Verdict: Buy the Razer Huntsman Elite only when it is well below its original US$199.99 price and you specifically want loud clicky switches, a full-size layout, dedicated media controls, a dial, and an illuminated wrist rest. Skip it at a premium, or if you need quiet typing, wireless operation, hot-swappable switches, adjustable actuation, Rapid Trigger, or broad non-Windows customization.
The Elite remains a distinctive and enjoyable keyboard, but its 1,000-Hz polling, fixed Razer Opto-Mechanical Purple switches, non-detachable cable, and aging software platform make it a legacy product rather than a modern performance leader.
What the Razer Huntsman Elite is
The Huntsman Elite (model RZ03-01870) is Razer’s original full-size Huntsman keyboard, launched in 2018 at US$199.99. It combines clicky optical switches with a number pad, three media buttons, a multifunction dial, per-key Chroma RGB, keyboard and wrist-rest underglow, and a magnetic leatherette wrist rest. It is not the later Huntsman V2, V3 Pro, V3 HE, or analog variants.
Razer still maintains a support page with documentation, firmware, and Synapse 4 guidance, although the Elite is not prominent in the current US Razer keyboard catalog. In 2026, availability is therefore more likely to mean used, old-stock, or third-party inventory than a normal current-generation purchase. See Razer’s support page before buying.

These figures come from Razer’s support material and manuals: the technical manual and the original quick-start documentation. The original documentation also described a two-year limited warranty, subject to regional policy and the age of the unit.
Typing and gaming feel
Loud, tactile Purple switches
The Purple switch has a clear tactile bump and a deliberate click. You hear both the click mechanism and the key bottoming out, so it is intrusive in an office, shared room, bedroom, voice chat, or microphone recording. People who enjoy crisp, audible feedback may find it satisfying; users seeking smooth linear or silent switches should avoid it.
Razer specifies a 45-gram actuation force and claims a 100-million-keystroke lifespan. That lifespan is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee of how an older second-hand keyboard will perform. Larger keys use a stabilizer-bar design intended to keep their motion consistent.

Optical does not automatically mean faster today
The optical actuation system was the Elite’s major technical distinction at launch. It reduces dependence on conventional metal contacts, but real-world advantage depends on the game, player, and competing keyboard. The Elite’s fixed actuation behavior and 1,000-Hz polling are ordinary by 2026 high-end standards. It remains perfectly serviceable for normal games, but it is not a Rapid Trigger or adjustable-actuation esports board.
Controls, wrist rest, and desk footprint
Dial and media keys
The upper-right multifunction dial is useful for volume and can be remapped in Synapse. Three dedicated media buttons sit beside it. Razer also provides dedicated controls for gaming mode, lighting, macro recording, and sleep-related functions. These controls are the strongest reason to choose the Elite over a newer keyboard with more advanced switches but fewer physical controls. Test every button and the dial on a used unit; worn encoders can skip or fail in one direction.
The wrist rest is part of the product
The wide magnetic leatherette wrist rest makes long sessions more comfortable for many users and carries its own RGB underglow. It also adds 90 mm of desk depth, bringing the complete keyboard to approximately 448 × 230 mm. The rest connects through proprietary pogo pins, so it is not a generic replacement part. Razer says both USB connectors should be connected for the complete lighting setup; a missing rest or failed lighting contact removes one of the Elite’s signature features.

Large and permanently wired
At 1,223 g before the wrist rest and 1,760.5 g with it, the keyboard is stable but not portable. The fixed braided cable cannot be replaced or routed like a detachable USB-C lead. Measure your desk before buying, particularly if you use a monitor stand or have limited front-to-back space.
RGB and Synapse 4 in 2026
Per-key Chroma, keyboard underglow, and wrist-rest underglow can display up to 16.8 million colors and synchronize with other Chroma devices. The lighting is visually elaborate, not a performance feature. Advanced effects, remapping, macros, dial assignments, and profile management depend on Razer software.
Razer’s current support page lists Synapse 4 for the Elite and provides firmware and setup instructions. Older independent testing found full customization was Windows-only under Synapse 3. Do not assume every older profile or function behaves identically in Synapse 4, and verify support for your operating system before purchase. Basic key input can work without full customization, but that is different from having complete feature parity. Independent testing and the current support listing are documented by RTINGS and Razer.

