For Conan Exiles Enhanced on PC, install Conan Exiles Dedicated Server from Steam’s Tools library, configure its Windows server files, then allow and forward UDP ports 7777, 7778, and 27015 so players outside your home can connect. The steps below cover a Windows self-hosted server; first confirm that your game client and server use the same branch—Enhanced or Legacy.
Choose the right server and game version
A dedicated server runs independently of a player’s session. It can run on a spare Windows PC, another computer on your home network, or a rented game-server machine; it does not have to be a data-center server.
- Single-player or co-op: quickest to start, but the host generally needs to be present, and co-op has gameplay limitations.
- Self-hosted dedicated server: gives you control over settings, files, mods, and backups without a hosting subscription. You supply the always-on computer, network access, updates, security, and recovery.
- Rented private server: usually the simplest way to keep a world online without leaving a home PC running. It costs a recurring fee; check that the provider supports your game branch and required mods.
- Official server: requires no setup or maintenance, but offers less control over settings, rules, performance, wipes, and moderation.
Enhanced or Legacy?
Conan Exiles Enhanced is the Unreal Engine 5 PC version released on Steam on May 5, 2026. Conan Exiles Legacy is the older Unreal Engine 4 version, retained for players who need that client or private-server compatibility. Funcom says Legacy is no longer receiving updates, support, Bazaar access, or official servers; private UE4 servers remain possible. Check the Windows machine and network
Funcom’s current dedicated-server instructions document a Windows installation route, not a supported native Linux server. Use a 64-bit Windows PC with enough CPU, memory, disk space, and network capacity for your player count. Actual load varies with players, view distance, building density, mods, save size, and whether the machine also runs a game client. The current official material does not provide a current Enhanced hardware table, so older published requirements should not be treated as current targets. Linux/Wine and Docker approaches are unofficial unless verified for your exact build.
- Prefer an always-on computer connected by Ethernet.
- Keep several gigabytes free for server files, saves, logs, updates, and backups.
- Give the server PC a stable local network address, ideally with a static DHCP lease in the router.
- Check that your internet connection accepts inbound connections. Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT), double NAT, or ISP filtering can prevent home port forwarding from working.
If you cannot get a reachable public route, cannot leave a PC running, or do not want to maintain the server, renting is likely the easier option.
Install the dedicated-server application
Steam Tools (recommended)
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Change the library filter to Tools.
- Find and install Conan Exiles Dedicated Server.
- In Steam, open the tool’s properties or context menu and use Browse local files to locate its installation folder.
A common default location is C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonConan Exiles Dedicated Server, but Steam libraries can be on another drive. The dedicated-server Steam app ID is 443030 (see Steam Support).

To install without the Steam client, download SteamCMD from Valve’s official distribution, extract it to a dedicated folder, open a command prompt there, and run this command. Replace C:Exiles with your chosen installation directory:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:Exiles +app_update 443030 +quitSteamCMD may update itself the first time it runs. Use the same command periodically and before starting the server after a major game update. The command and app ID appear in Funcom’s technical manual.

Configure the server name, passwords, and player limit
In the server installation folder, the Windows configuration files are under:
ConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerStop the server before editing configuration files: settings may be rewritten during shutdown, discarding changes made while it was running. Back up the files first.

In Engine.ini, use the section and keys documented by Funcom:

Set the administrator password
In ServerSettings.ini, set:

Set the player limit
The maximum-player setting may be exposed through the current launcher or command line. A historical command-line example is ConanSandboxServer.exe -log -MaxPlayers=16. The permitted range has varied by version, so use the setting available in your current build rather than relying on an old universal maximum.
Start the server
Funcom identifies StartServer.bat and ConanSandboxServer.exe as startup options. Open the server’s Windows server configuration folder and run the batch file, or launch the executable directly. For a visible diagnostic window, run it from a command prompt with logging enabled:
ConanSandboxServer.exe -logThe batch file is convenient for repeat starts and command-line options. Keep the log window visible during initial setup so startup errors are not hidden. Funcom warns that starting the dedicated-server build through the Steam client can produce Steam DLL error messages; launch the batch file or executable directly instead. Its current instructions explain the startup options.
Allow traffic through Windows Firewall and your router
For a typical PC dedicated server, Funcom documents these ports:

The port numbers and qualifications are from Funcom’s current port documentation. It also says the dedicated server uses a custom query implementation; remove deprecated [OnlineSubsystemSteam] query configuration rather than copying it from old guides.

