If Xbox sign-in or a Game Pass launch fails with 0x80070102 or 0x0000042B, first check Xbox service status, then follow the steps for the device showing the error. These codes can appear in different Windows and Xbox contexts; they are not a confirmed pair with one universal fix. Start with the Windows steps if the error is in the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or a PC game. Use the console steps if it appears on an Xbox dashboard.
Start with the checks that apply to every device
- Check Xbox status. If sign-in or another relevant service is experiencing an incident, local resets and reinstalls are unlikely to help. A working internet connection does not establish that Xbox authentication is available.
- Restart the affected device. On a PC, choose Restart rather than assuming shutdown does the same thing. On a console, use the power-cycle steps below if a normal restart is not possible.
- Note where the failure happens. Record whether the Xbox app cannot sign in, a game remains on “Launching,” the Store cannot authenticate, or the console dashboard fails. If just one game is affected, begin with that title’s status and entitlement rather than treating the whole account or device as broken.

Fix the error on a Windows 10 or 11 PC
Windows menu labels can vary slightly by build. Work through these steps in order, testing Xbox sign-in or the affected game after each relevant change.

- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically and, if available, Set time zone automatically.
- Select Sync now.
- Open Time & language > Language & region and confirm the region is correct.
- Restart Windows and test again.

Update Windows and Store apps
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install applicable updates and restart if prompted.
- Open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. Install available updates for Xbox, Gaming Services, and Microsoft Store.
These checks ensure available updates are installed; they do not establish that a particular update fixes either code.
Sign out of both Xbox and Microsoft Store, then sign in again
- In the Xbox app, select the profile icon and sign out. Close the app.
- Open Microsoft Store and sign out of its account.
- Restart the PC.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store with the account that owns the game or Game Pass access.
- Open Xbox and sign in with the intended Xbox profile.
The Store account supplies game licensing, while the Xbox account is used for the gaming profile and services. If you use family sharing, multiple Microsoft accounts, or a subscription owned by another account, confirm which account provides access before switching accounts.

Repair Xbox and related apps
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Xbox, select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options.
- Select Terminate, then Repair. Reopen Xbox and test.
- If the problem remains, return to the same page and select Reset, then sign in again.
- If the relevant app is listed and the error involves it, repeat the process for Microsoft Store or Gaming Services. Try Xbox Game Bar if the failure involves its overlay or sign-in components.
Repair attempts to fix an app without removing its local data. Reset clears app data and can require sign-in again. Resetting the Xbox app is not the same as deleting installed games or save folders, but local and cloud save behavior varies by title and platform. Do not delete game folders or save data as a troubleshooting shortcut.

Reset the Microsoft Store cache
- Press Win + R.
- Enter
wsreset.exeand press Enter. - Wait for Microsoft Store to reopen, restart the PC, and retry Store and Xbox sign-in.
This resets the Store cache; it is not a general Xbox repair and is not guaranteed to resolve either code.

Check the network before changing deeper system settings
- Restart the router or modem, and try another network if available.
- Temporarily disable VPN or proxy software and retest. If the error occurs only while one is enabled, that comparison is useful evidence.
- Use Ethernet for a test if Wi-Fi is unstable.
- If the Xbox app provides a networking diagnostic, record any separate NAT, Teredo, or server-connectivity result. A sign-in error alone does not establish that NAT is the cause.
Advanced: reinstall Gaming Services
Use this only after the preceding steps fail. The following procedure is reported by Windows Report; it is not presented here as a first-party Microsoft fix or a guaranteed solution. The removal command needs administrator permissions and applies to all users on the PC. Games and services that depend on Gaming Services may not work until you reinstall it.
- Open Windows Terminal or PowerShell as Administrator.
- Run:
get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers - Open the Gaming Services Store listing by running:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN - Install Gaming Services from Microsoft Store, restart Windows, and test Xbox sign-in or the affected game.
Do not remove Gaming Services and stop before reinstalling it. Avoid unrelated registry edits, DLL re-registration commands, and third-party repair utilities: these codes alone do not establish a registry, DLL, malware, or driver fault.

Fix the error on an Xbox console
These steps apply to an Xbox One-style console sign-in failure. Menu labels can vary with console software; do not use console paths for a Windows PC issue.

- If the console is stuck, hold its power button for about 10 seconds until it shuts down. Unplug the power cable briefly, reconnect it, and restart.
- Open Settings > General > Network settings, then run Test network connection and Test multiplayer connection. Record any separate error shown; 0x80070102 by itself does not identify a network fault.
- If the dashboard responds and sign-in still fails, go to Settings > Account > Remove accounts, remove the affected account, restart, then add it again.
Power-cycle and account recovery suggestions for this code appear in third-party Xbox One troubleshooting coverage, rather than a dedicated current Microsoft article for this exact error. Do not choose Reset console > Remove everything as a routine next step; contact Xbox Support first if the console remains unusable.

When only one game fails
- Check whether other Xbox games launch. If they do, the failure may be limited to that title.
- Check the game publisher’s service status, then confirm the Microsoft account currently signed into the Store has the game or subscription entitlement.
- Consider repairing or reinstalling only the affected game after checking its save and cloud-sync guidance. Do not infer a general Xbox sign-in failure from one title.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact Xbox Support
Use Xbox Support if the status page reports an incident, multiple Microsoft apps cannot authenticate, the console cannot reach its dashboard after a power cycle, or removing and re-adding the account does not restore access. Before contacting support, note:
