You do not need a pile of “FPS booster” utilities to get more from a Windows gaming PC. Start with the tools that solve a real need: Game Bar for quick captures, OBS for streaming, the software made for your GPU, and the launcher or chat app your games already use. The picks below are free to use for the jobs described, while noting where accounts, paid subscriptions, hardware limits, or extra background processes come into play.

“Free” here means the software can do the stated job without a required purchase. It does not mean every game in a launcher is free, every premium feature is included, or that an app has no account, resource, or privacy cost.
Use Windows’ built-in capture before adding another overlay
Xbox Game Bar for quick clips
Press Windows logo key + G to open Xbox Game Bar. Its widgets can provide capture, screenshots, chat and other in-game functions; Microsoft documents the overlay and its features in its Game Bar guide. Depending on Windows configuration, Windows logo key + Alt + R starts or stops a recording, and Windows logo key + Alt + PrtScn takes a screenshot. Check the Capture widget’s current labels if a shortcut behaves differently.
Game Bar is convenient when you want a short clip or screenshot without setting up a recording project. It offers less control than OBS over scenes, audio tracks and encoders. A protected title, unusual full-screen mode or game-specific restriction may also prevent capture. Widgets and behavior can differ between Windows builds.

Keep Store-delivered components current
If Game Bar or an Xbox app is misbehaving, check for updates in Microsoft Store: open Microsoft Store, select Library, then choose Get updates. Microsoft notes that Store apps may also update automatically; see its app and game update instructions.
Choose OBS when capture needs more control
OBS Studio is the better fit for livestreams, scene switching, webcam layouts, multiple audio sources and local recordings you want to configure. OBS describes its official software as free and open source, without watermarks, feature limitations, advertisements or bundled software. You do not need an OBS account. Download it from the official OBS site; OBS warns against unofficial copies and requests to pay for the software.
Set up a first recording
- Download and install OBS from its official site.
- Run the auto-configuration wizard and choose Optimize for streaming or Optimize just for recording.
- Check the base canvas resolution and choose the output resolution and frame rate your PC can handle.
- Add a Game Capture source for the game, then add the microphone and desktop-audio sources you actually need.
- Record a short test and play it back. Confirm that the picture, microphone, game audio and frame pacing are acceptable before a live session.
Fix common capture problems
- Game Capture is black: try Window Capture, then Display Capture. Some games, protected content and anti-cheat configurations may not permit capture.
- No picture after changing privileges: run OBS and the game at the same privilege level rather than elevating just one.
- Missing or doubled audio: check OBS’s audio mixer and avoid recording the same sound through overlapping desktop- and application-audio paths.
- Encoder overload or uneven video: reduce output resolution or frame rate, or test a supported hardware encoder. Hardware encoding is not a guarantee of zero GPU load.
- Dropped stream frames: distinguish network drops from rendering or encoding problems. Lower bitrate if your upload connection cannot sustain the stream, and check OBS’s log after the session.
OBS’s Steam FAQ says its Steam edition is free and equivalent to the version distributed from the OBS website.

Install the GPU software that matches your graphics card
Use one first-party suite for the GPU you have, not both “just in case.” Driver updates, game profiles, capture, monitoring and tuning are separate functions; having them in one app does not make every recommendation or automatic setting best for every game.
NVIDIA App for GeForce cards
The NVIDIA App brings together GeForce driver updates, game and application settings, GPU options, an in-game overlay and capture features. NVIDIA’s app FAQ lists Windows 11 version 22H2 or later as a requirement. Verify that requirement against your Windows installation before relying on the app. It is intended for NVIDIA GPU owners; some functions may have account or hardware requirements.

AMD Adrenalin for Radeon cards
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition manages Radeon drivers, game profiles, performance tuning and capture, and may expose features such as Anti-Lag, Radeon Super Resolution, FreeSync or HYPR-RX. Availability depends on the GPU generation, driver, game and display. AMD’s driver support page is the place to check downloads and supported Windows versions.
Upscaling or frame generation can raise displayed smoothness in supported games, but it can also affect image quality, artifacts and latency. Compare frame-time consistency and responsiveness as well as the frame-rate counter. Treat automatic tuning as a starting point: change one setting at a time and test stability instead of assuming an overclock will fix a performance problem.

A new driver can help with a particular game, but newer is not automatically better for every setup. Note your current version, read release notes for relevant issues and avoid changing drivers just before an important tournament or stream. If a new driver causes a reproducible problem, roll back to the previous version or use the GPU vendor’s clean-install option. Laptop owners may need the manufacturer’s driver where a generic vendor package causes instability or removes device-specific behavior.
Pick launchers for your library, not for an FPS promise
Launchers provide game access, updates, cloud saves where supported, community features and library organization. They do not inherently improve game performance. Installing a launcher is free; games, DLC, subscriptions and some online services are separate costs.

