For a combat-focused Bard in Baldur’s Gate 3, College of Swords is the clearest starting point: it unlocks Blade Flourish at Bard level 3 and Extra Attack at level 6. From there, choose between a ranged build that pairs Swords Bard 10 with Fighter 2, or a melee build that pairs Paladin 2 with Swords Bard 10 for Divine Smite. Neither is a proven universal best; the right choice depends on your preferred range, resource use, and willingness to respec.
Why College of Swords is a strong combat foundation
College of Swords gives a Bard a direct route into weapon combat. At Bard level 3, Blade Flourish adds tactical effects to attacks by spending Bardic Inspiration; at Bard level 6, the Swords Bard gains Extra Attack. Those milestones make it possible to combine weapon damage with Bard spells rather than choosing one role exclusively. What Blade Flourish adds
Flourishes consume Bardic Inspiration, so they are a limited resource rather than a free bonus on every attack. Choose the effect to suit the moment: Defensive Flourish, for example, grants a fixed +4 Armour Class when its attack hits. The Blade Flourish reference describes the available effects.
This combination rewards active resource management. A flourish can provide damage or a defensive benefit, but spending Inspiration on an attack means it is not available for another Bard feature until replenished.

Choose ranged burst or melee smites
Recent PC Gamer build recommendations present two distinct Swords Bard multiclass directions: Swords Bard 10/Fighter 2 for ranged attacks, and Paladin 2/Swords Bard 10 for melee smiting. They are editorial build recommendations, not official rankings or results from a standardized damage test. The sections below describe their tradeoffs without implying a universal damage winner.

Ranged: Swords Bard 10 / Fighter 2
This route emphasizes ranged Slashing Flourish, with Fighter levels providing Action Surge. The appeal is an action-economy option alongside the Bard’s ranged attacks. Melee: Paladin 2 / Swords Bard 10
This route uses a Dexterity-oriented melee character and Paladin’s Divine Smite alongside Swords Bard features. Smites draw on spell slots, so this build adds another reason to manage a finite resource pool. Its level order is less straightforward than the final split suggests, and the recommendation may rely on respeccing to reach the intended progression. Consult the same PC Gamer overview for the build’s framing; do not assume the level split alone specifies a complete leveling plan.

College of Valour: more ally-focused support
Valour also gains Extra Attack at level 6, making it a legitimate martial comparison. Its combat inspiration feature is oriented toward improving allies’ combat prowess, whereas the Swords Bard approach centers on the Bard’s own weapon attacks and Flourishes. If you would rather support the party’s attacks than build around personal flourishes, compare the College of Valour progression.

College of Glamour: a Patch 8 alternative
Patch 8 added College of Glamour as a Bard subclass. Xbox Wire reported the patch live on April 15, 2025, with 12 new subclasses; Larian’s forum post described Patch 8 as the final major patch. Glamour is therefore a current subclass option, but the available sources do not directly rank it against Swords for every combat role. See Xbox Wire’s Patch 8 announcement and Larian’s forum post.

- Choose Swords Bard if you want the Bard to make weapon attacks a central part of combat and use Flourishes for tactical flexibility.
- Choose the Fighter multiclass direction if you prefer ranged combat and want Action Surge, while accepting less Bard progression.
- Choose the Paladin multiclass direction if you want melee attacks backed by Divine Smite and are comfortable with a more complicated progression and spell-slot management.
- Compare Valour if party-oriented combat inspiration matters more to you than a Swords Bard’s personal Flourish focus.
- Consider Glamour if you want to explore the Patch 8 Bard subclass options, while treating its relative combat strength as unranked by the sources cited here.
