“PlayStation Network sign-in failed” can mean a PSN outage, a console that cannot reach the internet, an expired login session, an account-security problem, or a suspension. Work through the checks below in order, starting with the ones that do not change account or console data. If PSN’s official status page shows the affected service is unavailable, wait for it to recover before changing settings.
Quick triage: Check PSN status, restart the console, run its internet test, and try signing in to PlayStation Account Management in a browser. Note the exact error code. If the account works in a browser but not on the console, focus on the console’s connection, software, or session; if it fails everywhere, check credentials, verification, account access, and suspension.
Fixes 1–5: Check PSN and your connection
1. Check whether PlayStation Network is unavailable
Open PlayStation Network Service Status and look at the services related to sign-in, gaming, and the PlayStation Store. An outage or maintenance event cannot be fixed from your console. If a relevant service is marked unavailable, wait and check again later; do not reset your network or console to work around a server-side problem.
2. Fully restart the console
Use the power menu to select Restart PS5 on PS5, or Power > Restart PS4 on PS4. Let the console shut down and boot completely, then try signing in again. A restart can clear a temporary session or system glitch, but it will not fix an outage, incorrect password, or suspension.

- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button

3. Test the console’s internet connection
- PS5: Go to Settings > Network > Connection Status > Test Internet Connection.
- PS4: Go to Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
Note which test stage fails: obtaining an IP address, internet connection, PlayStation Network sign-in, NAT type, or download/upload speed. A good speed result does not prove that sign-in will work: PSN availability, unstable Wi-Fi, DNS response, captive portals, and account authentication can fail independently. Sony’s connectivity guide covers console network tests and setup.
4. Power-cycle the modem and router
- Turn off the PS5 or PS4.
- Turn off the modem and router.
- Wait at least five minutes.
- Turn the network equipment back on and wait for the internet connection to return.
- Restart the console and test again.
Sony recommends a five-minute wait for at least one PS5 server-connection error; see its instructions for error CE-109258-5. This is a restart, not a factory reset of the router. If every device at home is offline, restore the home internet or contact your ISP. If other devices work but PlayStation does not, continue with console, PSN, and account checks.
5. Reconnect to Wi-Fi or compare with another network
- PS5: Open Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection, select the saved Wi-Fi network, and enter its password again.
- PS4: Open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi-Fi, select the network, and enter its security information. Sony also offers Easy, Custom, and manual setup options.
If possible, connect temporarily by Ethernet. You can also compare with another Wi-Fi band or a phone hotspot, if your mobile plan allows it. These are diagnostic comparisons, not permanent-fix guarantees: walls, distance, interference, and router configuration affect Wi-Fi performance. If a hotspot works but home Wi-Fi does not, investigate the router, ISP, filtering, NAT, or DNS configuration. Hotel, school, workplace, and other managed networks may require browser authentication or block PlayStation traffic. See Sony’s network setup guidance.
Fixes 6–9: Refresh console software and account authentication
6. Update the system software
- PS5: Go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software. Sony says Update Available appears when newer software is available.
- PS4: Open Settings and choose the system-software update option.
Some online features and error conditions require current system software. Check Sony’s connectivity and update instructions and error-code hub. If the console has been offline for a long time or a normal update fails, Sony explains how to update through Safe Mode or USB.

7. Sign out, restart, and sign back in
- PS5: Use the account controls under Settings > Users and Accounts to sign out. Restart, then use Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Sign In.
- PS4: Choose Settings > Account Management > Sign Out, then return to Account Management > Sign In.
This refreshes a stale console session. It will not correct an outage, broken internet connection, wrong password, or suspended account. For PS5 error NP-104627-0, Sony also recommends signing in through the settings path and testing the internet connection: NP-104627-0 troubleshooting.
8. Confirm the sign-in email and reset the password if needed
Your sign-in ID is the email address linked to the PlayStation account, not necessarily your online ID or profile name. If you may have the wrong email or password, use Sony’s password-reset instructions: in Account Management, select Trouble Signing in?, then Reset your password or Recover Your Account, enter the sign-in email, and follow the secure email link. Allow a few minutes for the message and check spam or junk folders.
If you no longer have access to that email, or do not know which email is on the account, use account recovery or contact PlayStation Support. A family manager may need to recover a child account. Never enter your credentials on a third-party “PSN fix” site.