- Assign the server PC a static DHCP lease or fixed local address, such as
192.168.1.50. - In Windows Defender Firewall, allow the server executable, then create inbound rules for the required ports. Use UDP for 7777, 7778, and 27015.
- In your router’s port-forwarding settings, forward those UDP ports from the WAN interface to the server PC’s fixed local IP.
- If you enable RCON, forward TCP 25575 only when needed. Use a unique password and restrict permitted source IPs where possible; do not expose it broadly without a reason.
- Test from outside your home network. A port test or connection attempt from inside may fail simply because the router does not support NAT loopback.
Opening Windows Firewall is not enough if the router has no forwarding rule, or if CGNAT, double NAT, or ISP filtering blocks inbound traffic. If your modem and router both perform NAT, configure the network appropriately or ask your ISP about a public inbound address.
Join the server and verify it works
Test on the local network
Start the server, then use another device on the same LAN to search for it or connect using its local address where the client supports that method. Testing from the same PC is useful for basic checks, but it does not prove that internet players can reach the server.
Test from outside the network
- Ask a friend on a different internet connection to search for the server in the appropriate in-game browser.
- If it is not listed, try Steam’s View → Game Servers interface and add the public IP with the server’s query port.
- Confirm that both player and server use the same branch and compatible mod list.
Success means the server process stays open, a remote player can join, configured name and password behavior work, and a save appears under the server’s Saved directory. A server can be visible in a browser yet still reject joins if its gameplay port is blocked.
Grant administrator access
Join the server with a player account, open the current in-game server settings or admin screen, choose Make Me Admin, and enter the AdminPassword set in ServerSettings.ini. Menu labels can differ in Enhanced, so use the current admin/settings screen rather than expecting an identical legacy UI. Funcom’s older private-server setup guide describes the same password-based workflow.
Add mods carefully
Mods affect both the server and its players. Funcom’s technical manual describes a server Mods folder and modlist.txt; Steam Workshop users typically obtain mods through Steam. The exact download path varies by PC storefront/client, as Funcom’s current port documentation notes.

- Stop the server and back up its save before changing mods.
- Install one mod at a time while establishing the server, so a failure is easier to isolate.
- Ensure players have the same mods in the same effective load order.
- Update mods in a controlled maintenance window; a game update can make a mod incompatible even when the server itself updates successfully.
- Removing a mod can affect buildings, items, NPCs, or characters that depend on it. Do not remove or reorder mods on a live world without a backup and a plan.
Funcom has published a Dedicated Server Launcher to simplify administration, but launcher releases are versioned and may not match every Enhanced build. Check the official launcher discussion for current compatibility rather than assuming an older release is current.
Back up saves and update safely
The server database is located at <ServerFolder>ConanSandboxSavedgame.db; Funcom’s Enhanced information references this path. Preserve the entire ConanSandboxSaved directory, not only the database, along with configuration files and the mod list.
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the full
ConanSandboxSaveddirectory and relevant configuration files to a dated backup folder. - Keep several generations of backups on storage separate from the live server where practical.
- Test restoration in a separate folder or machine before relying on the backup.
Before a game update, stop the server and preserve a backup. Update through Steam’s tool or rerun the SteamCMD command, then start the server and check its log before inviting players back. If a crash or failed update occurs, preserve the current files before restoring an older backup; never overwrite your only recovery copy.
Troubleshoot common problems
The server does not appear in the browser
- Check that server and client are on the same branch: Enhanced or Legacy.
- Confirm the server process is still running and not bound to the wrong network interface.
- Verify Windows Firewall allows the server traffic.
- Check that UDP 7777, 7778, and 27015 are forwarded to the server PC’s current local IP.
- Check for a query-port conflict with another server or application.
- Determine whether CGNAT, double NAT, or ISP filtering prevents inbound traffic.
- Try Steam’s server browser or a direct/favorite route if supported.
Players can see it but cannot join
- The query port may be open while the main game port is not.
- The forwarding destination may be the wrong local address, or the server may listen on a different port than the router forwards.
- Windows Firewall may allow querying but block gameplay traffic.
- The client may have the wrong game branch, join password, or mod set/load order.
- Check that the name and password were saved in the specified
Engine.iniand that the server was restarted after editing.
The server starts and immediately closes
Read the visible command window or log. Check for another server using the same ports, an incomplete or partially updated installation, an incompatible mod, launching from the wrong folder, or security software blocking or quarantining a file. Start directly with the batch file or executable rather than through Steam.
It works locally but not over the internet
This usually points to WAN networking rather than an in-game setting. Check whether the router’s WAN address is public, whether a modem creates double NAT, whether the forwarding rules target the fixed server address, and whether your ISP filters inbound traffic. Have a player test from outside the home network.
Run more than one server on a PC
Each instance needs its own isolated server folder or save/configuration directory, a distinct game port and query port, and the corresponding pinger port. Add separate router forwards for every externally accessible instance. The official launcher discussion also covers separate folders and port sets for multiple servers.
When renting is preferable
Self-hosting suits a group with suitable always-on hardware, reliable inbound connectivity, and an administrator willing to manage updates, ports, mods, and backups. A managed host makes more sense when you need 24/7 availability, are behind CGNAT, want support and automated backups, or would rather use a web control panel.
Before ordering, compare the actual branch (Enhanced or Legacy), player slots, CPU and memory allocation for your mod load, location and latency, backup frequency and retention, Workshop controls, RCON or web console, migration options, and cancellation/refund terms. Confirm region, taxes, and checkout configuration; advertised prices and features can vary.