The Xbox PC app page lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later, 150 MB of storage and a 720p display among the app requirements; individual games can require much more. Game Pass is a separate subscription, and cloud gaming depends on subscription eligibility, supported titles, region and network quality. Epic’s PC apps directory has included free apps such as Discord and GOG GALAXY, but listings and promotions can change, and a free listing may include optional paid content.

Use voice chat without stacking overlays
Discord combines voice channels, text, direct messages and communities, making it useful when your group already uses it. Core Discord is free; Nitro is an optional paid tier, not a requirement for ordinary voice chat. Set per-server permissions carefully, choose push-to-talk if open-mic noise is a problem, and review account security and privacy settings.
Screen sharing and an always-on overlay can use resources or conflict with a game, another overlay or anti-cheat software. If the overlay causes a crash or warning, turn it off first. If all you need is voice, the game’s built-in chat, Steam voice chat or Xbox chat may be enough without another startup process.
Add Windows utilities only when they solve a real annoyance
PowerToys for desktop workflow
Microsoft PowerToys is a free utility suite, not a game optimizer. FancyZones can arrange windows; PowerToys Run can launch apps; Always on Top can keep reference material visible; other tools include Keyboard Manager, Image Resizer and Color Picker. It requires Windows 10 version 2004 or newer, an x64 or ARM64 processor and the current stable WebView2 runtime. One installation option is:
winget install --id Microsoft.PowerToys --source wingetIf a module interferes with a game shortcut, full-screen app or anti-cheat-sensitive title, disable that module rather than assuming the whole suite is necessary.

7-Zip for archives
7-Zip is useful for extracting compressed mod files, patches and backups. It does not raise performance, but it is a practical utility for common PC game tasks. Get it from the project’s official distribution source rather than a download mirror.
Monitoring and storage tools for troubleshooting
HWiNFO can show detailed hardware sensors; a temperature or utilization reading is evidence to investigate, not proof by itself that a particular component is the bottleneck. WinDirStat or WizTree can help locate large files when a game library fills an SSD. Use them to identify candidates for cleanup, not to delete unknown Windows or game-installation folders.
MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistics Server are commonly used for on-screen monitoring, frame-rate caps and GPU tuning, but fake Afterburner download sites are a known risk. Verify the current legitimate MSI or Guru3D distribution path before downloading. Fan Control can enable custom fan curves, but it uses low-level hardware access and may trigger security warnings or conflict with other utilities. On laptops and handhelds, OEM fan and power controls are often safer; custom curves can increase noise or reduce battery life.

For most players, Microsoft Defender is the sensible Windows security baseline. Keep Windows and games updated, avoid pirated installers and suspicious mod downloads, and use multifactor authentication where available for store accounts. Do not casually disable security features to chase a small or unproven benchmark gain.
Malwarebytes Free is best treated as an occasional second-opinion scanner. Its feature comparison says Quick Scan and Custom Scan are free on Windows, while Threat Scan, scheduled scanning, real-time protection and web protection are paid features. That makes the free tier different from a full-time antivirus replacement. Do not run multiple real-time antivirus products at once; check Malwarebytes’ compatibility guidance before installing.

For any utility, use the developer, GPU manufacturer, Microsoft Store or relevant game platform as the download source—not an SEO download mirror. This matters especially for drivers, tuning utilities, mod tools and anything advertised as an FPS booster.
Why “FPS booster” apps are usually the wrong first install
Frame rate depends on the CPU and GPU, resolution and graphics settings, game engine, thermals, power limits, memory configuration, background tasks, drivers, storage and shader compilation. A monitoring app can help diagnose a bottleneck without improving frame rate itself. No general-purpose utility can guarantee more FPS across games and PCs.
Avoid RAM cleaners, registry cleaners and aggressive game boosters that promise universal gains. They can add startup processes or instability without demonstrating a benefit. Before changing settings, establish a repeatable baseline in the game you care about; then change one thing at a time.

Game Bar, Discord, Steam, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, and recording software can overlap in hotkeys and capture paths. Running all of them together can use additional memory or GPU resources, cause black screens or crashes, or trigger anti-cheat warnings. Enable only the overlays you actually use and turn off the others while testing a problem.
If an overlay causes trouble, disable one at a time and relaunch the game. If the issue disappears, keep that overlay off for the affected title. Avoid installing duplicate recorders or multiple hardware monitors unless you need their distinct functions.

- Use Windows’ built-in security baseline and consider a monitoring tool only while checking temperatures or diagnosing a problem.
Laptop or handheld owner
- Check the device maker’s driver and power guidance if a generic GPU driver causes problems.
- Remember that battery mode, thermals and power limits can change performance substantially.
- Avoid aggressive tuning or desktop-focused fan controls until the device is stable.