For 2-step verification (2SV): Sony says a verification code is valid for 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. Select Resend Code if it expires. If no code arrives, wait a few minutes, restart the phone, confirm Airplane Mode is off, and check mobile signal. If both are configured, try the authenticator app instead of SMS or vice versa. A saved backup code can be used if the phone is unavailable; each backup code works once. Without a backup code or access to the registered phone, contact PlayStation Support to recover access. See Sony’s 2SV sign-in guide.

- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
For a passkey: Choose Can’t Sign In with Passkey on the sign-in screen and use password, email, or QR-code sign-in if offered. Update the browser or device if needed. Passkey support depends on the device and browser; Sony notes that some Android/Windows combinations and other browser situations can cause problems. Its account support page describes fallback options. A passkey is an authentication method, not a network repair.
Fixes 10–12: Check content access and account restrictions
10. Restore licenses only for locked or missing content
Use this when a purchased game shows a padlock, a game or add-on is missing, a game crashes while validating ownership, or the console cannot confirm a license. It is not a general remedy for a sign-in error, wrong password, or PSN outage.
- PS5: Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- PS4: Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses.
Sony says restoring licenses does not affect user data. It also does not make games from an expired PlayStation Plus subscription available. See Restore Licenses on PlayStation.
11. Check sharing or primary-console activation for shared purchases
If you can sign in but cannot access purchased games, or another account on the same console cannot use shared content, check the ownership account’s sharing setting. On PS5, review Console Sharing and Offline Play; on PS4, check whether the console is activated as that account’s primary PS4. This is an access and license branch, not a first-line fix for authentication. Sony includes these settings in its game-access and license guidance.

12. Check suspension notices and signs of account compromise
A suspension can block PSN access and will not be fixed by restarting the router. Search the sign-in email, including spam and junk folders, and check My Support for the account status. Record the exact error code. Sony explains account and console suspensions and says suspension information is normally sent to the sign-in email.
Unexpected password changes, an unfamiliar sign-in email, or 2SV messages you did not request can indicate attempted account access. Treat these as security issues: use Sony’s official account recovery route and contact support if you cannot secure the account. Do not create another account to evade a suspension; it will not restore purchases on the affected account.

Try Safe Mode only after checking service status, network access, software updates, and account authentication. To start it on either console, turn the console off by holding the power button for about three seconds. Hold the power button again and release it after the second beep, about seven seconds after the first. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press its PS button. Sony warns that some Safe Mode options can erase data, so back up important data before selecting any reset or reinstallation option. See the complete Safe Mode instructions and warnings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrefer repair and update options before reset
- PS5: Repair Console Storage does not erase data. Clear System Software Cache may help system-feature or performance problems. Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new content database. Update System Software is available if normal updating fails.
- PS4: Safe Mode includes Update System Software, Restore Default Settings, and Rebuild Database. Restoring default settings is not the same as initializing: Sony says it does not delete games, apps, screenshots, video clips, or saved data.
Do not choose Reset PS5, Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software), Initialize PS4, or system-software reinstallation as a routine sign-in fix. These are last-resort procedures that delete user data; back up first and follow Sony’s instructions.

Use the exact error code to narrow the cause
If a code appears, record it exactly and consult the matching official lookup rather than assuming every connection code has the same cause. These examples are clues, not complete diagnoses:
| Console | Example code | What Sony’s listing indicates | Official lookup |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | NP-104433-5 | Possible sign-in-status problem | PS5 error codes |
| PS5 | WV-109168-5 | Error while connecting to PSN | PS5 error codes |
| PS5 | NW-102636-8 | Connection timed out | PS5 error codes |
| PS5 | WS-116331-5 / WS-116367-4 | Account or access suspension indicators | PS5 error codes |
| PS4 | CE-33987-0 | Network connection timed out while signing in | PS4 error codes |
| PS4 | WS-37505-0 | Connection between console and server failed | PS4 error codes |
| PS4 | NW-31253-4 | Delayed or unstable DNS response | PS4 error codes |
| PS4 | CE-33950-0 | Unable to connect to the server to verify a license | PS4 error codes |
For other codes, use Sony’s general error-code hub. A NAT warning can affect multiplayer or party chat without proving it caused account sign-in failure. Avoid changing DNS as an early, universal fix; investigate it only if the code or network results point to DNS.
When to stop and contact PlayStation Support
Contact Sony if you cannot access the account email, lack both 2SV phone access and backup codes, suspect account compromise, see a suspension notice, or continue to get the same error across networks. Also seek support if an update or Safe Mode procedure fails. Sony’s official connectivity support, account support, and PS4 hardware support pages direct you to relevant help. If there is no code, reproduce the problem and note the full message before contacting support.
