Yes—VRChat can be played online on a Linux PC, but there is no native Linux client. The Steam release is a Windows application that generally runs through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. Steam Deck/SteamOS has the strongest support position and is Steam Deck Verified; other distributions such as Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch and Mint may work but are not officially supported in the same way. Desktop mode is the sensible first test. PCVR adds SteamVR, headset, driver and compositor requirements that make Linux considerably more fragile than Windows.
What works on Linux?
VRChat is free to play, supports online cross-platform multiplayer, requires a VRChat account and includes optional in-app purchases. A headset is not required: keyboard-and-mouse or gamepad desktop mode provides access to worlds, avatars, voice, text and social instances, although it cannot reproduce tracked-body VR interaction. See the Steam listing and VRChat’s Getting Started guide.
- Native Linux: No. VRChat has no Linux executable and the official wiki says there are no concrete plans for one (VRChat Wiki).
- Desktop Linux: Often playable through Proton, but updates, anti-cheat, codecs and graphics stacks can change results. VRChat’s official desktop requirements list Windows 10/11.
- Steam Deck: Steam Deck Verified and the most straightforward Linux route, primarily for desktop-style play. Verification does not guarantee identical behavior on every desktop distribution or a high-end PCVR setup.
- PCVR: Possible through Linux SteamVR, but headset connection methods and vendor software vary widely. Windows remains the officially supported desktop operating system for non-Deck users.
Check hardware and storage first
The Steam page lists these Windows-oriented minimums: a 64-bit processor and operating system, Intel i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent, DirectX 11, broadband internet and at least 1 GB of listed application storage. SteamVR is required for VR mode (Steam).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe VRChat Wiki gives a more practical estimate of approximately 31.5 GB for the application and minimum cache allocation, recommends at least 25 Mbps download speed, and warns that user-created worlds and avatars can be dramatically more demanding than the minimum specification (VRChat Wiki). Treat 4 GB RAM as a launch minimum, not a comfortable modern Linux target. Reserve additional fast storage for cache growth, and expect substantially more performance headroom for PCVR than desktop mode.

Install VRChat with Steam and Proton
1. Install Steam
For desktop-only use, a Flatpak Steam installation may work in some environments. For PCVR, use your distribution’s native Steam package where possible. Steam’s Linux SteamVR guidance specifically warns against the unsupported Snap and Flatpak packages for SteamVR because packaging can interfere with DRM leasing and asynchronous reprojection. Ubuntu users should prefer Steam’s official .deb package (Steam Support).
2. Install the game
- Open Steam and search for VRChat.
- Select the official game published by VRChat Inc. and choose Install.
- Allow space for the application and expanding cache.
- Sign in to an existing VRChat account or create one when prompted.
3. Enable Proton
- Open Steam > Settings > Compatibility and enable Steam Play/Proton for supported titles.
- If Steam does not select a tool automatically, open VRChat’s Properties > Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Start with the current stable Proton offered by your Steam installation. Try Proton Experimental only as a troubleshooting alternative; available versions and results change after game updates.
4. Install Proton Easy Anti-Cheat Runtime
VRChat uses Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). In Steam, open Library > Tools, search for Proton Easy Anti-Cheat Runtime, install it and restart Steam. This is a Proton component, not a native Linux build or an anti-cheat bypass. Valve explains that EAC compatibility requires the game developer to enable Proton support and provide a Linux-compatible component (Valve Proton documentation).

5. Test desktop mode
Start VRChat from Steam without launching SteamVR. A successful first run should open the launcher, permit sign-in, reach the main menu, load a simple online instance and allow basic voice and text interaction. Do this before troubleshooting wireless VR, overlays, video players or custom Proton builds.
Setting up PCVR on Linux
Desktop mode and PCVR are separate paths. Get desktop mode working first, then install and test SteamVR independently before launching VRChat through it.

