Fortnite can crash because of damaged game files, launcher or anti-cheat problems, a graphics-driver or rendering issue, background software, or unstable PC hardware. Start by identifying what “crash” means: Fortnite closing to desktop is different from a black screen, blue screen, full restart, or power-off. If Windows itself freezes, restarts, or shuts down, troubleshoot the PC’s stability—not just Fortnite.
First, identify what kind of crash you have

A crash on a “Connecting” screen is not necessarily an internet fault; Fortnite can fail locally before joining a match. Likewise, Easy Anti-Cheat appearing near an error in a log does not prove it caused the failure.
Check whether your PC meets Fortnite’s requirements
Epic’s listed PC requirements include the following tiers. Requirements can change, so consult Epic’s current Fortnite requirements for the applicable version.

Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee stable play at high settings. Background applications, heat, failing memory, or a driver issue can still cause crashes. An “out of video memory” message also does not automatically mean the GPU lacks the stated VRAM: Epic lists corrupted files, driver problems, graphics settings, and rendering mode among issues to investigate. Try these fixes in order
Change one thing at a time and test Fortnite after each change. Note the exact error, where the crash occurs, whether other games fail, and whether the problem began after a Fortnite, Windows, or graphics-driver update. That information helps separate a game-specific fault from a PC-wide one.
- Restart and install normal updates. Restart Windows, then check for updates to Windows, Fortnite, and Epic Games Launcher. Update the graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel’s official site for your GPU and Windows version. Install motherboard chipset drivers from your PC or motherboard manufacturer when relevant. Avoid third-party driver-updater utilities.
- Verify Fortnite’s files. In Epic Games Launcher, open Library, find Fortnite, click the three dots beside it, choose Manage, then Verify. Wait for validation to finish before launching. Epic says this checks for damaged or different files and repairs them without affecting saved data. The linked verification procedure is available here.
- Clear the Epic Games Launcher cache. Exit Fortnite and quit Epic Games Launcher from the system tray. Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, then openEpicGamesLauncherSaved. Deletewebcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430if present. Restart the launcher. This clears launcher cache, not Fortnite’s saved game data. Follow Epic’s cache instructions. - Disable overlays and background apps for a test. Temporarily close Discord overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA or AMD overlays, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, screen-recording software, RGB or peripheral utilities, and other hardware-monitoring tools. Epic includes background applications in its PC crash troubleshooting. If the crash stops, re-enable programs one at a time to identify a conflict. Do not permanently disable antivirus or Windows security; if you test a security conflict, keep the test temporary and restore protection afterward.
- Test Performance Mode and lower graphics load. Epic says Performance Mode may help with DirectX 12 crashes, freezing, or black screens. In Epic Games Launcher, open Settings, scroll to Fortnite, enable Additional Command Line Arguments, and try
-d3d12 -es31. Then, in Fortnite, open the main menu, choose Settings, go to Video, set Quality Presets to Low, and test. Set 3D Resolution to 100%; if stable, raise settings one at a time. Performance Mode can reduce visual quality or features. Fortnite’s options and command-line behavior can change, so check Epic’s graphics guidance before relying on a launch argument. - Make sure a laptop uses its dedicated GPU. On NVIDIA systems, open NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings, select Fortnite, and choose the high-performance GPU. On AMD systems, open Radeon graphics settings, find Switchable Graphics or Graphics Settings, select Fortnite, and set it to High Performance. Menu labels may vary by driver version; Epic’s graphics troubleshooting page documents both paths.
- Clear shader cache only for shader or DirectX 12 symptoms. If Fortnite repeatedly recompiles shaders or has severe DirectX 12 stutter, Epic documents clearing the relevant vendor cache, including NVIDIA
DXCacheand AMDDxCache. The first game session afterward may stutter as shaders rebuild. This is a targeted troubleshooting step, not a universal crash fix; use Epic’s DirectX 12 cache instructions. - Repair Easy Anti-Cheat through official tools if its error appears. Note the exact error text and follow Epic’s or Easy Anti-Cheat’s documented repair process. EAC has support categories for installation, unknown file versions, security violations, Windows services, compatibility, and troubleshooting at its official support page. Do not delete anti-cheat
.sysfiles, download replacement files from unofficial sites, or permanently disable Windows security. - Check whether Fortnite’s settings file is read-only. Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and openFortniteGameSavedConfigWindowsClient. Right-clickGameUserSettings.ini, choose Properties, clear Read-only, and apply. A read-only file can stop graphics changes from sticking. Epic documents this in its graphics troubleshooting guide.
Match the fix to the failure
Fortnite closes before opening or during startup
Start with verification and launcher-cache clearing. If the game fails around “Initializing,” “Waiting for game,” or the anti-cheat splash, capture the exact Easy Anti-Cheat message and use its official repair guidance. A security tool, overlay, damaged local configuration, or recent update can also be involved; a network label on screen does not establish that the connection is the cause.

