Valve has already made SteamOS usable beyond the Steam Deck, but it has not officially supported every handheld or announced open licensing for all manufacturers. As of August 16, 2026, Valve lists the Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Lenovo Legion Go S as supported devices; several other handhelds, including the Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally models, remain in beta compatibility.
What “official rollout” means
SteamOS availability is not a single yes-or-no status. A recovery image can be downloadable, a device can be listed as beta-compatible, and a manufacturer can sell a product with SteamOS without Valve opening the operating system to every hardware maker. Those are different milestones.
- Installable: Valve provides a recovery image and instructions that can be used on non-Deck hardware.
- Beta-compatible: Valve identifies hardware that may work, while compatibility remains incomplete.
- Officially supported: Valve lists the device in its supported category.
- Commercial SteamOS hardware: A manufacturer sells a SteamOS device, such as Lenovo’s Legion Go S.
- Broad OEM licensing: Manufacturers can generally ship SteamOS on their own products under a formal program. Valve has not announced this kind of unrestricted licensing.
Valve’s support page is the clearest current distinction between supported hardware and beta compatibility.
Which handhelds does Valve support?
Officially supported devices
Valve’s support listing names the Steam Deck, Steam Machine and Lenovo Legion Go S as supported “Powered by SteamOS” devices. The Legion Go S is the important third-party precedent: Lenovo’s product specifications list SteamOS as an operating-system option.

Devices listed for beta compatibility
Valve lists the Lenovo Legion Go, ASUS ROG Ally, ASUS ROG Ally X, other AMD-powered handhelds and AMD discrete graphics cards under beta compatibility. That classification is not a guarantee that every feature on every model works correctly. A handheld might boot and run games while still having problems with controls, audio, sleep, firmware tools or power management.
Legion Go 2 and other devices receiving improvements in SteamOS release notes should not automatically be treated as officially supported. Valve’s support category, rather than a mention in a beta changelog, determines whether a device is listed as supported.
Why SteamOS 3.8 signals a wider effort
Valve’s SteamOS 3.8 release notes describe a broader technical push than a one-off image for a rival handheld. They include improved compatibility with recent Intel and AMD platforms, better video-memory management for discrete graphics, support for more UEFI firmware, and broader power-button handling.

The notes also describe controller and device-specific work across OneXPlayer, GPD, Anbernic, OrangePi, Lenovo Legion Go and Legion Go 2 hardware, as well as ASUS ROG Xbox Ally support. Other changes address rotated displays, motion sensors, OLED color issues and SD-card reliability. Legion Go 2 receives controller and system firmware update support, while charge limiting is described as preliminary for Legion Go, Go S and Go 2. These are meaningful signs of platform expansion, but device-specific or preliminary fixes are not the same as a finished, uniform support commitment.
Valve’s news index lists SteamOS 3.8.16 as released to all users on July 16, 2026, and shows later 3.8 beta builds, including 3.8.24 Beta on July 17. Features in beta or Preview notes should not be assumed to be in the stable channel unless the individual release note says so.
Installing SteamOS on a non-Deck handheld
Valve provides a recovery process for compatible hardware. It requires a USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity; preparing the drive formats it, and re-imaging the handheld can erase its contents and existing operating system. Back up anything important before beginning.

- Download Valve’s SteamOS recovery image from the official recovery instructions.
- Write the image to an 8 GB-or-larger USB drive. Valve recommends Rufus on Windows and Balena Etcher on macOS and Linux.
- On most non-Deck devices, disable Secure Boot in BIOS/UEFI before restoring from USB. The exact setting and navigation vary by model; Valve provides examples for Legion Go, Legion Go S and ROG Ally.
- Boot the handheld from the recovery drive using the model-specific boot-menu procedure.
- Choose the recovery action that matches your goal. “Re-image Device” erases user data, games, applications and operating systems. “Repair SteamOS” attempts to preserve games and personal content, but preservation is not guaranteed.
A bootable recovery image establishes that installation is possible; it does not guarantee that the device’s hardware, firmware or games will work as they do on a Steam Deck.

What to expect by device
Lenovo Legion Go S
This is the clearest third-party choice for someone who wants a handheld officially sold with SteamOS. It is on Valve’s supported list, and Lenovo’s specifications document SteamOS as an operating-system option.
Lenovo Legion Go and Legion Go 2
The Legion Go is listed as beta-compatible. Valve’s 3.8 notes describe additional controller, firmware and charge-limit work for Legion Go 2, but that progress does not by itself make the newer model an officially supported device.

ASUS ROG Ally and Ally X
Both appear in Valve’s beta-compatibility category. Owners should expect a less predictable experience than on a supported device, especially if they depend on all vendor controls and utilities.
Other handhelds and desktop graphics
Valve’s beta category includes other AMD handhelds and AMD discrete graphics cards, while 3.8 notes mention work on a range of additional manufacturers’ devices. Neither the broad category nor those individual fixes mean every AMD handheld or desktop configuration is supported. Intel compatibility improvements likewise do not establish complete support for every Intel handheld.

SteamOS or Windows?
SteamOS is designed around Steam’s controller-first Gaming Mode, which can feel more natural on a handheld than navigating a conventional desktop. Steam Cloud and suspend/resume are also central to the console-like experience. But non-Deck support is uneven, and owners may need to troubleshoot hardware-specific behavior.

Windows remains the safer choice for Game Pass, Microsoft Store titles, many third-party launchers and Windows-only utilities. It can also be easier for accessing a manufacturer’s firmware tools and control software. On SteamOS, Proton compatibility varies by game; anti-cheat systems, mods, overlays, external displays, HDR and VRR can all introduce title- or device-specific complications.
Consider switching only if your device is on Valve’s compatibility list, you are comfortable restoring Windows if needed, and the games and tools you rely on work under Linux. If those conditions are not met, keeping Windows is the lower-risk option.
Is Bazzite a better alternative?
Bazzite is a Linux gaming distribution that may suit users seeking broader community hardware coverage or more customization. Its official documentation covers its own setup and support. Bazzite is not SteamOS, is not Valve-certified, and does not demonstrate that Valve supports a given handheld; it brings a separate configuration and troubleshooting path.
What Valve’s expansion could mean
More SteamOS hardware could give Valve greater influence over the handheld interface and make Steam the default storefront on more devices, putting pressure on Windows and hardware vendors to improve their gaming experience. Wider hardware variety also raises the support burden: manufacturers have to maintain device-specific firmware and controls, while Valve must decide how much variation it can support without fragmenting the experience.
The evidence shows Valve has crossed the first threshold—SteamOS is installable and its compatibility work extends well beyond the Deck. The unresolved step is a broader, clearly defined manufacturer program with stable device-specific support. A partnership with Lenovo and a growing beta list are evidence of expansion, not proof of open-ended licensing.
