A HyperOS update reported on October 29, 2025, expanded the rear display on the China-market Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. It added five live wallpapers, animated profile images, a rear-screen translation mode, and two small games—Plants vs. Zombies and Snowman Sokoban. The rollout was gradual, so availability depends on the phone’s software build, region, ROM and Xiaomi account.
This is a historical 2025 update rather than a new August 2026 announcement. The original report is documented by Gizchina, with independent coverage from PhoneArena.
What the October 2025 update added
Animated profile images
The rear panel could show moving profile imagery instead of only a static portrait or clock-style screen. Bright-themed templates were expected to arrive in stages, with some reporting pointing to mid-November 2025. The available coverage does not confirm unrestricted video uploads, supported file formats or automatic cropping, so this should be treated as a Xiaomi-controlled personalization feature.
Rear-screen conversation translation
The reported mode lets one person speak Chinese on the main display while translated text appears on the rear screen for the other person to read. That example does not establish universal language coverage, fully two-way conversation, or offline operation.

Five live wallpapers
Five Xiaomi-supplied animated wallpapers were reported across technology, nature and pet themes. They are separate from animated profile photos and from a later live-photo/video wallpaper experiment.
Two small games
- Plants vs. Zombies
- Snowman Sokoban
These are purpose-built rear-screen experiences, not evidence that ordinary Android games can run on the small panel.

Compatible phones and display size
The update was reported for the Xiaomi 17 Pro and Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, both of which integrate a secondary display into the camera area. Launch coverage describes the panel as roughly 2.6 inches; a technical comparison lists approximately 2.66 inches on the Pro and 2.86 inches on the Pro Max (Android Central; CMBI specification sheet). “About 2.7 inches” is the most useful general description.
At the time of the October coverage, both phones were China-exclusive. Hardware ownership outside China therefore does not guarantee the same apps, languages, update schedule or Entertainment Box catalog.

How to find the games
Coverage says the games were distributed through Xiaomi’s Entertainment Box app store. Xiaomi has not been documented here with a universal settings path or stable build number, so use the following practical checks rather than assuming an exact menu label:
- Install the latest HyperOS update offered for the Xiaomi 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max.
- Open Entertainment Box, or its corresponding Xiaomi app-store entry.
- Check for updates to the store itself and refresh its available content.
- Install the two rear-screen games if they are listed for your handset and region.
- Open the rear-display controls and select the game.
If nothing appears, the phone may still be on an earlier build, Entertainment Box may be outdated, the ROM or region may be unsupported, or the staged rollout may not have reached that account. Xiaomi may also have changed or withdrawn a listing. Sideloading unknown APKs is risky because rear-screen functions can depend on proprietary Xiaomi services.

What the rear display is—and is not
The rear screen is a compact secondary interface for camera previews, glanceable information, decoration and simple interactions. Its camera cutout and limited size make it poorly suited to complex controls, long sessions or productivity. A general Android application cannot be assumed to support it, and launch mentions of dynamic flight, train-ticket and delivery information do not prove universal third-party notification support (Android Central).

The optional Retro Game Case
The software update does not require an accessory. Xiaomi’s separately reported Retro Game Case adds a D-pad, four face buttons and a built-in 200mAh battery for both Pro models. Coverage also named rear-screen titles such as Angry Birds 2 and Snake (Pocket Tactics).

The case can make short games easier to control, but it is not a general-purpose controller for the full Android library. A reported October 2025 price was €67/$77; that is historical secondary-source pricing, not a verified August 2026 price or guarantee of availability outside China.
Import and regional considerations
- China-ROM software can differ in Google-service integration, language options, notifications and account requirements.
- Entertainment Box content and update timing can vary by region and ROM.
- Carrier bands, warranty coverage and accessory sourcing should be checked independently before importing.
- A global-looking hardware listing does not prove that the rear-screen features are available on every regional firmware.
What happened next
In December 2025, Gizmochina reported an internal HyperOS 3.0.34.0 test build with an interactive “Sugar Cube” feature supporting live photos and video as rear-screen wallpaper. That was a later test-build development, not part of the five-wallpaper October rollout, and should not be treated as a confirmed stable release for every owner.
Does the update make the rear screen useful?
It makes the panel more than a clock or selfie preview: owners get additional personalization, a practical demonstration of social translation and two immediately understandable mini-games. Its limitations remain substantial, however. There are only two named games, the display is physically small, the accessory costs extra, and China-market software can complicate imported phones.
