Yes—you can play PSP games on an iPhone running iOS 26 without using a computer for installation or file transfer. Install the official PPSSPP – PSP emulator from the App Store, then load a legally usable PSP file in .iso, .cso, or .chd format. You can transfer an existing file from iCloud, another cloud service, or another device over Wi‑Fi. PPSSPP does not include commercial games, and creating a backup from a physical UMD may require additional hardware.
What you need
- An iPhone that can run iOS 26 and the current PPSSPP App Store build. Performance still varies by iPhone model and game.
- The official PPSSPP app.
- A legally usable PSP title: an ISO, CSO, CHD, free demo, or homebrew game.
- Enough local storage for the game, saves, and temporary downloads.
- Optional: a Bluetooth or compatible wired controller.
PPSSPP emulates PSP software. It is not a PS2, PS3, or PS Vita emulator, and it does not play UMD video discs. See the project’s scope explanation at PPSSPP’s introduction.
Install PPSSPP from the App Store
- Open the iPhone App Store.
- Search for PPSSPP – PSP emulator.
- Verify that the developer is Henrik Rydgård / PPSSPP, then install the official listing: App Store listing.
The U.S. listing is shown as “Free · In‑App Purchases”; check the current listing in your country for the latest availability and purchase details. The app download does not include PSP games.

You do not need AltStore, SideStore, a jailbreak, a developer certificate, or a random IPA for the normal method. Apple’s alternative-distribution rules vary by region, but the App Store build is the straightforward route. PPSSPP’s iOS notes are at the official iOS support page.

Get PSP games legally
Free homebrew and demos
For a genuinely computer-free trial, use PPSSPP’s Homebrew Store or a reputable distributor of freely licensed PSP homebrew and demos. Download the title, follow its instructions, and launch it from PPSSPP’s Games tab. PPSSPP documents these legal categories at its getting-started guide.
Your own commercial game files
Load games you own or are otherwise licensed to use. Laws covering personal backups from physical UMDs differ by country and state. An iPhone cannot turn a UMD into an ISO by itself; dumping a physical disc may require a PSP and other hardware. PPSSPP’s guidance on obtaining games is available at How to get games.
Do not use unauthorized ROM sites or assume that a file is legal because it downloads successfully. PPSSPP does not grant a license to copyrighted games.

Which file formats work?

ZIP and RAR files are archives, not normally playable game images. Extract the archive first so the actual ISO, CSO, or CHD is visible. Do not merely rename an arbitrary file extension. PPSSPP documents supported formats in its iOS documentation and FAQ.
Transfer a game without a computer
Option 1: PPSSPP’s Wi‑Fi upload page
This is the best route when the game file is on another phone, tablet, or compatible device. PPSSPP 1.20 and later can create a local upload page; both devices must be on the same Wi‑Fi network.
- Open PPSSPP and select the Games tab.
- Browse to the folder where you want the game stored.
- Tap the Upload icon, shown as a folder with an upward arrow.
- PPSSPP displays a local web address.
- On the other device, open that address in a browser.
- Choose the ISO, CSO, or CHD and upload it.
- Return to PPSSPP and refresh or reopen the Games view.
The documented workflow is described at PPSSPP’s file-transfer guide. It needs another device containing the file, but not a computer specifically.

Option 2: Files, iCloud Drive, or another cloud service
- In the Files app or your cloud-storage app, download the game locally if it is not already available offline.
- Use Share or Open in… and choose PPSSPP when iOS offers it.
- If PPSSPP is not listed, save the extracted file to On My iPhone.
- Open PPSSPP, choose Games, and use Browse… to locate it.
Menu names differ among iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, and browser downloads. A cloud subscription is optional; PPSSPP needs access to a local file, not merely a file visible online.

Open and launch the game
- Open PPSSPP and go to Games.
- Tap Browse… or navigate to the folder containing the extracted game image.
- Tap the game file to start it.
- If it is missing, refresh the view, confirm the download completed, and check that it is not still inside a ZIP or RAR archive.
PPSSPP stores PSP-style data in its app storage, including virtual Memory Stick folders such as PSP/GAME and PSP/SAVEDATA. Keep the game and data folders in stable locations while the app is running.
Configure touch controls
Touch controls work immediately and cost nothing. In PPSSPP’s control settings, resize or reposition the virtual buttons, hide controls you do not need, and remap buttons when a game’s layout feels uncomfortable. Touch is generally easiest for menus, RPGs, turn-based games, and testing; analog-heavy action, racing, fighting, and sports games are usually more comfortable with a physical controller.

Use a Bluetooth or MFi controller
- Pair the controller in iOS Settings before launching the game.
- Open PPSSPP’s control configuration.
- Map the analog stick to PSP analog input, not only the D-pad.
- Check Start and Select manually; layouts differ between controller models.
- After confirming the controller works, hide the on-screen controls if desired.
Apple’s iOS 26 feature documentation discusses controller integration, but individual controller compatibility and mappings can still differ: Apple’s iOS 26 feature PDF. Telescopic controllers also need the correct Lightning or USB‑C connector and enough clearance for your case.
Choose graphics settings safely
- Start with PPSSPP’s default rendering settings.
- Confirm that the game plays reliably.
- Increase internal resolution or add enhancements one setting at a time.
- If frames drop, audio crackles, or video breaks, return to the previous resolution and disable demanding effects.
Do not treat 3× upscaling as a guaranteed result for every iPhone and game. The App Store listing contains user reports, not a universal performance specification.
Does PPSSPP need JIT on iOS 26?
Generally, no. Apple’s ordinary App Store restrictions prevent the same JIT path available to some sideloaded builds, but PPSSPP says modern iPhones can usually run PSP emulation adequately without JIT. Compatibility is still title- and device-dependent. Sideloading is for advanced users who specifically need a custom build or JIT; it adds signing, trust, expiry, and security complications and is not the computer-free beginner route.

Troubleshoot common problems

PPSSPP describes modern iOS performance as adequate for nearly all PSP games, not every game under every setting. Compatibility and speed remain dependent on the title and iPhone.
