Yes—Poppy Playtime’s first chapter is free to play on Steam. The free base game is a single-player horror-puzzle experience. Chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5 are separate paid DLC, so the entire series is not free.
What the free Steam version includes
Steam lists the base product Poppy Playtime as “Free To Play” and presents a “Play Game” button. Mob Entertainment’s store disclaimer says that purchasing the base game includes the first chapter and that further chapters are DLC. The base game originally released on October 12, 2021; this is not a new 2026 giveaway.
You can view the listing on Steam. The main game is single-player, not the separate multiplayer title PROJECT: PLAYTIME.
How to install Chapter 1 free
From the Steam website
- Open the Poppy Playtime Steam page.
- Select Play Game.
- When Steam prompts you, continue in the Steam client to choose an install location.
From the Steam client
- Sign in to Steam and open Library.
- Select Poppy Playtime.
- Double-click the title or choose Install.
Steam’s account guidance says registered games appear in Library and can be installed by double-clicking the title. If the game is missing, confirm that you are using the account that added it, check View > Hidden Games, and log out and back in if the addition was recent. Which chapters cost money?
Each paid DLC purchase contains only the named chapter and requires the free base game. Standard U.S. list prices and release dates shown by Steam are:

Sale prices can end, and Steam varies prices by country, currency and account region. Check the individual DLC listings before buying.

Do not assume those figures apply to every later chapter. For example, Chapter 3 lists 60 GB of storage and Chapter 4 lists 15 GB. Chapter 5 lists Windows 10/11, DirectX 12, 8 GB RAM minimum and a minimum Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 or Radeon RX 470; its recommended hardware is considerably stronger. Chapter 5 crashes at startup
Mob Entertainment reported startup crashes tied to Unreal Engine 5.6, particular graphics-driver versions and specific hardware configurations. A February 18, 2026 patch addressed a rare DirectX 12 clock-calibration crash. Keep Steam and your graphics driver current, then check the developer’s official announcements for chapter-specific fixes.

Chapters 1–4 behave incorrectly after an update
On February 11, 2026, Mob rolled back a major Chapters 1–4 update after serious player-reported problems. The developer said achievements earned during the problematic update would remain on users’ accounts. If your installation still behaves abnormally, restart Steam and apply any available update before troubleshooting further.

- Open Library.
- Right-click the game, or select the gear icon on its Library page.
- Choose Properties….
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam notes that one or more files can fail verification when they are local configuration files that the process does not replace; that result can be normal. Details are in Steam’s file-verification instructions.

A DLC page says the base game is required
The message “This content requires the base game Poppy Playtime on Steam in order to play” means the free base product has not been added or installed on that account. Add and install Poppy Playtime first, then purchase or launch the desired chapter.
The accurate answer to “Is Poppy Playtime free?”
The precise answer is: Chapter 1 is free to play on Steam; Chapters 2–5 are paid DLC. Buying one DLC chapter does not include earlier chapters, and the main game is not the free multiplayer game PROJECT: PLAYTIME.