SteamVR requirements
- NVIDIA users need the proprietary driver; Nouveau is not supported for Vulkan. Steam specifies NVIDIA driver version 525 or newer.
- AMD and Intel users should use Mesa 22.0 or newer. AMDVLK and AMDGPU-Pro are not supported by Steam’s Linux SteamVR guidance.
- SteamVR requires a desktop environment or compositor capable of DRM leasing.
- X11 window managers and compositors are supported. KDE Plasma Wayland and most wlroots-based compositors are listed as compatible; GNOME Wayland is specifically listed as unsupported for SteamVR DRM leasing. On Ubuntu, select an X11 session at login or use a compatible KDE/wlroots environment.
These requirements and compositor qualifications come from Steam’s Linux SteamVR support page.
Headset and connection caveats
SteamVR-compatible headsets such as HTC Vive and Valve Index are identified by VRChat’s platform information, but that is not a guarantee for every Linux connection method (VRChat platform FAQ). Native SteamVR headsets, Quest headsets using PC streaming, vendor-specific wireless systems and open-source Linux streaming stacks have different support profiles. Do not assume a Windows wireless client or accessory utility has a Linux equivalent.

Fix common Linux problems
| Symptom | First checks and recovery |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens after Play | Restart Steam and the computer; check the selected Proton tool; install Proton Easy Anti-Cheat Runtime; verify files with Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files; remove experimental launch options; try Proton Experimental or another installed Proton version. |
| Easy Anti-Cheat error | Reinstall the EAC Runtime, verify files, return to current stable Proton or Proton Experimental, remove custom launch options and restart Steam. Record the exact message before contacting support. EAC behavior can change when VRChat or EAC updates. |
| Login or online failure | Remove launch options, verify files and test the current Proton versions. An account or client restriction is not necessarily a Linux problem; do not attempt to bypass anti-cheat. |
| Black screen, tracking failure or SteamVR will not start | Use native Steam rather than Snap/Flatpak for SteamVR; check proprietary NVIDIA or supported Mesa drivers; confirm DRM-leasing support and use X11 or a compatible Wayland compositor; ensure the headset appears in SteamVR first. |
| Videos do not play | Video playback depends on codecs, Proton, drivers and the individual world’s URL. The Wiki recommends HEVC Video Extensions, but installation depends on the Proton environment. A community GE-Proton build may help particular codec cases, but it is not an official requirement or universal fix (VRChat Wiki). |
| Stutter, crashes or very low frame rate | Enable Safety Shield and avatar-performance limits, hide poorly optimized avatars, leave crowded instances, lower resolution, disable mirrors and expensive effects, test a simple avatar/world, and monitor RAM and VRAM. User-created shaders, particles, mirrors and videos can overwhelm otherwise capable hardware. |
| Repeated crashes after an update | Test another installed Proton build, verify files and consult VRChat’s current crash guidance. VRChat notes that non-SteamOS Linux distributions may work but are not officially supported (VRChat crash support). |
Cache recovery
VRChat’s crash guidance includes a Linux/SteamOS warning that cache folders may need manual clearing. Verify files first and note the relevant Proton prefix before deleting anything. Clearing cache makes worlds, avatars and other content download again; deleting the wrong prefix can affect other data. Use the current folder instructions on the official crash page rather than relying on a hard-coded path that may change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Linux, Steam Deck or Windows?
| Choose | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Linux desktop | Users comfortable with Proton troubleshooting who mainly want desktop mode and have well-supported drivers. | Updates can temporarily break launch, EAC, codecs or accessories; support is not official outside SteamOS. |
| Steam Deck | Casual social play, exploring worlds and controller-based desktop VRChat on the Verified SteamOS configuration. | Handheld performance limits and demanding worlds; not a universal replacement for a high-end PCVR system. |
| Windows | Users needing the least troubleshooting, broadest PCVR and vendor accessory compatibility, dependable overlays, wireless streaming and video playback. | Requires using the officially supported desktop operating system rather than a Linux setup. |
Stay safe in your first sessions
- Keep VRChat’s Safety Shield enabled initially and raise avatar-performance restrictions gradually (Getting Started guide).
- Block or mute users who harass you, and limit effects from unknown avatars.
- Avoid unofficial VRChat clients, suspicious downloads and tools claiming to bypass EAC.
- Use only supported Proton and Steam paths; Linux workarounds are not permission to defeat platform protections.
The Bottom Line
VRChat is playable online on Linux through Proton, not through a native client. Start with desktop mode and the official/current Proton plus EAC Runtime. Steam Deck is the easiest supported Linux option; PCVR on desktop Linux depends on native Steam, compatible drivers, DRM-leasing compositor support and a headset connection that works on Linux. If full accessory, video and PCVR reliability matters more than avoiding Windows, Windows remains the safer choice.
