The reported $50 increase applied to the SteamOS Legion Go S with the entry-level Ryzen Z2 Go: its expected U.S. starting price rose from $549.99 to $599.99 ahead of its May 25, 2025 arrival. That put it $50 above the Steam Deck OLED 512GB’s then-$549 price. The comparison is now historical: Valve raised official U.S. Steam Deck OLED prices to $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB on May 27, 2026. Lenovo’s cited U.S. listings do not establish a reliably current Legion Go S price, so today’s value depends on the exact configuration and live offer.
What the $50 increase covered
Tom’s Guide reported that the SteamOS Legion Go S entry price moved from an expected $549.99 to $599.99 before the handheld arrived on May 25, 2025. The report concerns the SteamOS model, not a blanket increase across every Legion Go S. The SteamOS Z2 Go was the direct comparison with Steam Deck OLED because both offered a Steam-focused, controller-first interface; Windows versions are a different proposition. The report did not establish Lenovo’s reason for the change, so there is no substantiated explanation to attach to it. Tom’s Guide’s launch-period report gives the original and revised figures.
That launch-era gap mattered: at $599.99, the entry Legion offered a larger, faster-refresh display and USB4, while the $549 Deck OLED offered an OLED panel, trackpads and Valve’s tightly integrated handheld experience. Whether those trade-offs justified the extra $50 depended on what the buyer valued.

Specifications and configuration options are listed by Lenovo for the Z2 Go entry model, Lenovo’s Legion Go S product page and its technical specification sheet. Valve lists Deck specifications on its Steam Deck page and technical and compatibility page.
More capable hardware does not guarantee better value
The Z2 Go is a newer platform than the Deck OLED’s custom APU, and comparative coverage has found it can outperform the Deck’s APU in suitable workloads. That is not a universal frame-rate promise: results depend on the game, power limit, settings and resolution. The Legion’s 1920×1200 panel has more than twice as many pixels as the Deck’s 1280×800 screen, so running games near native resolution asks more of its graphics hardware. A fair benchmark needs the same game, comparable power limits and settings, and the same rendered resolution.
Do not confuse the entry Z2 Go with the Legion Go S Z1 Extreme. Lenovo’s Z1 Extreme configuration has eight Zen 4 CPU cores/16 threads and Radeon 780M RDNA 3 graphics, compared with the Z2 Go’s four cores/eight threads and RDNA 2 graphics. It is a different performance tier, not evidence of what the $599.99 entry model can do. Screen, battery and portability are different trade-offs
Legion Go S: size and refresh rate
The 8-inch IPS display gives games, menus and desktop interfaces more room, and 120Hz with VRR can make supported games feel smoother. Its 16:10, 1920×1200 resolution is also useful for general PC-style visibility. But a sharper, larger display can demand more rendering work and power, particularly if a game runs at native resolution.
Steam Deck OLED: contrast and HDR
The Deck’s 7.4-inch OLED panel provides OLED contrast, true blacks and HDR support. Its 90Hz ceiling is below the Legion’s 120Hz, but its 800p resolution is less demanding for the APU. The smaller screen also makes the Deck the more compact choice, though the published weight figures are starting or listed weights and should not be treated as a complete measure of comfort for every user.
Battery capacity is not runtime
The Legion has a 55.5Wh battery versus 50Wh in the Deck OLED, but that difference alone does not establish which lasts longer. Actual play time varies with the game, brightness, refresh-rate setting, frame cap, power limit, operating system and render resolution. Valve’s estimate for the Deck OLED is 3–12 hours depending on content; Lenovo’s cited page does not provide a directly comparable gameplay-runtime range.

Controls and SteamOS can decide the purchase
Trackpads versus a conventional gamepad
The Steam Deck’s two trackpads, rear programmable buttons and Steam Input are more than extra controls: they help with mouse-oriented games, strategy and management titles, desktop navigation, and games whose controller support is awkward. If those uses are part of the plan, losing the trackpads is a meaningful trade-off.

