Xbox did not launch a public mobile-game store in July 2024. Microsoft announced a web-first storefront on May 9, 2024, with a July target, but no standalone marketplace appeared on that schedule. Reports in 2026 disagreed over whether the project was cancelled or merely delayed, and Xbox’s current mobile pages still do not confirm that the announced store is live.
What Xbox actually announced
At the Bloomberg Technology Summit on May 9, 2024, Xbox president Sarah Bond said Microsoft planned to launch a mobile-game store in July. The first version was intended to be a website rather than an iOS or Android application. Coverage from GameDeveloper and MobileSyrup described a web-first marketplace designed to work across devices and countries without depending on Apple’s App Store or Google Play.
The announcement did not establish a final product name, public URL, catalogue, payment system, revenue split, launch regions, or a confirmed method for installing native iPhone and Android games. It described a direction and a launch window, not a fully specified consumer product.
Expected opening catalogue
Microsoft said first-party mobile games would lead the catalogue. Reporting identified King properties such as Candy Crush and Mojang’s Minecraft as examples. Activision Blizzard mobile titles, including Call of Duty: Mobile, were discussed less consistently, so they should not be treated as confirmed day-one products. Third-party publishers were expected to become possible later.

Why Microsoft chose the web first
A browser storefront can be opened directly on iOS, Android, Windows and other platforms without first being approved as a competing native store. Bond’s stated rationale was broader access across devices and countries and independence from closed mobile-store policies, as reported by GameDeveloper.
- Distribution control: Microsoft could present its own catalogue and account experience without waiting for Apple or Google store review.
- Customer and merchandising control: A direct site could manage sign-in, promotions, rewards and purchase history.
- Potentially different economics: Analysts commonly interpreted the plan as a way to reduce platform dependence and possibly avoid some store fees, but Microsoft did not publish final transaction terms.
- Cross-platform reach: One website could serve multiple operating systems, although browser features and payment rules would not be identical everywhere.
“Bypassing app stores” therefore describes the planned web distribution and checkout route. It does not mean that an iPhone user would automatically be able to install every Xbox-owned mobile game directly from a browser.

The announcement left the technical model open. Several arrangements were possible:

- Web checkout for an installed game: A game downloaded from Apple or Google could use an Xbox website for currency or item purchases, with the game account receiving the entitlement.
- Catalogue and account hub: The site could handle discovery, identity, rewards and ownership while installation remained on an existing platform store.
- Progressive web experience: The storefront could behave like an app shortcut without being distributed as a native store application.
- Alternative Android distribution: A later phase might have explored native Android delivery or sideloading where local rules permit it.
- Cloud gaming: Games could run on Microsoft’s servers and stream to a browser. That is Xbox Cloud Gaming, a separate service, not proof of a mobile-game storefront.
Microsoft never confirmed which model would apply to each proposed title. In particular, the announcement did not promise direct browser installation of native iPhone games.
What happened to the July 2024 launch
The public launch did not occur on the announced timetable. By late July 2024, Xbox had not published a launch announcement, and Windows Central reported that the store had not appeared publicly.

The fairest description is delayed, unlaunched or unresolved. A 404 test URL shows that an endpoint was removed or unavailable; it does not prove that every internal project was abandoned. Conversely, reports that Microsoft still wanted a store do not prove a public release.

What Xbox offers on mobile today
Xbox mobile app
The official Xbox mobile app lets users explore Game Pass, buy Xbox console and PC games and add-ons, manage their library and account, chat, view achievements, share captures and remotely install games to a console. Microsoft lists compatibility with iOS 15.1 or later and Android 8.0 or later, with regional, device and version differences possible.

Xbox Cloud Gaming
For cloud play, Xbox directs mobile users to Xbox.com/play in a browser. The official Xbox mobile page says a Game Pass subscription is required and lists Android phones and tablets running Android 12 or later, plus iPhone and iPad devices running iOS/iPadOS 14.4 or later, subject to current regional and compatibility rules.

Remote Play
Xbox Remote Play streams games installed on the user’s own console to a mobile device. It is different from cloud gaming and does not provide access to a mobile-game store.
Why a web storefront is difficult
- Discoverability: A website lacks the default visibility of the App Store or Google Play.
- Checkout friction: Users may need a browser sign-in, separate payment flow and a return to the game.
- Entitlements: Purchases do not automatically follow a player between platform accounts unless the game’s identity system supports it.
- Refunds and fraud: Microsoft and publishers would need customer-service, chargeback and abuse systems separate from existing stores.
- iOS limits: A web checkout does not itself create a native iPhone installation channel.
- Publisher cost: Developers would have to support another commerce, analytics, support and item-delivery system.
- Unclear savings: No final Xbox revenue share or consumer pricing policy was disclosed.
The same distinction matters for players: browsing a catalogue, purchasing currency, installing software, streaming a game and remotely playing a console title are separate functions.
What the announcement means for players and publishers
For players, the 2024 headline should not be read as evidence that a new Xbox mobile marketplace is available. The practical choices today are the Xbox app for console and PC purchases, Xbox Cloud Gaming through a browser where Game Pass and regional support apply, or Remote Play from a personal console.

For publishers, Microsoft’s proposal represented a possible additional route to customers, but its value would depend on adoption, account linking, payment reliability, discoverability and clear economics. None of those outcomes was established by the announcement, and no public launch has demonstrated them.
