To change your Game Center name, edit your Game Center nickname in the Apple Games app or in your device’s Game Center settings. This changes the player name associated with your Game Center profile—not your Apple Account name, device name, or necessarily the username inside a particular game.
Before you change the name
Make sure you are editing the identity you actually want to change:
- Game Center nickname: The public player name attached to your Game Center profile.
- Apple Account name: Your broader Apple account or personal name. Changing it is not necessary for a Game Center nickname change.
- Device name: The name assigned to your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Game-specific username: A name controlled by an individual game developer or publisher.
- Game Center identifier or player ID: An account-related identifier, separate from the visible nickname.
You must be signed in to the Apple Account connected to the intended Game Center profile. Apple’s current Apple Games documentation covers iPhone, iPad, and Mac; exact labels can vary by iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and app version. If Apple Games asks you to sign in or finish setting up a profile, complete that process first. Change your Game Center name on iPhone
Apple Games app method
- Open Apple Games.
- Tap your avatar in the upper-right corner.
- Tap Edit Profile.
- Tap your current nickname.
- Enter a new nickname, or select one of Apple’s suggestions.
- Tap Done, then tap Done again if the profile editor asks you to confirm.

Settings method
If you prefer to use Settings, open Settings > Game Center > Customize Profile. Select the current nickname, enter the replacement, and tap Done. Apple documents this as an alternative route to the Apple Games app.
Change your Game Center name on iPad
On iPad, use the same two locations, although the layout and wording may differ by iPadOS version:

- Open Apple Games, tap your profile avatar, choose Edit Profile, and select the current nickname.
- Enter a new nickname or choose a suggested one, then confirm with Done.
If Apple Games does not show the editor, open Settings > Game Center > Customize Profile and edit the nickname there. Apple’s device overview includes iPad, while the detailed step page uses iPhone labels: Apple Games on iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Change your Game Center name on Mac
Apple Games app method
- Open Apple Games.
- Click your avatar in the upper-right corner.
- Click Edit Profile.
- Select the existing nickname and type the new one.
- Close the profile editor to save the change.

System Settings method
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Click Game Center in the sidebar. You may need to scroll.
- Click Customize Profile.
- Edit the nickname and close the editor.

If you have never created a Game Center profile
Open Apple Games and follow the setup prompts. Sign in with your Apple Account, choose an avatar, create a nickname, select activity-sharing preferences, and complete setup. Once the profile exists, return to Edit Profile or Customize Profile to change the nickname later.

What the new nickname changes—and what it does not
The nickname is the profile name used in Game Center contexts. Apple says Game Center users can see your nickname, avatar, and scores. Apple’s Mac documentation also notes that your nickname and avatar are always visible to friends and may be visible to everyone in games that use global leaderboards: Apple’s Mac profile guidance.

Many games maintain their own account, publisher profile, local player name, or player ID. If only one game continues to show the old name, change the name in that game’s account or profile settings rather than repeatedly editing Game Center.

Changing the nickname is a profile edit; it does not require creating a new Apple Account. Apple’s instructions do not make a universal guarantee about every third-party game’s saved data, so individual games’ account and progress systems remain governed by their developers.
Troubleshooting a missing or unavailable nickname option

Review privacy settings separately
Changing the nickname does not make the profile anonymous. To control activity visibility, open Settings > Game Center > Activity Sharing. Apple documents Everyone, Friends Only, and Only You as available choices. Activity Sharing controls information such as achievement progress, leaderboard updates, and recently played games; it should not be treated as a way to hide the Game Center nickname itself.
