The “Could not connect to the Steam network” message does not point to one specific fault. Steam may be down, your internet connection may be failing, or something on your PC or network may be blocking the client. Check the scope first, then work through the fixes below—from a full Steam restart to Windows network resets—before considering a reinstall.
Start with these checks
- Open Steam’s website in a browser and check Steam’s network-connectivity guidance for server-status information.
- Test a few unrelated websites on the same computer. If they also fail, troubleshoot the computer’s internet connection before Steam.
- Close Steam completely and reopen it. If the client is stuck checking for updates, restart the computer.
- If Steam still cannot connect, check for a VPN, proxy, firewall, antivirus filter, or network restriction before trying client-specific fixes.
Use the results to choose the right branch: if Steam’s website and client fail for many people, wait for service recovery; if other devices on your network also have no internet, investigate the router or ISP; if Steam works on a phone hotspot but not your usual network, focus on that network rather than reinstalling the client.
Check whether Steam or your internet connection is down
Try loading Steam’s website in a browser and check the server-status information linked from Steam’s network FAQ. Widespread timeouts when accessing Steam sites can indicate a system-wide issue. Do not assume Steam is down based on the error alone; outage status changes, and no live status check is included here.
Then compare the client with other connections:
- Steam’s website and client both fail, while unrelated sites work: an outage, filtering, or a routing problem affecting Steam is possible. Check status and try another network before changing the installation.
- Steam’s website works but the client fails: look at the client process, proxy, VPN, firewall, antivirus, or Steam’s local state.
- Unrelated sites fail on this computer: troubleshoot its network connection first.
- Other devices on the same Wi-Fi fail too: the router, modem, or ISP is more likely than Steam.
Steam’s client sign-in troubleshooting lists maintenance, local-network or ISP problems, and interfering programs among possible causes.

Fully restart Steam, then restart the network
Close every Steam client process
- Exit Steam normally from the client.
- If it did not close, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End remaining Steam processes only; do not terminate unrelated system processes.
- Open Steam again. If the client remains stuck checking for updates, restart Windows before proceeding.
Restarting the client after checking for an outage is also part of Steam’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance.
Power-cycle your modem and router
- Shut down Steam.
- Unplug the modem or gateway and router from power. If they are one combined device, unplug that device.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem or gateway first and let it finish reconnecting.
- If the router is separate, reconnect it and wait for it to finish starting.
- Restart the computer and try Steam again.
This follows Steam’s network-equipment restart guidance. If available, test with Ethernet as well: a working wired connection when Wi-Fi fails points toward the wireless link or router configuration.
Check VPNs, proxies, antivirus, and firewall rules
VPN software, manually configured proxies, third-party security tools, DNS filters, parental controls, and managed network policies can interfere with Steam. Test one suspected blocker at a time:

- Restart Steam and test the connection.
- If nothing changes, restore that protection before testing another item.
- If the test fixes Steam, configure a narrow exception or correct the setting rather than leaving protection disabled.
On Windows, the usual firewall route is Windows Security → Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall → Change settings. Allow Steam on the appropriate private network. Allowing it on a public network has different security implications, so do so only if needed and understood. If Steam is absent, use Allow another app and browse to the Steam executable. Avoid granting every Steam game access on every network by default; individual games can have separate multiplayer requirements.

Steam’s firewall guidance discusses temporary disabling only as a diagnostic test and recommends creating an exception afterward. Its connection troubleshooting also identifies interfering programs as a possible cause (Steam Support).
Inspect Windows proxy settings
- Open Settings → Network & internet → Proxy.
- Turn off a manually configured proxy if you do not intentionally use it.
- Restart Steam and test again.
For an advanced WinHTTP reset, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
netsh winhttp reset proxyThis resets Windows WinHTTP proxy configuration, but may not remove settings applied separately by a browser or VPN. Do not run it on a managed work or school computer without authorization.

Clear Steam’s download cache only for relevant symptoms
If sign-in works but downloads, updates, or content-server connections are stuck, try Steam → Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache. The Settings label or location may vary slightly by client version.

