Not on its own, according to Microsoft’s announcement. In July 2021, Microsoft said the combined Xbox Series X|S was its fastest-selling Xbox generation to that point. It did not disclose a Series X-only worldwide unit total, so headlines claiming a separate global sales record for Series X overstate what Microsoft announced.
What Microsoft actually announced
On July 27, 2021, during Microsoft’s fiscal 2021 fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella said Xbox Series X and Series S were the company’s “fastest selling consoles ever.” He said the two consoles together had sold more, at that point, than any previous Xbox generation. The statement was comparative; it did not give a worldwide unit count. Read the earnings-call transcript.
The distinction matters: “fastest-selling” describes sales pace over a period, not necessarily the largest lifetime sales total. Microsoft did not say that Series X alone outsold every earlier Xbox, nor that the Series X|S generation had become the best-selling Xbox over its full life.

The consoles launched on November 10, 2020. Three days later, Xbox called the debut “the biggest launch in Xbox history.” Its retrospective highlighted activity and Game Pass connection figures, rather than publishing console-unit sales:

- Players played 3,594 games during the launch period, according to Xbox.
- Xbox said 70% of Series X|S consoles were connected to new or existing Xbox Game Pass members. That does not mean 70% of buyers newly subscribed.
Those measures describe engagement and membership attachment, not a count of consoles sold. Xbox’s launch retrospective explains the basis for its “biggest launch” wording.
Why Series X and Series S must be counted together
Microsoft’s record claim referred to the pair, often styled Xbox Series X|S. The consoles arrived on the same date, but were distinct products with different launch prices and positioning:

These are historical U.S. launch prices, not current retail prices. Microsoft’s launch announcement and hardware fact sheet identify both models and their launch pricing. Since the performance claim combines them, it cannot establish how much of the result came from either model individually.
What the revenue figures do—and do not—show
Microsoft reported that Xbox hardware revenue rose 172% year over year in fiscal 2021’s fourth quarter, attributing the increase to higher prices and higher console volume associated with the Series X|S launches. Its annual filing reported a 92% increase in Xbox hardware revenue for the fiscal-year comparison. These are revenue measures, not percentage increases in units sold, and they are not Series X-only figures. Microsoft’s FY2021 Q4 results and annual filing provide the financial context.

Did Microsoft disclose worldwide Series X sales?
Not in the cited July 2021 announcement or earnings-call transcript. Microsoft made a qualitative claim about the combined Series X|S generation’s sales pace, but those materials do not provide a Series X-only global unit total. Microsoft’s launch announcement described the consoles as available worldwide, but that does not turn the later record claim into a published worldwide unit count. Any separately reported estimate from a market tracker or analyst should be identified as an estimate and assessed according to its date and methodology, not attributed to Microsoft.
