On May 28, 2020, a report said Google Stadia had added a 1440p streaming option and announced a mix of games and content, including PUBG Ranked Mode. It described Jotun: Valhalla Edition and Sundered: Eldritch Edition as available that week, while other items were already available or scheduled for later. The report did not establish which devices supported 1440p or whether games rendered natively at that resolution. Stadia is no longer an active consumer gaming service, so this is a historical update, not a setup guide.
What Stadia’s 1440p update meant
The May 28, 2020 report described 1440p as a new streaming-quality tier between Stadia’s existing 1080p and 4K-oriented options. The relevant term is 1440p streaming: it refers to the resolution of the video delivered to a screen, not necessarily the resolution at which a game was rendered internally. The report did not establish that every supported title rendered natively at 2560×1440. Contemporary report, May 28, 2020.
1440p, also called QHD, commonly means 2560×1440 pixels on a PC display. It is a more precise label here than “2K,” a shorthand that can mean different things in consumer and cinema contexts. On a QHD monitor, a 1440p stream could provide a closer match to the screen’s resolution than 1080p; compared with 4K, it offered a middle ground in pixel count. That could make it useful to someone who wanted more detail than 1080p without choosing the highest-resolution tier.

Resolution alone does not guarantee a visibly sharper picture. The result also depends on the game’s internal rendering, stream compression, display size and viewing distance. A 1440p stream may demand more bandwidth than 1080p and less than 4K in principle, but the report supplied no bitrate or bandwidth requirements. It also provided no evidence that choosing 1440p would reduce input latency: latency depends on the network path and congestion, encoding and decoding, input device, and display processing, among other factors.

What the report said about availability
The announcement’s list mixed games, an edition, a game mode and content updates; it did not mean that all six items were newly released on the same day. The prices below are those reported in 2020, not current prices or evidence of present-day availability.

The report’s wording does not establish that every announced item launched on its listed date or was available to every Stadia player simultaneously. Its game and price details are historical. May 28, 2020 report.

What PUBG Ranked Mode offered
PUBG’s Ranked Mode was a competitive queue with its own ranks and Rank Points, which changed according to performance. PUBG’s support FAQ described matches for up to 64 players and a ruleset adjusted for a more competitive, faster-paced match. It also said that settings could be changed, so these are contemporary launch-period characteristics, not a promise that the mode’s rules stayed fixed across seasons. PUBG Ranked Mode FAQ.
- Up to 64 players: the FAQ described this as the Ranked match size.
- Separate competitive progression: players competed for ranks and Rank Points.
- More loot: the FAQ described an overall increase in item loot spawns.
- No Red Zone: the Red Zone was removed from the contemporary Ranked ruleset.
- Faster zone pacing: Blue Zone timing and speed were adjusted to make matches faster-paced.
- Seasonal adjustments: rules and map pools were not permanently fixed; PUBG said Ranked settings could be adjusted.
The contemporary description characterized Ranked as bot-free, unlike normal matches that could include bots depending on version or platform. It does not establish Stadia-specific matchmaking population, cross-platform queue behavior, latency, or regional availability, so those should not be inferred from the announcement.

What the announcement did not establish
The report is evidence of what was reported in May 2020, not a complete technical specification. In particular, it did not provide a definitive compatibility or performance record.

- Device and client support: it did not give a device-by-device list or confirm whether 1440p appeared in the web app, Android app, Chromecast, or every client.
- Display and browser requirements: it did not specify whether a compatible QHD monitor or particular browser was required, or whether mobile devices received a full 2560×1440 stream rather than a scaled output.
- Game coverage and rendering: it did not say that every game offered the option or that each game rendered natively at 1440p.
- Rollout scope: it did not establish a global rollout, or whether availability varied by account, client, or region.
- Performance: it supplied no bitrate, frame-rate target, bandwidth requirement, or latency measurements.
- PUBG on Stadia: it did not report queue population, cross-platform matchmaking, regional support, or measured input latency.
Accordingly, the broad phrase “1440p gaming” should be read as a reported streaming/output option, not proof of native 1440p rendering on every title or universal support across Stadia devices.
Why the update mattered in 2020—and what it means now
The update paired a technical change with additions to Stadia’s content offering: 1440p was intended to fill a quality gap between 1080p and 4K, while the game announcements included both new releases and updates for existing games. PUBG Ranked Mode was notable as multiplayer content because it offered Stadia’s PUBG audience a separate competitive queue and progression system, rather than simply another single-player release. The announcement alone, however, does not show that Stadia had resolved broader questions about its library or player populations.

Google later announced in February 2021 that it was winding down Stadia Games & Entertainment while continuing to support Stadia as a platform at that time. Google’s announcement, February 1, 2021. Stadia is no longer available as a consumer gaming platform, so there is no current Stadia setting to enable and no way to play these titles through Stadia today.