This clears download-related cache, not installed games or game saves. Steam may sign you out, and active downloads may need to restart. It is more relevant to download or update failures than to a complete internet outage or an account sign-in error. Steam’s Offline Mode guidance directs users with connection trouble to its network troubleshooting rather than promising cache clearing as a universal fix.
Use another network to isolate the cause
Try the same computer on a phone hotspot, or test another device on your usual network. A hotspot is a useful comparison because it bypasses your home router and ISP:
- Steam works on the hotspot but not home Wi-Fi: investigate the router, home DNS path, ISP, or network filtering.
- Steam fails on both networks but the website works: revisit client state and security software on the computer.
- Other devices also fail on home Wi-Fi: power-cycle the network equipment; if service remains down, contact the ISP.
A hotspot test may use mobile data, so watch your plan’s limits. On public Wi-Fi, open a browser and complete any captive-portal sign-in before testing Steam.

These are general Windows diagnostics, not Steam-specific repair commands. Use them only after checking service status and connection blockers. On a managed device, ask the administrator before changing network settings.

- Search for Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run the DNS-cache command:
ipconfig /flushdnsThis clears the local DNS resolver cache; it does not change your DNS provider or repair a blocked connection.
- Run the Winsock reset if the issue persists:
netsh winsock reset- Restart Windows, then test Steam again.
A Winsock reset resets the Windows Winsock catalog and may affect software that installs network filters. Record unusual VPN, security, or enterprise-network settings before using it. If you suspect DNS specifically, test an alternative resolver only after ruling out an outage or firewall block; a DNS change is not a universal fix and is not inherently faster for every user.

School, work, hotel, and public networks
Some university networks and proxies block ports Steam needs; ISP blocking or traffic shaping can also cause problems, including at particular times of day. Steam notes these possibilities in its network FAQ. On a work or school network, do not try to bypass policy—ask the network administrator whether Steam is allowed. For hotel or public Wi-Fi, complete any browser-based captive portal first. If Steam works on another network, give the network operator or ISP that comparison when you ask for help. Port requirements can vary among the Steam client, Steam Voice, Remote Play, and individual games, so use current Steam documentation rather than an old generic port list.

Downloads fail but sign-in works
Try clearing the download cache first. If downloads remain stuck, open Steam → Settings → Downloads and choose a nearby alternative under Download Region, then retry the download or restart Steam. This may route content delivery through another server; it will not repair authentication failure, a blocked Steam client connection, or an ISP outage. If only one game is affected, check whether that game’s servers or services are unavailable instead of treating it as a Steam-wide client failure.

Steam Deck: test Wi-Fi bands and wired Ethernet
If the problem occurs only on Steam Deck, try the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks separately when both are available. If possible, test a wired connection using a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter. Also check Steam’s server information and whether the network restricts Steam traffic or uses an authentication setup the Deck cannot work with. Steam includes these device-specific checks in its network-connectivity guidance.
Use Offline Mode only if it was prepared while online
Offline Mode is a temporary way to play some games without an active Steam connection, not a fix for the connection error. While online, sign in, let the intended games finish updating, launch each game once, and ensure Steam is allowed to save account credentials; then choose Steam → Go Offline. Games that require online services or an external launcher may not work. Offline Mode cannot bypass a required first login. See Steam’s Offline Mode instructions for details.

When to contact Steam Support
Contact Steam Support if the problem persists across multiple networks, Steam works in a browser but not in the installed client after the checks above, an error code appears, or you suspect an account restriction or security issue. Repeated password attempts or suspicious-login prompts belong in account recovery, not repeated network resets.
Include the exact error text and code, operating system and whether the device is a Steam Deck, whether Steam’s website works, whether another network works, VPN/proxy/firewall/antivirus details, and when the problem began with your time zone. Attach a screenshot and any logs Support requests; the Steam help flow accepts troubleshooting details and attachments.
Do not permanently disable firewall protection, delete Steam folders at random, or change IPv6 settings as a routine fix. Reinstall Steam only after connection, firewall, proxy, and client-state checks fail: reinstalling cannot fix an ISP block or a service outage and may cause unnecessary downloads.
