You can often improve gaming performance for free by finding what is limiting your PC, reducing that workload, and removing background or thermal problems. There is no setting that raises FPS on every system: start with a repeatable measurement, change one thing at a time, and keep only changes that improve smoothness without adding stutter or input lag.

Measure before you change settings

Use a game’s built-in benchmark if it has one. Otherwise, choose a repeatable scene and run it the same way before and after each change. Record the game and version, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling and frame-generation settings, and whether the problem is low FPS, stutter, hitching, or input lag.

Also note average FPS, 1% lows if available, GPU and CPU temperatures, GPU utilization, memory use, and whether a laptop is plugged in. Total CPU usage can hide a bottleneck on one heavily loaded core. At 60 FPS, a frame takes about 16.7 ms; at 120 FPS, 8.3 ms; at 144 FPS, 6.9 ms; and at 240 FPS, 4.2 ms. These are conversions, not performance targets.

Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) shows processes, performance, and startup apps. Xbox Game Bar’s performance widget is available with Win + G if enabled. NVIDIA FrameView is another measurement option; its guide describes FPS and frame-time measurement on Windows 10 and later across GeForce, AMD, and Intel hardware (NVIDIA FrameView guide).

Identify what is holding performance back

GPU limit

If GPU utilization stays near its practical maximum and lowering resolution or demanding visual effects noticeably raises FPS, the graphics card is probably the limit. Reduce render resolution or scale, ray tracing, volumetric effects, shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion first. Check GPU temperature and clocks as well: high utilization alone does not establish that cooling is healthy.

CPU limit

If lowering resolution barely changes FPS while the GPU is underused, the CPU or game workload may be limiting performance. One busy CPU core can be enough even when total CPU usage looks moderate. Try reducing crowd density, simulation, physics, foliage, and view distance, and close unneeded background work.

RAM or VRAM pressure

Hitching while entering areas, texture pop-in, or pauses during traversal can point to memory pressure. Check RAM and VRAM use where your tools expose it, and look for disk activity spikes. If VRAM is near capacity, reduce texture quality; if system memory is tight, close browsers and other applications. Pause large downloads and cloud-sync jobs while testing. Do not routinely clear shader caches: they are meant to avoid repeated shader compilation and clearing them can make the next runs stutter.

Thermal or power limit

If performance is initially acceptable but drops after several minutes, inspect temperatures and clock speeds. On a laptop, compare plugged-in performance with battery operation. A blocked vent, soft surface, hot room, or power-saving mode can constrain sustained performance.

Background software or a game-specific issue

If only one game is affected, begin with its graphics settings, renderer option if offered, recent updates, shader preparation, and overlays. If every game is affected, check background tasks, drivers, power behavior, and temperatures first.

Try the lowest-risk free fixes first

Plug in the laptop and improve airflow

Connect a laptop to AC power for gaming tests, place it on a hard surface, and keep intake and exhaust vents clear. Remove visible dust from accessible vents only according to the manufacturer’s safety guidance. For a desktop, make sure exhaust is not blocked by a wall or furniture. These steps may preserve sustained performance rather than raise peak FPS.

Close unnecessary background work

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Sort Processes by CPU, Memory, Disk, or GPU to find work that coincides with the slowdown.
  3. Close only applications you recognize and do not need, such as a browser playing video, a launcher downloading an update, or recording software.
  4. Open Startup apps and disable auto-start entries you do not need, then restart Windows and test again.

Cloud synchronization, antivirus scans, backups, virtual machines, compression jobs, and Windows Update can also compete for resources. Do not end unknown Windows processes or disable security software to chase FPS. Microsoft’s guidance covers checking Task Manager and startup activity (Microsoft: tips to improve PC performance in Windows).

Disable recording and test overlays

Turn off background recording if you do not use it, including Windows Captures or recording features in GPU software. For troubleshooting, also try disabling Discord, Steam, NVIDIA, AMD, RGB, or monitoring overlays one at a time. An overlay has a small or unnoticeable cost on some systems and a measurable one on others; continuous recording can use more resources. If stutter or input problems stop when a feature is disabled, leave it off while gaming or re-enable features one by one to identify the cause.

Choose a suitable Windows power mode

In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode and test Best performance while plugged in if maximum performance matters more than battery life or noise. Microsoft notes that this mode can increase power use and heat, and drain laptop batteries faster (Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance). Use Balanced again if Best performance makes the laptop hotter or louder without a repeatable gain. OEM performance software can also affect laptop behavior.

Enable or test Game Mode

In Windows, open Settings → Gaming → Game Mode, turn it on, and compare the same game scene. Microsoft describes Game Mode as intended to prioritize gaming activity and reduce competing background activity (Microsoft’s gaming PC setup guidance). Treat it as a test, not a guaranteed FPS increase; if a game behaves worse, switch it off and compare again.

Set Windows graphics options for the game

Use the discrete GPU on a hybrid-graphics laptop

On Windows 11, go to Settings → System → Display → Graphics, select the game, choose Options, select High performance, and save. Restart the game. This is most relevant when a laptop has both integrated and discrete graphics; the option asks Windows to prefer the higher-performance GPU. Microsoft’s page documents the setting and supported windowed-game options (Microsoft: optimizations for windowed games).

