For Monday, August 4, 2025, the New York Times Connections puzzle is game #785. Below are spoiler-ordered hints, followed by the four category labels and the complete solution. Stop before the section that reveals the answers if you are still solving.
How Connections works
Connections gives you 16 words and asks you to find four groups of four items that share something in common. Each group has a color: yellow is generally the easiest and purple the most difficult. The same word can appear to fit more than one category, so the intended link matters.
The daily puzzle releases at midnight in your local time zone. You can play on the NYT Games website and app, nytimes.com/theathletic, and the News app.

Why the blue group works
APPLE supplies “A,” EFFORT supplies “E,” and VENDETTA supplies “V” in the familiar “A is for…” style. COOKIE points to Cookie Monster, the Sesame Street character, completing the deliberately mixed set.
Why the purple group works
Each word sounds like the names of two letters when spoken: DECAY resembles “D-K,” EASY resembles “E-Z,” GEO resembles “G-O,” and ZITI resembles “Z-T.”