It crashes while loading into a match
Loading can increase graphics and memory demand. Test Performance Mode, lower texture quality, close GPU-using applications such as browsers or recording software, and confirm the dedicated GPU is selected on a laptop. If the crash follows extended play, check CPU and GPU temperatures and return any GPU, CPU, or RAM overclock or undervolt to stock settings.

“Out of video memory” appears
Follow Epic’s sequence: verify files, lower resolution and texture settings, close other GPU-using apps, test Performance Mode, update the GPU driver, and confirm the intended GPU is in use. The error alone cannot establish that buying a GPU is necessary.

Black screen or DirectX 12-only crash
Try Performance Mode, updated graphics drivers, lower settings, and disabled overlays. If the issue includes repeated shader compilation or severe DX12 stutter, use Epic’s vendor-specific shader-cache instructions. Do not assume an old DirectX 11 launch flag is supported or will fix a current Fortnite build; Epic’s linked current graphics guidance is the safer reference.
The whole PC restarts, shuts off, freezes, or blue-screens
Stop repeatedly launching Fortnite until you have checked system stability. Reset overclocks and undervolts to stock, check temperatures and cooling, and see whether another demanding game produces the same failure. Use Windows Reliability Monitor and Event Viewer to inspect the time of the failure for display-driver resets, BugCheck, WHEA hardware errors, or Kernel-Power events. A Kernel-Power event commonly records an unexpected shutdown; by itself it does not identify the cause. Record any blue-screen stop code and inspect the crash dump if you are comfortable doing so.

- Test RAM and storage using reliable diagnostic tools or the PC manufacturer’s guidance.
- Check that the GPU is seated and its power cables are secure; an immediate power loss can implicate power delivery, but does not prove the PSU is faulty.
- Install BIOS and chipset updates only from the PC or motherboard manufacturer and follow its instructions. If you are unsure, use manufacturer support rather than experimenting.
- If several games or Windows itself crash, prioritize hardware, driver, and Windows diagnostics over reinstalling Fortnite.
Easy Anti-Cheat can appear in a crash chain without being the root cause. A kernel driver may expose a conflict or instability elsewhere; a full restart or blue screen needs broader diagnosis.

When to reinstall Fortnite or test another drive
Reinstalling is more disruptive than verifying files and does not necessarily remove local configuration, launcher cache, graphics drivers, anti-cheat conflicts, or hardware faults. If Epic’s earlier troubleshooting steps fail, its extended guidance includes reinstalling the game or launcher, trying another drive, checking the drive for errors, and removing the local Fortnite configuration folder. Read Epic’s full PC troubleshooting sequence before deleting local data. Back up or understand any settings you need to preserve; deleting configuration can reset local preferences.

If the problem began immediately after a Fortnite update, a game regression or changed rendering behavior is possible, but a timing link is not confirmation. Check Epic’s official support channels for a known issue. If it began after a graphics-driver update, consider a clean installation or rollback only for the correct GPU and Windows version, using the manufacturer’s official driver and release information.
When to stop and get hardware support
Contact your PC builder or component manufacturer if multiple games crash, Windows fails outside Fortnite, the system powers off under load, RAM or storage tests report errors, WHEA errors recur, or temperatures remain abnormal after checking airflow. Do not buy more RAM, a new GPU, an SSD, or cooling equipment until a diagnostic establishes the relevant limitation: purchases will not fix corrupted files, anti-cheat conflicts, unstable memory, or a failing power supply by assumption.