Test Optimizations for windowed games

In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics and enable Optimizations for windowed games under Default settings. Restart the game and compare if you play a compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 game in windowed or borderless mode. The feature changes the presentation path and can reduce latency or enable supported features such as variable refresh rate; it does not apply universally to all games or Windows versions. See Microsoft’s feature details.

A/B test hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling

If available, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default graphics settings and compare Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS) on and off. Restart as prompted. Availability and results vary by Windows version, GPU, driver, and game. Revert the change if it causes crashes, flickering, worse stutter, or poorer 1% lows.

Lower the settings that match your bottleneck

If the GPU is limiting you

  1. Reduce or disable ray tracing.
  2. Lower resolution or render scale, or enable a supported upscaler.
  3. Reduce volumetric lighting, fog, clouds, or global illumination.
  4. Reduce shadows, reflections, and ambient occlusion.
  5. Lower effects, particles, hair, or water quality if the game offers those controls.

Lowering texture filtering often has a smaller performance and image-quality effect than these settings; AMD recommends its Standard texture-filtering default for most users (AMD graphics settings guidance).

If the CPU is limiting you

Prioritize crowd density, simulation, physics, foliage, and view distance or level of detail. These can increase CPU work, though the effect differs by game. Reducing resolution may do little if the CPU cannot prepare frames quickly enough.

If VRAM is full

Reduce texture quality or texture-streaming settings and retest. Textures primarily affect memory use and image detail; lowering them may not improve average FPS when VRAM is sufficient, but can relieve hitching when it is not. Do not make texture quality your first change unless memory pressure points that way.

Use upscaling and frame generation with realistic expectations

DLSS, FSR, or other upscalers can render the game internally at a lower resolution and reconstruct the image, which may help when the GPU is the limit. Availability depends on the game and hardware. Start with Quality, then try Balanced if needed; Performance can look softer. At ordinary 1080p resolution, Ultra Performance may produce substantial image degradation.

NVIDIA DLSS options are generally selected inside supported games. DLSS Super Resolution reconstructs an image from a lower internal resolution; frame generation creates additional displayed frames in supported titles and hardware configurations. NVIDIA Reflex is aimed at system latency rather than directly raising native rendered FPS (NVIDIA’s gaming technology documentation).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMD FSR is also game- and implementation-dependent; AMD documents supported upscaling and frame-generation technologies on its FSR page. AMD Anti-Lag 2 likewise requires supported games and hardware (AMD Anti-Lag, Boost, and Chill support information).

Frame generation can raise displayed FPS and make motion look smoother, but generated frames are not equivalent to frames rendered by the game engine. Responsiveness remains more closely tied to the underlying rendered frame rate, and generated frames can introduce ghosting, UI artifacts, or errors around fast motion. Judge the result by feel and frame pacing, not the counter alone.

Update graphics drivers strategically

Use the GPU manufacturer’s official driver channel and install a stable driver if your current one is old or a game has a relevant fix. Restart and rerun the same test. A new driver can help a particular title but can also cause a regression. If performance became worse immediately after an update, compare with the previous known-good driver where possible. Save a rollback path and avoid updating just before a critical play session. Use clean installation or driver cleanup when ordinary installation does not resolve corruption, crashes, or conflicts—not as a routine FPS ritual.

Vendor features may have narrow support. For example, Intel Application Optimization is limited to selected processors, operating systems, and titles (Intel Application Optimization requirements). Intel’s precompiled shader distribution also depends on supported Intel graphics, drivers, games, Steam, and other prerequisites (Intel precompiled shader information).

Fix stutter without chasing a higher average

Let shaders finish compiling

First-run stutter or pauses after a game or driver update can come from shader compilation. Allow the game’s shader preparation to finish before judging performance. Shader caches normally reduce repeated compilation; AMD describes the cache as storing frequently used shaders to reduce repeat work (AMD shader-cache guidance). Clearing a cache is a troubleshooting step for suspected corruption, not a routine optimization, and can make the next launch or play session stutter while shaders rebuild.

Check frame times, memory, and background activity

A high average FPS can coexist with poor 1% lows or irregular frame times. Look for memory pressure, disk activity, downloads, recording, overlays, and temperature changes during the actual hitch. If only one game is affected, test its renderer option (such as DX11 versus DX12, if offered) and game-specific settings separately.

Use an FPS cap when stability matters more than a peak

An FPS cap can reduce heat and power use, smooth frame pacing, or keep a game inside a display’s variable-refresh range. It is useful when the system already exceeds the display refresh rate, when frame rates fluctuate, or when heat causes throttling. Choose a target your system can sustain relative to the display rather than applying one universal number. A cap does not increase maximum FPS.

Changes to avoid

  • Do not disable Windows services indiscriminately; it can break updates, networking, security, audio, launchers, or anti-cheat.
  • Avoid registry hacks, timer tweaks, unknown debloat scripts, and “FPS booster” utilities. Their results are inconsistent and they can complicate troubleshooting.
  • Do not use unsafe BIOS, voltage, fan, overclocking, or undervolting changes as general fixes.
  • Do not assume that High performance mode, HAGS, or disabling every overlay helps every PC.
  • Do not treat a larger displayed FPS number as proof of better responsiveness; frame pacing, latency, tearing, and artifacts matter too.

Retest and keep only improvements