USB setup and firmware
The two USB connectors are a practical consideration. Connect both directly to the computer when using the full lighting and wrist-rest functionality. Razer recommends avoiding hubs; desktop users should try rear motherboard ports when detection or lighting is unreliable.
- Connect the keyboard directly to the computer, preferably without a hub.
- Connect both USB plugs for complete lighting and wrist-rest operation.
- Install or update Synapse, restart the PC, and select the Huntsman Elite when it appears.
- Configure assignments, macros, dial behavior, media controls, and lighting.
- Check Razer’s support page for firmware before diagnosing a fault.
The listed firmware updater is v1.23.00_r1, dated November 4, 2024, and addresses a problem where the keyboard could not type while Synapse was running. The documented process is to close Synapse and other applications, run the updater, connect the keyboard, choose Update, wait for completion, and select Close.
What is missing by modern standards
- No detachable USB-C cable, wireless mode, USB pass-through, or audio pass-through.
- No hot-swappable switch sockets.
- No adjustable actuation, Rapid Trigger, analog input, or Snap Tap.
- No 8,000-Hz polling option.
- No dedicated macro-key bank beyond programmable existing keys.
- A fixed clicky switch choice and an older keycap and switch ecosystem.
Razer’s current Huntsman V3 Pro products illustrate the generational gap with adjustable actuation, Rapid Trigger, analog input, detachable USB-C, and 1,000- or 8,000-Hz variants: Huntsman V3 Pro and Huntsman V3 Pro 8KHz.

Huntsman Elite versus current Razer alternatives

Used-buying checklist
Condition matters more than the 100-million-keystroke specification on a 2018-era keyboard. Before paying, verify:
- The model label says RZ03-01870.
- Every key registers repeatedly without chatter, missed inputs, or stuck modifiers.
- The spacebar, Shift, Enter, and other stabilized keys feel consistent.
- The dial turns smoothly through its full range and responds in both directions.
- All three media buttons work.
- Both USB connectors are recognized and the cable has no damage near the housing.
- Every lighting zone works, including the wrist-rest contacts.
- The wrist rest is included and its magnets hold securely.
- Basic typing works before Synapse is installed; this separates hardware faults from software problems.
If customization fails while basic typing works, update Synapse and firmware, then confirm that the current software recognizes this legacy model. Do not assume a missing wrist rest will be inexpensive or easy to replace.
Who should buy it?
Buy used or discounted if you:
- Prefer loud, tactile clicky feedback.
- Need a number pad and dedicated media controls.
- Will use the physical dial and illuminated wrist rest.
- Use Windows and accept Synapse.
- Can verify every key, USB connector, control, and lighting zone.
- Are paying substantially less than the original US$199.99 MSRP.
Skip it if you:
- Need quiet typing or share a room and microphone.
- Want linear, silent, magnetic, or adjustable-actuation switches.
- Expect Rapid Trigger, analog input, or 8,000-Hz polling.
- Need wireless connectivity, USB-C, or hot-swappable switches.
- Require deep Mac or Linux customization.
- Dislike proprietary software or the keyboard’s large desk footprint.
- Are paying near the price of a current Huntsman V3 Pro.
Final recommendation
The Razer Huntsman Elite is worth buying in 2026 as a specialty bargain, not as a universal upgrade. Its clicky Purple switches, dial, media controls, full-size layout, and illuminated wrist rest still form a package newer esports boards do not directly replicate. Buy one when those features are the reason you want it and the condition is demonstrably good. Otherwise, a current Huntsman model offers a newer platform and stronger competitive features for similar money.
