Xbox Cloud Gaming is available through the Xbox app on select LG Smart TVs, but it is not a new rollout: LG announced availability on April 23, 2025. The app streams games from Microsoft’s cloud rather than installing or running them on the TV. Compatibility is limited to select models supporting webOS 24 or newer, so check your exact TV and software before subscribing or buying a controller.
What Xbox Cloud Gaming on an LG TV does
The Xbox app lets a supported TV stream compatible games from Microsoft’s cloud. Your controller sends input over the internet, and the TV displays the returned video stream. You do not need an Xbox console, disc, or local game installation, but you do need a supported TV, a compatible controller, a supported region, and usually a Game Pass subscription. The app is not the same as installing Xbox games directly on the television, and it does not guarantee access to every feature of an Xbox console.
Xbox and LG announced their partnership on January 6, 2025, and LG announced the app’s availability on April 23, 2025. LG describes access through its Gaming Portal and LG Apps. Xbox’s partnership announcement and LG’s launch announcement provide the dated announcements.

Which LG TVs are compatible?
Xbox’s current TV compatibility information says the app works on select LG TVs with webOS 24 or newer. It also names select 2022 and 2023 models updated to software version 23.20.01 or later: OLED models from 2022 and 2023, plus select 2023 QNED, NanoCell, and UHD TVs. These are model-specific qualifications, not blanket support for every television from those years. Newer model years are not an automatic guarantee either; verify the individual model and app availability in your region on Xbox’s TV compatibility page.

To check your set, open Settings, then All Settings, and look under Support or General for Software Update or TV Information. Menu names vary by webOS version and region. Check the installed version, run Check for Updates if available, and restart the TV after an update. The practical confirmation is that the TV meets the applicable software requirement and offers the Xbox app in its Gaming Portal or app catalog.
How to open and start a game
- Connect the TV to the internet and install any available software update. Restart it afterward.
- Open the LG Gaming Portal from the TV home screen, or check LG Apps if the app is listed there instead.
- Select the Xbox app and sign in with your Microsoft/Xbox account.
- Connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB, depending on the controller and TV.
- Choose a cloud-playable game shown in the app and start streaming.
What you need: plan, controller, internet and region
Game Pass or a free-to-play exception
Most cloud games require an active Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription. Select free-to-play cloud games, including supported titles such as Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Xbox also allows streaming of select games a user owns or buys, but ownership alone does not make every game streamable or remove the supported-device and region requirements. Check the current Xbox Cloud Gaming catalog and account terms; availability changes by title, plan, platform, region, and time.

The LG launch announcement in April 2025 described Game Pass Ultimate at launch. Xbox’s current TV information lists cloud gaming across Essential, Premium, and Ultimate, with different catalogs and benefits. Do not assume that the full Game Pass library is cloud-enabled or that every tier has identical queue times or stream quality. Xbox’s current TV page displays placeholder subscription prices rather than reliable dollar amounts, so check the price and renewal terms shown at signup for your country before paying.

Controller
Xbox identifies Xbox controllers, Sony PlayStation controllers, and other verified compatible controllers for TV cloud gaming. An Xbox Wireless Controller is the straightforward starting choice; a DualSense or DualShock 4 may also work if the specific TV and app recognize it. Compatibility is not guaranteed for every Bluetooth gamepad. Use Xbox’s verified-controller information on its TV page to check a specific model. If wireless pairing is unreliable, try USB if the TV and controller support wired input. Do not assume touch controls are available on an LG TV just because some cloud games support touch on other devices.

Internet connection and location
Xbox’s general cloud-gaming guidance gives 10 Mbps download speed as a minimum, while its TV guidance lists 20 Mbps down and recommends wired Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Those are connection guidelines, not a guarantee of smooth play. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, and distance to the router can matter as much as download speed. Service and app availability also vary by supported region; check Xbox’s current region and device information rather than relying on LG’s initial launch-country list.
- Use Ethernet if practical, or 5 GHz Wi-Fi instead of a congested 2.4 GHz network.
- Keep the router reasonably close to the TV and pause large downloads or other heavy streaming during play.
- Test at the time and place you expect to game; results can worsen during network congestion.
Xbox does not publish one universal resolution, frame rate, or latency guarantee for every LG model, game, and region. Do not buy the TV app expecting a specific stream specification.

Which Game Pass tier makes sense?
Xbox’s current TV page describes these tiers and benefits. Catalog counts and features are Xbox’s plan positioning, not a promise that every listed game can be streamed on an LG TV.

Does the LG app replace an Xbox console?
It can be a sensible way to try cloud gaming without buying a console if you already own a compatible LG TV, have reliable internet, and are comfortable with streaming and a changing cloud catalog. It is less suitable when low and predictable input latency, offline play, physical media, or a particular console feature matters.

Competitive shooters and fighting games are more sensitive to latency than many casual or single-player games. If your connection is unreliable, you have a restrictive data cap, or the specific game you want is not cloud-enabled, a console is the more dependable route. Xbox lists select Amazon Fire TV devices, Samsung Smart TVs, and select VIDAA devices as other TV options, but these remain model- and region-dependent; see its supported TV devices.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Xbox app is missing
- Confirm the exact TV model rather than relying only on its year or product family.
- Check the software version and install available updates, then restart the TV.
- Look in both the Gaming Portal and LG Apps; availability and interface labels can vary.
- Confirm Xbox cloud gaming and the TV app are available in your region.
If the model is unsupported, do not assume a firmware update will add the app. A supported streaming device or Xbox console is an alternative to replacing the TV.

- Check that the controller supports Bluetooth if pairing wirelessly, and disconnect it from other nearby devices.
- Remove it from the TV’s Bluetooth device list and pair it again; update controller firmware where applicable.
- Try USB if supported, or test with an Xbox controller if a third-party pad is not recognized.
A game is unavailable or will not launch
The game may not support cloud play, may not be included with your tier, may be restricted in your region, or may require a feature the TV app does not support. Confirm that your subscription is active and check the current cloud catalog. A game appearing in Game Pass does not by itself mean it can be streamed to the LG app.

The picture stutters or controls feel delayed
- Move from 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to 5 GHz, or test Ethernet.
- Pause other bandwidth-heavy activity and restart the router and TV.
- Test at another time and see whether the problem affects one game or all games.
- Try a wired controller if supported; if performance remains poor, the connection’s latency or packet loss may be the limiting factor rather than download speed alone.