Players who mostly use controller-friendly games may prefer its familiar controls and larger grips. Lenovo offers customizable controller software on supported models, but that does not replace the Deck’s dual-trackpad layout.
SteamOS is polished, not a compatibility guarantee
The SteamOS Legion Go S is not simply a Windows handheld with Steam installed: Lenovo positions it around a gamepad-friendly interface, Steam library access, Cloud, Chat, Game Recording, quick suspend/resume and desktop access. That makes it the closer software rival to the Steam Deck. It does not mean every PC game works identically. Compatibility varies with Proton support, anti-cheat systems, launchers, codecs and multiplayer restrictions. Check the individual title’s Deck Verified status and current compatibility notes before buying for a specific game.

The Windows Legion Go S may better suit people who need non-Steam launchers or Windows-specific software, but it is a different experience, with more setup and a less console-like interface. Buyers should decide whether they need Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, Battle.net or a particular anti-cheat multiplayer game before choosing the operating system; SteamOS should not be assumed to support all of them.

Both product families offer 512GB and 1TB configurations, and both support microSD expansion. For a large library of modern PC games, 512GB can feel tight once system files and other storage use are accounted for. Compare the actual included capacity and price of the SKU on sale, not just the maximum offered.

Lenovo’s specification sheet identifies a single M.2 SSD slot and soldered memory. The SSD and microSD options do not make the Legion’s RAM upgradeable: choose the memory configuration you need at purchase. Consult the manufacturer’s repair and warranty guidance before replacing an SSD; upgradeability does not by itself establish that a procedure is equally easy or warranty-neutral on every model.

Historical price verdict versus current buying math
At the 2025 launch-period prices

At the historical $599.99-versus-$549 comparison, the Legion made sense for buyers who prioritized screen size, refresh rate, connectivity and the newer Z2 Go platform. The Deck OLED was the safer pick for Steam-first players who valued OLED, trackpads, a lighter device and a more mature integrated handheld experience. Neither set of features made one a universal winner.

Valve said the Deck OLED hardware was unchanged with the price update and cited higher memory and storage costs. Its announcement is at Valve’s May 2026 news update. Those official prices change the comparison: the old $549 Deck price should not be used as the current reference. They do not, on their own, prove the Legion is a bargain; check the live price, exact operating system and configuration, and any retailer discount. Sale, open-box and regional prices can reverse the value calculation.
Which handheld should you buy?
Choose Steam Deck OLED for a Steam-first, controls-focused setup
- You mainly play Steam games and want a cohesive handheld interface.
- OLED contrast and HDR matter more to you than the Legion’s larger, faster IPS screen.
- You use trackpads for strategy, mouse-heavy games or desktop navigation.
- You prefer a lighter handheld, or find a discounted or open-box Deck at a price that beats competing offers.
Choose the Legion Go S Z2 Go if its screen and ports justify the price
- You want an 8-inch display, 120Hz refresh rate and VRR.
- You prefer a traditional gamepad layout and want USB4 connectivity.
- You value the newer platform and potential performance advantage, while understanding that game, power and resolution determine the result.
- You find the SteamOS entry model near or below its historical $599 launch-period price. That is a useful value trigger, not a guarantee that it is the best current deal.
Consider the Z1 Extreme only as a separate performance tier
The Z1 Extreme model is the Legion to assess if you specifically need its stronger integrated graphics, eight-core CPU or 32GB-memory configuration for demanding workloads. Compare its actual retail price with current alternatives rather than treating its performance as representative of the cheaper Z2 Go model.
Pause if you need broad Windows compatibility
If a particular Game Pass title, launcher or anti-cheat multiplayer game is essential, check its operating-system support before choosing either SteamOS device. A Windows Legion Go S may fit those requirements better, but it should be evaluated on its own price and setup trade-offs, not as though it were the SteamOS model that received the reported increase.
