There is no objective, final ranking of the best video games ever made. This list weighs lasting influence, design innovation, cultural impact, critical standing and how well a game holds up as an experience. It spans genres and eras, and ranks each game on its own contribution—not simply on a franchise’s fame.
How this list ranks the best games
“Best” depends on what a ranking values. GamesRadar+ names influence, innovation, legacy, social impact, critical reception and enduring playability as criteria for its own list. It also describes a process combining expert shortlisting, audience voting for its top 20 and senior editorial selection for the remainder. Its editorial team acknowledges that “There’s always a degree of subjective interpretation with these sorts of endeavors, so that’s why we opened up the process.”

This ranking uses those criteria as a guide, with lasting design and playability carrying the most weight: a game should matter historically, but it should also offer something compelling to play. Cultural reach and critical regard help distinguish landmark works; they do not automatically make a game a better fit for every player. To make room for different kinds of achievement, the list includes role-playing games, platformers, adventures, strategy games, shooters and more. It generally avoids stacking multiple entries from the same series when one game represents its contribution particularly well.

Aggregated rankings provide a useful check, not a verdict. Acclaimed Video Games says its collection brings together 1,400 recommended games across 913 critic lists from 142 publications; its page was updated March 25, 2026. In the retrieved snapshot, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ranked first, with Wii U and Switch among its listed platforms. Those counts describe that site’s collected lists, and its top position is an aggregation result—not proof of a universal winner. The Greatest Games likewise describes weighing the quality, credibility and scope of critics’, developers’ and players’ lists, a different method from either editorial selection or audience voting.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
A landmark open-world adventure built around curiosity and player choice. Its climbable terrain, systemic interactions and willingness to let players find their own solutions make exploration the core reward. Acclaimed Video Games placed it first in the aggregation snapshot updated March 25, 2026; that position is one strong signal, not an objective crown.

A cohesive adventure that made a three-dimensional world feel navigable and dramatic. Its dungeons, musical ideas and time-spanning structure became touchstones for action-adventure design.

Why other all-time lists differ
A critic ranking, an audience vote and an aggregation of published lists measure different things. Expert panels can make room for historical context; audience voting reflects the preferences of the voters who participate; editorial selections can balance a list’s genres and eras; aggregators depend on which publications and lists they include and how they weight them. The Greatest Games describes its approach as weighing list quality, credibility and scope, while Acclaimed Video Games presents a dated collection of critic lists. Neither method removes judgment from the result.

That is a useful cross-era principle: include a sequel when it makes a distinct contribution, rather than treating franchise popularity as a reason to reserve several places. Likewise, a game’s historical significance and its ease of access today are related but separate questions. Older games may be essential to understanding the medium even when their controls or interfaces feel dated; a ranking should not disguise that trade-off.
What makes a video game truly great?
There is no single test. A great game can transform a genre, create a new kind of social play, express an unmistakable artistic vision, or remain enjoyable long after its original hardware generation. The strongest all-time choices tend to do more than one of those things: they offer a compelling experience and leave a recognizable mark on what games could be.
