; some apps need to be restarted after a controller connects.

Using the controller with PS Remote Play
A paired controller can control compatible games streamed through PS Remote Play. This is different from running a game locally on your phone:
- Direct Android gaming: the game runs on the phone.
- Remote Play: your PS4 runs the game and streams its video and audio to Android.
- Cloud gaming: a separate service runs the game remotely.
Connecting the DUALSHOCK 4 alone does not provide access to your PS4 library. Remote Play also requires the app, a configured PS4, the appropriate PlayStation account access and a suitable network connection.
Use a wired USB connection
USB is useful when Bluetooth pairing fails, wireless input is unreliable, or you want to test whether the controller itself works. On a USB-C phone, connect the controller’s Micro-USB cable through a USB-C OTG adapter. Use a known data cable; charge-only cables will not carry controller input. The phone must support USB host mode.

Android and Sony support wired controllers, but cable and adapter compatibility varies by phone. If nothing appears, try another OTG adapter, another data cable, and—if possible—a second Android device. Do not assume every phone can power or charge the controller through OTG.
Important feature limitations
On most non-Xperia Android devices, Sony lists these Bluetooth limitations:
- Touchpad input is unavailable.
- You cannot change the light-bar color.
- Rumble and motion sensing do not work.
- Headphone-jack audio is not supported, even though headphones may physically fit.
Some Xperia configurations may support more features, but that should not be generalized to every Xperia model or Android version. Game support can impose additional limitations.

Troubleshooting
The controller does not appear
- Turn it off completely and unplug USB.
- Repeat SHARE + PS until the light flashes white.
- Keep the Bluetooth settings page open and move the controller close to the phone.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, then restart the phone.
- Remove an old Wireless Controller entry and retry.
- If necessary, use the small reset button on the controller’s rear and repeat pairing. If it still fails, consult Sony support.
It connects, but the game does nothing
The game may not support controllers, may require an in-game option, or may need to be restarted. Force-close and reopen it, inspect its control settings, then test another known controller-compatible title. Avoid assuming that a button-mapping app will solve the problem; mapping tools can create accessibility, performance or game-policy issues.

Charge the controller, reduce distance and obstructions, and move away from potential Bluetooth interference. A wired connection can isolate Bluetooth problems, but it cannot remove latency caused by Remote Play, cloud streaming, network congestion, game performance or phone thermal throttling.
A PIN prompt appears
Sony’s documented procedure does not specify a PIN. Cancel the prompt, remove the saved device, restart Bluetooth and try pairing mode again. If the phone continues to demand a code, try USB or investigate that phone’s Bluetooth compatibility rather than guessing a PIN.

Reconnect the controller to your PS4
The DUALSHOCK 4 pairs with one device at a time, so switching back to the console requires a fresh pairing:
- Turn on the PS4.
- Connect the controller to the console with a compatible USB data cable.
- Press the PS button and wait for registration.
- Unplug the cable if you want to continue wirelessly.
If the controller keeps reconnecting to the phone, temporarily turn off the phone’s Bluetooth or choose Forget/Unpair for Wireless Controller first.

Should you buy something else?
Use the DUALSHOCK 4 if you already own it, prefer a full-size console pad, and play with the phone on a stand. Add a DUALSHOCK 4 phone mount if you want a handheld setup; verify phone width, case clearance, clamp strength, weight balance and port access because mounts are not universal.

A dedicated USB-C controller is more portable and reduces setup friction, but costs more and can have tighter phone-fit requirements:
- Backbone One USB-C PlayStation Edition: an integrated handheld design for compatible Android phones, mobile games, cloud services and Remote Play. Backbone associates Android Remote Play support with the PlayStation Edition. It is not required if your DUALSHOCK 4 already works.

- Razer Kishi V3 Pro: a premium, larger-device option. Razer’s catalog showed $149.99 for the V3 Pro and $199.99 for the V3 Pro XL in August 2026. Those models are excessive if you only need to reuse an existing PS4 controller.
The sensible order is free Bluetooth pairing first, USB troubleshooting second, a mount for better ergonomics, and a replacement controller only when portability, integrated grips, direct USB-C or frequent mobile play justify the cost.

Can every Android phone use a PS4 controller?
No. Sony documents compatible Android devices, with Android 10+ listed on its U.S. support page and Android 12+ on another current controller page. Bluetooth or USB host support and the game’s own compatibility also matter.
Why is it called “Wireless Controller” instead of DUALSHOCK 4?
That is the normal Bluetooth device name shown by many Android phones. Select it when the controller is flashing white.
Can I play PS4 games directly on Android after pairing?
No. Pairing supplies input only. PS4 games require a separate Remote Play setup, in which the console runs the game and streams it to the phone.
Do I need an app to map the buttons?
Usually not. Use the game’s native controller support first. Mapping apps are a last resort because they can cause compatibility, accessibility, performance or game-policy problems.
